Abstract

A cartridge (1) containing one or more liquid beverage ingredients (200) and being formed from substantially air- and water-impermeable materials, the cartridge comprising an inlet (121) for the introduction of an aqueous medium into the cartridge, a compartment (134) containing the one or more liquid beverage ingredients and an outlet (122) for a beverage produced by dilution of the one or more liquid beverage ingredients by the aqueous medium, characterised in that the compartment includes means for controlling dilution of at least a proportion of the one or more liquid beverage ingredients on introduction of the aqueous medium into the compartment.

Claims (79)

1. A cartridge (1) containing one or more liquid beverage ingredients (200) and being formed from substantially air- and water-impermeable materials, the cartridge comprising an inlet (121) for the introduction of an aqueous medium into the cartridge, a compartment (134) containing the one or more liquid beverage ingredients and an outlet (122) for a beverage produced by dilution of the one or more liquid beverage ingredients by the aqueous medium, characterised in that the compartment includes means for controlling dilution of at least a proportion of the one or more liquid beverage ingredients on introduction of the aqueous medium into the compartment.
2. A cartridge (1) as claimed in claim 1 wherein the means for controlling dilution delays dilution of at least a proportion of the one or more liquid beverage ingredients on introduction of the aqueous medium into the compartment.

A cartridge (1) as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein, in use, an aqueous medium flow path is established from the inlet to the outlet, the means for delaying dilution comprising a partition (100) which hinders entry of at least a proportion of the one or more liquid beverage ingredients into the aqueous medium flow path.
4. A cartridge (1) as claimed in claim 3 wherein the partition (100) comprises one or more apertures (103) for controllably releasing the at least a proportion of the one or more liquid beverage ingredients into the aqueous medium flow path.
5. A cartridge (1) as claimed in claim 4 wherein four apertures (103) are provided.
6. A cartridge (1) as claimed in any of claims 3 to 5 wherein the partition comprises a cup-shaped member having an open mouth (104) directed away from the aqueous medium flow path.
7. A cartridge (1) as claimed in claim 6 wherein the cup-shaped member is annular.
8. A cartridge (1) as claimed in claim 6 or claim 7 wherein one or more apertures (103) are provided at or near a base of the cup-shaped member.
9. A cartridge (1) as claimed in claim 8 wherein the at least a proportion of the liquid beverage ingredients in the cup-shaped member (100) drain by gravity through the one or more apertures (103) in use.
10. A cartridge (1) as claimed in claim 9 wherein the cup-shaped member is spaced from a bottom of the cartridge, such that the aqueous medium flow path passes between the cup-shaped member and the bottom of the cartridge.
11. A cartridge (1) as claimed in claim 10 wherein the at least a proportion of the liquid beverage ingredients in the cup-shaped member (100) drain by gravity through the one or more apertures (103) in use vertically downwards into the aqueous medium flow path.
12. A cartridge (1) as claimed in any of claims 6 to 11 comprising an inner member (3) and an outer member (2), wherein the inner member comprises the cup-shaped member.
13. A cartridge as claimed in any of claims 3 to 12 further comprising means for producing a jet of the beverage, wherein said means for producing the jet of the beverage comprises an aperture (128) in the aqueous medium flow path.
14. A cartridge as claimed in claim 13 as dependent on claim 11 wherein the aperture (128) is delimited by an interface between the inner member and the outer member.
15. A cartridge as claimed in claim 13 or claim 14 further comprising at least one inlet (71) for air and means for generating a pressure reduction of the jet of beverage, whereby, in use, air from the at least one air inlet is incorporated into the beverage as a plurality of small bubbles.
16. A cartridge (1) as claimed in claim 15 wherein the at least one air inlet (71) is provided in the inner member downstream of the aperture (128).
17. A cartridge (1) as claimed in claim 16 wherein the at least one air inlet (71) and means for producing a pressure reduction in the jet of beverage produces a foaming of the one or more liquid beverage ingredients of greater than 40%.
18. A cartridge (1) as claimed in claim 17 wherein the foaming is greater than 70%.
19. A cartridge (1) as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the cartridge is disc-shaped.
20. A cartridge (1) as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the outer member and/or inner member are formed from polypropylene.
21. A cartridge (1) as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the outer member and/or inner member is formed by injection moulding.
22. A cartridge (1) as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the liquid beverage ingredient is a concentrated liquid milk composition.
23. A cartridge (1) as claimed in claim 22 wherein the concentrated liquid milk contains between 25 and 40%
total solids.
24. A cartridge (1) as claimed in claim 23 wherein the concentrated liquid milk contains 30% total solids.
25. A cartridge (1) as claimed in any of claims 22 to 24 wherein the concentrated liquid milk contains between 0.1 and 12% fat.
26. A cartridge (1) as claimed in any of claims 1 to 21 wherein the one or more liquid beverage ingredients are selected from the group of cocoa solids, coffee, tea, sweeteners, cordials, flavourings, alcoholic beverages, flavoured milk, fruit juices, squashes, sauces and desserts.
27. A method of dispensing a beverage from a cartridge (1) containing one or more liquid beverage ingredients (200) during an operating cycle, comprising the steps of passing an aqueous medium through the cartridge to form a beverage by dilution of said one or more beverage ingredients, and dispensing the beverage into a receptacle, wherein the one or more liquid ingredients as dispensed has a concentration at the start of the operating cycle of between 30 and 70%
total solids and a concentration at the end of the operating cycle of between 1 and 15% total solids.
28. A method as claimed in claim 27 wherein the concentration at the start of the operating cycle is between 30 and 35% total solids.
29. A method as claimed in claim 28 wherein the concentration at the end of the operating cycle is approximately 10% total solids.
30. A method as claimed in claim 28 or claim 29 wherein the liquid ingredient is concentrated milk.
31. A method as claimed in claim 27 wherein the concentration at the start of the operating cycle is between 60 and 70% total solids.
32. A method as claimed in claim 31 wherein the concentration at the end of the operating cycle is between 12 and 15% total solids.
33. A method as claimed in claim 31 or claim 32 wherein the liquid ingredient contains cocoa solids.
34. A method as claimed in claim 27 wherein the concentration at the start of the operating cycle is between 40 and 70% total solids.
35. A method as claimed in claim 34 wherein the concentration at the end of the operating cycle is between 1 and 2% total solids.
36. A method as claimed in claim 34 or claim 35 wherein the liquid ingredient is contains coffee.
37. A method of dispensing a beverage from a cartridge (1) containing one or more liquid beverage ingredients (200) during an operating cycle, comprising the steps of passing an aqueous medium through the cartridge to form a beverage by dilution of said one or more beverage ingredients, and dispensing the beverage into a receptacle, wherein the one or more liquid beverage ingredients is foamed on dispense to a ratio of between 20 and 150%.
38. A method as claimed in claim 37 wherein the one or more liquid beverage ingredients are foamed to a ratio between 70 and 100%.
39. A method as claimed in claim 37 or claim 38 wherein the one or more liquid beverage ingredients includes one or more of concentrated milk, coffee and cocoa solids.
40. A beverage as produced by the method of any of claims 27 to 39.
41. A method of manufacturing a cartridge (1) for dispensation of a beverage comprising the steps of:
a. manufacturing a plurality of outer members (2) comprising at least a first type of outer member and a second type of outer member having differing shape or configurations;
b. manufacturing a plurality of inner members (3) comprising at least a first type of inner member and a second type of inner member having differing shape or configurations;
c. storing said plurality of outer members and said inner members;

