Abstract

A subsurface support is provided in the form of a soil nail. The soil nail has asperities formed on the outer surface thereof to improve the pullout capacity of the soil nail. The asperities can take a number of forms to include indentations, deformations and threads formed on the outer surface of the soil nail. Optionally, a stinger may be attached to a distal end of the soil nail to further enhance the pullout capacity of the soil nail.

Claims (19)

1. A soil nail comprising:

a tubular section having an opening formed in a distal end thereof, said tubular section being made of fiberglass;

a metal tip connected to said tubular section, said tip having a proximal connecting portion and a distal stinger portion, said proximal connecting portion being inserted in said opening of said tubular section, said stinger portion having (i) a conical shaped distal end, (ii) a plurality of successive flanges axially aligned with said conical shaped distal end and extending proximally from said conical shaped distal end along a longitudinal axial of said soil nail, (iii) an intermediate extension interconnecting said success of flanges and a proximal end of said stinger portion, and (iv) a shoulder formed on said proximal end of said stinger portion and contacting said distal end of said tubular section.
2. The soil nail of claim 1 wherein:

said tubular section has a first diameter, and said stinger portion of said metal tip has a second diameter not extending beyond said first diameter.
3. The soil nail of claim 2 wherein:

said flanges of said stinger portion extent angularly outward from said longitudinal axis and within said second smaller diameter of said stinger portion.
4. The soil nail of claim 1 wherein:

said flanges are spaced from one another longitudinally along said stinger portion, and a plurality of neck sections defining the spaces between said flanges.
5. The soil nail of claim 1 wherein:

said flanges have peripheral edges that extend generally parallel to the longitudinal axis.
6. A method, of installing a sub-surface support comprising the steps of:
providing a sub-surface support comprising a tubular member made of fiberglass having an opening formed in a distal end thereof, and a tip having a desired shape and attaching the tip to the distal end of the tubular section;

providing a launching device including a chamber on the barrel;
loading the sub-surface support in said launching device;

supporting a barrel of the launching device so that it is spaced from the surface of the ground;

admitting pressurized gas to a chamber of the launching device; and launching the sub-surface support into the ground in response to increasing pressure in the chamber.
7. The method of claim 6 further comprising the steps of:

providing a second sub-surface support comprising a second tubular section and a second tip having a different shape from said first tip, said second tip having a modified shape in response to observed results of installing the first sub-surface support;
loading the second sub-surface support in the launching device;

supporting a barrel of the launching device so it is spaced from the surface of the ground at a second location;

admitting pressurized gas to a chamber of the launching device; and launching the second sub-surface support into the ground in response to increasing pressure in the chamber.
8. The method of claim 6 wherein:

said tip is made of metal, said tip having a proximal connecting portion and a distal stinger portion, said proximal connecting portion being inserted in an opening of said distal end of said tubular section, said distal stinger portion having (i) a conical shaped distal end, (ii) a plurality of successive flanges axially aligned with said conical shaped distal end and extending proximally from said conical shaped distal end along a longitudinal axial of said soil nail, (iii) an intermediate extension interconnecting said success of flanges and a proximal end of said stinger portion, and (iv) a shoulder formed on said proximal end of said stinger portion and contacting said distal end of said tubular section.
9. A soil nail comprising:

a tubular body having at least one linear set of indentations formed thereon, said indentations extending into an outer surface of said soil nail, but not penetrating a wall of the soil nail.
10. The soil nail of claim 9 further including:

a plurality of threaded sections formed on an outer surface of said soil nail and spaced along a length of the soil nail.
11. The soil nail of claim 9 further including:

a second set of indentations formed on an opposite side of said soil nail from said at least one set of indentations, said indentations of said first and second sets extending substantially along a length of said soil nail from a proximal end to a distal end thereof.
12. The soil nail of claim 9 wherein:

at least one deformation is formed along substantially a length of said soil nail, and said deformation extending linearly with said at least one set of indentations.
13. The soil nail of claim 9 wherein:

said indentations are formed by a sprocket having a plurality of teeth that contact an outer surface of said soil nail, and said sprocket traversing substantially along a length of said soil nail to create said indentations.
14. A soil nail, as claimed in Claim 12, wherein:

said deformation is formed by applying a force to an outer surface of said soil nail thereby crushing said soil nail along a selected length thereof.
15. The soil nail of claim 9 further including:
a stinger secured to a distal end of the soil nail.
16. A method, installing a subsurface support comprising the steps of:
providing a tubular body having a plurality of asperities formed thereon, said asperities being selected from the group consisting of (i) indentations formed thereon, said indentations extending into an outer surface of said soil nail, but not penetrating a wall of the soil nail, (ii) threaded sections, (iii) deformations of a cross-sectional shape of the tubular body, and (iv protrusions;

providing a launching device including a chamber and a barrel;
loading the subsurface support in said launching device;

supporting a barrel of the launching device so that it is spaced from the surface of the ground;

emitting pressurized gas to a chamber of the launching device; and launching the subsurface support into the ground in response to increasing pressure in the chamber.
17. A soil nail comprising:

a tubular body having at plurality of asperities formed on the outer surface thereof, said asperities including a plurality of protrusions attached to an outer surface of the tubular body.
18. A soil nail comprising:

a tubular body having at plurality of asperities formed on the outer surface thereof, said asperities including at least two asperities selected from the group consisting of (i) indentations, (ii) threaded sections, (iii) deformation of a cross-sectional shape of said tubular body, and (iv) protrusions.
19. The soil nail of claim 18 further including:
a stinger secured to the distal end of the soil nail.
