Abstract

A wireless communications network comprising a mobile unit and a base unit, a first one of said units being arranged to transmit a message to a second one of said units, said message having associated with it a coded portion representative of possible responses to the message, and said second unit being arranged to decode said coded portion and to offer to a user a plurality of options corresponding to said possible responses.

Claims (20)

1. A wireless communications network comprising a mobile unit and a base unit, a first one of said units being arranged to transmit a message to a second one of said units, said message having associated with it a coded portion representative of possible responses to the message, and said second unit being arranged to decode said coded portion and to offer to a user a plurality of options corresponding to said possible responses.
2. A wireless communications network according to claim 1, wherein said second unit includes a screen for display of said message.
3. A wireless communications network according to claim 2, wherein said screen also displays said plurality of options.
4. A wireless communications network according to claim 3, wherein said screen is touch-sensitive, and in which said second unit is arranged to display said plurality of options on said screen for selection by said user touching said screen.
5. A wireless communications network according to claim 3, wherein said second unit includes a plurality of data-entry keys, said user selecting one of said plurality of options by pressing one of said keys.
6. A wireless communications network according to claim 5, wherein said data-entry keys comprise an alpha-numeric keyboard.
7. A wireless communications network according to claim 1, wherein said first unit includes a first information store and said second unit includes a second information store, said first and second stores holding first common information for encoding and decoding said coded portion of messages between said first and second units.
8. A wireless communications network according to claim 7, wherein said information stores are arranged to contain user-definable and updatable information.
9. A wireless communications network according to claim 7, wherein said second unit is a mobile unit and said second unit is a base unit, said network further including a third, mobile, unit having a third information store; and said first and third stores holding second common coding information for encoding and decoding said coded portion of messages between said first and third units, said second common coding information differing from said first common coding information.
10. A wireless communications network according to claim 1, wherein said second unit is arranged to transmit a coded response back to said first unit on said user selecting one of said plurality of options.
11. A wireless communications network according to claim 1, wherein said coded portion further includes information representative of text, said text being displayed to said user after said second unit decodes said coded portion.
12. A wireless communications network according to claim 1, wherein said first unit is arranged to transmit a composite message having a tree-like structure.
13. A wireless communications network according to claim 12, wherein said coded portion includes information allowing said user to traverse said tree-like structure.
14. A wireless communications network according to claim 13, wherein said second unit includes a screen for display of said message, said tree-like structure being displayed by means of a series of linked menus having user-selectable options.
15. A wireless communications network according to claim 1, wherein said mobile unit comprises a portable computer terminal.
16. A wireless communications network according to claim 1, wherein said mobile unit includes a bar-code scanner.
17. A wireless communications network according to claim 1, wherein said mobile unit is arranged to communicate with said base unit via one of a plurality of spaced access points, communication between said mobile unit and said access points being by wireless telegraphy.
18. A wireless communications network according to claim 17, wherein said communications network is a cellular communications network.
19. A wireless communications network according to claim 1, wherein said base unit includes a cradle for holding said mobile unit when not in use.
20. A wireless communications network according to claim 19, wherein said cradle and said mobile unit include electrical connections for downloading information stored within said mobile unit to said base unit.