d. selecting one of the first type of outer member or the second type of outer member from the plurality of outer members;
e. selecting one of the first type of inner member or the second type of inner member from the plurality of inner members;
f. conjoining the selected inner member to the selected outer member such the inner member is within the outer member;
g.filling the outer member with one or more beverage ingredients (200) selected from a plurality of beverage ingredients; and h. sealing the outer member with a lid (5) to form the cartridge.
42. A method as claimed in claim 41 further comprising in step b. of joining a filter member (4) to the first type and/or second type of inner member (3).
43. A method as claimed in claim 41 or claim 42 wherein the first type of outer member (2) is suitable for containing roast and ground beverage ingredients or the like.
44. A method as claimed in any of claims 41 to 43 wherein the second type of outer member (2) is suitable for containing soluble or liquid beverage ingredients or the like.
45. A method as claimed in any of claims 41 to 44 wherein the first type of inner member (3) is suitable for filtering roast and ground beverage ingredients and the like.
46. A method as claimed in any of claims 41 to 45 wherein the second type of inner member (3) is suitable for filtering roast and ground beverage ingredients and the like and for entraining a plurality of air bubbles in the dispensed beverage.
47. A method as claimed in claim 45 or claim 46 wherein the first and second type of inner member (3) comprise a frame (41) having a filter (4) disposed thereupon, and wherein a peripheral rim (51) of the frame is conjoined to the selected type of outer member by welding.
48. A method as claimed in claim 47 wherein the second type of inner member (3) comprises means (70) for producing a jet of the beverage, which means comprises an aperture in a beverage flow path between an inlet and an outlet of the cartridge.
49. A method as claimed in any of claims 41 to 48 further comprising manufacturing and storing a third type of inner member (3).
50. A method as claimed in claim 49 wherein the third type of inner member is suitable for dispensing soluble beverage ingredients and the like.
51. A method as claimed in any of claims 41 to 50 further comprising manufacturing and storing a fourth type of inner member (3).
52. A method as claimed in claim 51 wherein the fourth type of inner member (3) is suitable for dispensing a liquid beverage ingredients and the like.
53. A method as claimed in any of claims 49 to 52 wherein the third or fourth type of inner member (3) comprises a skirt (80) surrounding an outlet, the skirt comprising an upper extension (81) having an upper rim (91) which engages, on assembly of the cartridge, a co-operating formation (19) of the selected type of outer member (2) to form a snap-fit arrangement for conjoining the third or fourth type of inner member to the selected type of outer member.
54. A cartridge system for dispensing a plurality of beverages comprising:
a. a plurality of outer members (3) comprising at least a first type of outer member and a second type of outer member having differing shape or configurations;
b. a plurality of inner members (2) comprising at least a first type of inner member and a second type of inner member having differing shape or configurations;
c. a plurality of beverage ingredients (200); and d. at least one lid (5) to seal the cartridge;

