Abstract

Jack for raising and lowering a working implement such as hydraulically driven snow blades or other utilitarian accessories. Actuation of the jack allows for proper vertical alignment of the lift assembly for engagement to a vehicle chassis. Once engaged, the jack can be actuated into an inoperative position until the lift assembly is to be removed from the chassis.

Claims (22)

1. A jack for raising and lowering a working implement relative to a substrate, comprising:
a jack having a substrate engaging end and a portion spaced therefrom for coupling said jack to said assembly;
a first actuator for moving said jack from a deployed position in which said substrate engaging end contacts said substrate to an inoperative position in which said substrate engaging end is not in contact with said substrate;
a second actuator for moving said jack from said inoperative position to said deployed position, whereby the range of motion between said inoperative position and said deployed position is infinitely adjustable.
2. The jack of claim 1, wherein said first actuator is a chain dedicated to the lifting of said assembly.
3. The jack of claim 2, further comprising a frame, and wherein said chain is fixed to said jack such that upon actuation of said chain, said jack moves to said inoperative position and contacts said frame, causing said frame to move in the same direction of the jack.
4. The jack of claim 1, wherein said second actuator is biased toward said deployed position, such that movement of said first actuator creates stored energy in said second actuator.
5. The jack of claim 4, wherein said stored energy is used to actuate said jack to said deployed position.
6. The jack of claim 9, wherein said second actuator is selected from the group comprising a gas spring, a hydraulic cylinder, a mechanical spring, and combinations thereof.
7. The jack of claim 1, wherein said second actuator comprises a rigid rod having a first end coupled to said jack and a second end coupled to a gas spring.
8. The jack of claim 7, wherein said rigid rod travels in a path between said deployed position and said inoperative position, and wherein said rigid rod further comprises a stop for the movement of said rod in said path in order to maintain said rod in said inoperative position.
9. The jack of claim 1, wherein said first actuator moves said jack to a substantially horizontal position relative to said substrate when in said inoperative position.
10. Jack for raising or lowering a snow plow lift assembly relative to a substrate, comprising:
a snow plow lift assembly adapted to be mounted to a vehicle chassis, said lift assembly comprising a frame;

a linking member dedicated to raising and lowering said lift assembly;
a jack having a first portion coupled to said frame of said snow plow lift assembly, and a second portion spaced from said first portion adapted to contact said substrate, said jack being movable upon actuation of said linking member relative to said substrate.
11. The jack of claim 10, wherein said linking member lifts said jack relative to said substrate.
12. The jack of claim 10, wherein said first portion is pivotally coupled to said frame about a pivot axis, and wherein rotational movement of said jack about said pivot axis raises or lowers said lift assembly.
13. The jack of claim 12, wherein said rotational movement is accomplished by lifting said linking member.
14. The jack of claim 12, further comprising an actuator coupled to said second portion and biasing said second portion toward said substrate.
15. A method of retracting a jack attached to a lift assembly relative to a substrate, said method comprising:
providing a lift assembly comprising a frame;
providing a linking member coupled to said jack dedicated to lifting said lift assembly;

providing a jack having a first portion coupled to said frame of said lift assembly, and a second portion spaced from said first portion and contacting said substrate, said jack being movable relative to said substrate;
actuating said linking member thereby causing movement of said jack, thereby raising said lift assembly.
16. The method of claim 15, wherein said jack is caused to move towards a horizontal position relative to said substrate so as to retract said jack.
17. The method of claim 15, wherein said jack contacts said frame so as to raise said lift assembly.
18. A method of deploying a jack attached to a lift assembly relative to a substrate, said method comprising:
providing a lift assembly comprising a frame;
providing a linking member coupled to said jack dedicated to lifting said lift assembly;
providing a manual actuator to deploy said jack;
providing a jack having a first portion coupled to said frame of said lift assembly, and a second portion spaced from said first portion and contacting said substrate when in a deployed position, said jack being movable relative to said substrate;

causing movement of said jack from an undeployed position to said deployed position by actuating said linking member and said manual actuator.
19. The method of claim 18, wherein said lift assembly must be in lowered position before said jack can be deployed.
20. The method of claim 19, wherein stored energy is created in said manual actuator as jack moves from deployed to undeployed position when said linking member is actuated.
21. The method of claim 20, wherein said stored energy in said manual actuator is used to deploy said jack.
22. The method of claim 18, wherein said actuator is selected from the group comprising a hydraulic cylinder, a gas spring and a mechanical spring, and is coupled to said lift assembly at one end and to said jack at other end.
