Abstract
One or more cuts (40) is provided in a label liner sheet (12) near the area of a cutout within the label, such as the center hole (30) in a CD label (20), in order to facilitate reliable separation of the cutout from the label and retention of the cutout (30) on the liner sheet (12) as the label (20) is peeled from the liner. The majority of the cut runs generally parallel to the cutout boundary (32) underneath the cutout (30), and the ends (45, 49) of the cut cross the boundary (32) at two separate boundary crossing points (43, 47) on either side of the portion of the cut running parallel to the boundary (32). The cut first causes a flap (58) to be created in the liner sheet (12) and partially lifted as the label (20) is beginning to be peeled away.
Thereafter, as the peel line passes the flap area, the cutout (30) experiences the full retentive strength of the label's pressure sensitive adhesive primarily at the two boundary crossings (43, 47), and the cutout (30) is pulled from the label (20) and retained on the liner sheet (12) as the adhesive force overcomes the cohesive force.
Claims (11)
1. A label sheet comprising a liner sheet and a facestock sheet releasably adhered thereto, the facestock sheet including at least one label and an unused portion of the facestock sheet, the label and unused portion defining a label boundary therebetween, characterized in that:
the liner sheet has a cut formed therein near the boundary between the label and the unused facestock portion to facilitate reliable separation of the label from the unused portion when the label is peeled away from the liner.
the liner sheet has a cut formed therein near the boundary between the label and the unused facestock portion to facilitate reliable separation of the label from the unused portion when the label is peeled away from the liner.
2. The label sheet of claim 1 further characterized in that the cut includes a plurality of separate cuts, each oriented in a different direction to facilitate reliable separation of the label from the unused portion when the label is peeled from any one of a plurality of different directions.
3. The label sheet of claim 1 further characterized in that the cut defines a flap in the liner sheet which bends upward away from a remaining portion of the liner sheet as the label is being peeled away.
4. The label sheet of claim 1 further characterized in that the cut includes a first portion which runs underneath the unused facestock portion, and a second cut portion which crosses underneath said boundary.
5. The label sheet of claim 1 further characterized in that the cut includes a first cut portion which follows a contour of said boundary and which runs underneath the unused facestock portion.
6. The label sheet of claim 1 further characterized in that the unused portion is internal to said label, such that when the label is peeled from the liner and the unused portion of the facestock remains on the liner, a hole is formed in the label.
7. The label sheet of claim 1 further characterized in that:
the cut includes a first cut portion which follows a contour of said boundary and runs underneath the unused facestock portion, and includes second and third cut portions which cross said boundary at first and second label boundary crossings, respectively;
wherein the first and second label boundary crossings define a first section of said label boundary, said first section of said label boundary including a curvature of greater than 60 degrees.
the cut includes a first cut portion which follows a contour of said boundary and runs underneath the unused facestock portion, and includes second and third cut portions which cross said boundary at first and second label boundary crossings, respectively;
wherein the first and second label boundary crossings define a first section of said label boundary, said first section of said label boundary including a curvature of greater than 60 degrees.
8. The label sheet of claim 7 further characterized in that the label includes a tab to encourage a user to peel the label from the liner sheet along said predefined label peel direction.
9. The label sheet of claim 6 further characterized in that, as the label is being peeled from the liner sheet, the following steps occur in sequence:
a first corner of said unused portion is pulled upward away from a primary plane of said liner sheet, said first corner remaining adhered to a corresponding section of the liner sheet;
said unused portion begins separating from said label;
said unused portion completely separates from said label and is left behind on said liner sheet.
a first corner of said unused portion is pulled upward away from a primary plane of said liner sheet, said first corner remaining adhered to a corresponding section of the liner sheet;
said unused portion begins separating from said label;
said unused portion completely separates from said label and is left behind on said liner sheet.
10. The label sheet of claim 1 further characterized in that the cut has the following sections in order:
a first cut section that crosses the boundary generally perpendicular to the boundary at a first boundary crossing;
a second cut section that includes a majority of the cut and which generally follows a contour of the boundary; and a third cut section that crosses the boundary generally perpendicular to the boundary at a second boundary crossing.
a first cut section that crosses the boundary generally perpendicular to the boundary at a first boundary crossing;
a second cut section that includes a majority of the cut and which generally follows a contour of the boundary; and a third cut section that crosses the boundary generally perpendicular to the boundary at a second boundary crossing.
11. The label sheet of claim 10 further characterized in that a portion of the cut lying midway between the first and second boundary crossings lies generally perpendicular to a predefined label peel direction.