wherein each cartridge comprises an outer member, an inner member, one or more beverage ingredients and a lid.
55. A cartridge system as claimed in claim 54 wherein each cartridge further comprises a filter (4).
56. A cartridge system as claimed in claim 54 or claim 55 wherein the first type of outer member (3) is suitable for containing roast and ground beverage ingredients or the like.
57. A cartridge system as claimed in any of claims 54 to 56 wherein the second type of outer member (3) is suitable for containing soluble or liquid beverage ingredients or the like.
58. A cartridge system as claimed in any of claims 54 to 57 wherein the first type of inner member (3) is suitable for filtering roast and ground beverage ingredients and the like.
59. A cartridge system as claimed in any of claims 54 to 58 wherein the second type of inner member (3) is suitable for filtering roast and ground beverage ingredients and the like and comprises means entraining a plurality of air bubbles in the dispensed beverage.
60. A cartridge system as claimed in any of claims 54 to 59 wherein the first and second type of inner member (3) comprise a frame (41) having a filter (4) disposed thereupon, and wherein a peripheral rim (51) of the frame is conjoined to the selected type of outer member by welding.
61. A cartridge system as claimed in claim 59 or claim 60 wherein the second type of inner member (3) comprises means (70) for producing a jet of the beverage, which means comprises an aperture in a beverage flow path between an inlet and an outlet of the cartridge.
62. A cartridge system as claimed in any of claims 54 to 61 further comprising a third type of inner member (3).
63. A cartridge system as claimed in claim 62 wherein the third type of inner member (3) is suitable for dispensing soluble beverage ingredients and the like.
64. A cartridge system as claimed in any of claims 54 to 63 further comprising a fourth type of inner member (3).
65. A cartridge system as claimed in claim 64 wherein the fourth type of inner member (3) is suitable for dispensing a liquid beverage ingredients and the like.
66. A cartridge system as claimed in any of claims 62 to 65 wherein the third or fourth type of inner member (3) comprises a skirt (80) surrounding an outlet, the skirt comprising an upper extension (81) having an upper rim (91) which engages, on assembly of the cartridge, a co-operating formation (19) of the selected type of outer member to form a snap-fit arrangement for conjoining the third or fourth type of inner member to the selected type of outer member.
67. A method of preparing a beverage comprising the steps of:
a) inserting a first beverage cartridge (1) containing one or more beverage ingredients (200) into a beverage preparation machine (201);
b) operating said beverage preparation machine to pass an aqueous medium through the first beverage cartridge to dispense a first portion of said beverage into a receptacle;
c) inserting a second beverage cartridge (1) containing one or more beverage ingredients (200) into the beverage preparation machine;
and d) operating the beverage preparation machine to pass an aqueous medium through the second beverage cartridge to dispense a second portion of said beverage into the receptacle;
characterised in that one of the first or second beverage cartridges contains a liquid dairy-based ingredient.
68. A method as claimed in claim 67 wherein one of the first or second beverage cartridges (1) contains an ingredient for forming a brewed portion of a beverage.
69. A method as claimed in claim 67 or claim 68 further comprising the step of removing the first beverage cartridge (1) before inserting the second beverage cartridge (1).
70. A method as claimed in any of claims 67 to 69 wherein the beverage ingredient in the first or second beverage cartridge is roast and ground coffee.
71. A method as claimed in any of claims 67 to 69 wherein the beverage ingredient in the first or second beverage cartridge is leaf-based tea.
72. A method as claimed in any of claims 67 to 69 wherein the beverage ingredient in the first or second beverage cartridge is a liquid coffee ingredient.
73. A method as claimed in any of claims 67 to 69 wherein the liquid dairy-based ingredient is a concentrated dairy-based product.
74. A method as claimed in claim 73 wherein the concentrated dairy-based product is concentrated liquid milk.
75. A method as claimed in claim 74 wherein the concentrated liquid milk contains between 25 and 40%
total solids.
76. A method as claimed in claim 75 wherein the concentrated liquid milk contains 30% total solids.
77. A method as claimed in any of claims 73 to 76 wherein the concentrated liquid milk contains between 0.1 and 12% fat.
78. A method as claimed in any of claims 73 to 77 further comprising the step of foaming the one or more liquid dairy-based ingredients during dispensation.
79. A beverage preparation system comprising a beverage preparation machine (201) having means for receiving a range of beverage cartridges (1) and means for passing an aqueous medium through said beverage cartridges, a first beverage cartridge (1) containing one or more beverage ingredients (200) for preparing a first portion of said beverage, and a second beverage cartridge (1) containing one or more beverage ingredients (200) for preparing a second portion of said beverage, characterised in that one of the first or second beverage cartridges contains a liquid dairy-based ingredient.
