Abstract

High torque and low rpm characterize in-stream wind and hydro turbines.
To obtain acceptable efficiencies, conventional generators require step-up gearboxes from low rpm turbines. Gearboxes are expensive, unreliable, high maintenance, and inefficient. Although generators are available that allow direct coupling to low rpm turbines, the generator's power is directly proportional to its torque handling capability and rpm. Higher torque handling capability increases generator size, weight and cost. Higher rpm allows a given size generator to produce more power; in particular, doubling the rpm doubles the generator output power and also improves efficiency. This invention is related to a turbine with two rotating components, one coupled to the rotor and the other coupled to the stator of a generator such that the rotor and stator turn in opposite directions.
This counter-rotation increases the effective rpm applied to the generator and proportionately increases the power output of the generator.

Drawing no. 2 which illustrates power generation using the movable axle.
TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION
The generator has a stator which turns in one direction and a rotor which turns in the opposite direction. The field winding is in a U shape with plus and minus poles of the magnets creating exciter action.

Drawing No. 1 details show the following:-01 Power transfer gear attached to bearing around the fixed axle.
02 Generator driving gear.
03 Exterior of rotating turbine cylinder attached to fixed axle bearing (04).
04 Fixed axle bearing.
05 Counter-rotation gear.
06 Rotor of the generator.
07 Field windings.
08 Generator stator fixed to exterior rotating cylinder.
09 Direction of rotation that drives all the other gears. This direction is reversible.
Drawing No. 2 details show the following:-10 Movable axle (power source) 11 Axle bearing 12 & 14 Generator stator fixed solid to axle 13 Field Windings Movable generator rotor attached to bearing 16 Fixed housing 17 Direction of rotation that drives the other gears. This direction is reversible 18 Driving gear fixed solid to axle (10) 19 Counter-rotation gear Movable gear fixed to bearing and rotor

Claims (3)

1. A coupling of two rotating turbines to a generator; where:
the first turbine is coupled to the generator rotor, and the second turbine is coupled to the generator stator, and the first turbine imparts rotation in the opposite direction to the second turbine thereby increasing the relative rpm between the rotor and stator.
2. A direct coupling of two counter-rotating turbines to a generator as defined in claim 1; where:
the first turbine is direct coupled to the generator rotor, and the second turbine is direct coupled to the generator stator, and the first turbine is rotating in the opposite direction to the second turbine thereby increasing the relative rpm between the rotor and stator.
3. A coupling of two turbines rotating in the same direction to a generator as defined in claim 1; where:
the first turbine is coupled to the generator rotor, and the second turbine is coupled to the generator stator, and the first turbine imparts rotation in the opposite direction to the second turbine by means of a rotation reversing apparatus, thereby increasing the relative rpm between the rotor and stator.
