Description

FASTENER WITH HEAD FOR BOTH METRIC AND IMPERIAL SYSTEM
Field of the invention:
The present invention relates to a fastener. More particularly, the present invention relates to a fastener with head for both metric and/or imperial system.
This invention was first designed to be use in the garage door industry in North American and in Europe specifically but not necessarily limited to this industry.
Backq_round of the invention:
All garage door use actually are counterbalancing by different mean, some are using counterweight other use spring under traction or torsion. These counterbalancing system are required to ease strength required by the user or 1 ~ the motorize system to raise and lower the door. In the process to put the spring under tension, the installer must wind the spring and maintain this torque or tension in the spring by different system usually anchor called plug or cone.
Also these counterbalance system use drum to attach the doer bottom to the overhead shaft with cable, All these element are screwed against a shaft with screw which are usually square head set screw 3/8-1 ~ in North America and Square head set screw M10 in Europe. The problem is that European metric standard does not match with North American imperial standard socket tool. This problem force Drum and plugs suppliers to maintain two kinds of screw or garage door installers to have not standard tool in their installation kit.
Hence, in light of the aforementioned, there is a need for an improved fastener which, by virtue of its design and components, would be able to overcome some of the aforementioned problems.
2 Summary of the invention:
The object of the present invention is to provide a fastener, which satisfies some of the above-mentioned needs and which is thus an improvement over related fasteners known in the prior art.
!n accordance with the present invention, the above object is achieved, as will be easily understood, with a fastener such as the one briefly described herein and such as the one exemplified in the accompanying drawings.
According to another aspect of the invention, there is also provided an object provided with the above-mentioned fastener.
According to yet another aspect of the invention, there is also provided the cable-operated door provided with the above-mentioned fastener.
According to yet another aspect of the invention, there is also provided the method for fastening the above-mentioned fastener.
The objects, advantages and other features of the present invention will become more apparent upon reading of the following non-restrictive description of preferred embodiments thereof, given for the purpose of exemplification only with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Brief description of the drawincts:
Figures 1 a and 1 b show different views and aspects of fasteners according to the prior art.
Figures 2-7 show different views and aspects of the fastener according to the present invention.
3 Detailed description of preferred embodiments of the invention:
In the following description, the same numerical references refer to similar elements. The embodiments shown in the Figures 2-7 are preferred.
Moreover, although the present invention was primarily designed for fastening purposes in regards to a cable-operated door, such as a garage door for example, it may be used with other types of doors and objects and in other fields, as apparent to a person skilled in the art. For this reason, expressions such as "cable", "garage", "door", etc. used herein should not be taken as to limit the scope of the present invention and includes all other kinds of doors or items with which the present invention could be used and may be useful.
Moreover, in the context of the present invention, the expressions °'fastener", "screw", "bolt", and any other equivalent expression known in the art will be used interchangeably. Furthermore, the same applies for any other mutually equivalent expressions, such as "cable-operated door" and "garage door", as well as "support" and "bracket" for example, as also apparent to a person skilled in the art.
In addition, although the preferred embodiment of the present invention as illustrated in the accompanying drawings comprises various components and although the preferred embodiment of the fastener 1 as shown consists of certain geometrical configurations as explained and illustrated herein, not ail of these components and geometries are essential to the invention and thus should not be taken in their restrictive sense, i.e. should not be taken as to limit the scope of the present invention. It is to be understood, as also apparent to a person skilled in the art, that other suitable components and cooperations thereinbetween, as well as other suitable geometrical configurations may be used for the fastener 1 and corresponding parts (i.e. heads) according to the present invention, as briefly explained herein, without departing from the scope of the invention.
4 Broadly described, the present invention relates to a fastener, such as a screw, a bolt, or the tike, which may be screwed with imperial standard socket tool as well as with metric socket tool.
Figures 1 a and 1 b present a standard square head set screw 3/8-16 head and a standard metric set screw M10 head respectively. Figure 2 presents modification bring to square head set screw 3/8-16 head to reach the goal describe above. All square corner of the square head set screw 318-15-16 have been modified to have a small radius instead of a corner Figure 3 presents an ordinary 7/15 hexagonal tool box when use with ordinary square head set screw 3I8-16. Figure 4 presents the same tool when use with the modified head of the square head set screw. Figure 5 presenfis the interference between ordinary metric socket box M11 with head of square head 3J8-16. Figure 6 presents the same ordinary metric socket box with the modified square head set screw 3J8-16. it is apparent that the modification bring on square head set screw's head allow the screw insertion in the metric tool.
Some other ways to reach the same result are possible, by example one's may do angle on the head's corner instead of radius as proposed, or give any other shape which will have similar result such a corner or something like that, as shown in Figure 7.
Of course, numerous modifications could be made to the above-described embodiments without departing from the scope of the invention as apparent to a person skilled in the art.
