Abstract

Disposable absorbent articles, such as sanitary napkins, panty liners, diapers and incontinence pads, in which two lateral side absorbent leaf/leg elements extend perpendicular to the principal longitudinal absorbent main crotch element of the said absorbent article when worn. The present invention provides for a sustained convex surface contact of the absorbent article with wearers' body. By adhering the two lateral side absorbent leaf/leg elements directly onto the wearers' thigh undergarment the compressive forces of the wearers' thighs effect a postive change in the pad, pushing the principal longitudinal centerline upward to the vaginal area.
The compressive forces of the wearers' thighs now increase resistance against negative deformation of the said present absorbent article thus eliminating sagging, gaping, sliding, slipping and bunching or scrunching of the said article.
Therefore this present invention provides better protection from soiling of the wearers' garments and body while providing comfort to the wearer.

Description

FIELD OF INVENTION
A sanitary napkin, incontinence pad, diaper for wearing as an undergarment or adhering to a long-legged undergarment, such as form fitting boxers. An absorbent article consisting of a crotch area with two principal axis or pairs of elongated leaves or legs: having a longitudinal centerline element, as well as having a transverse centerline element, extending in a lateral direction. All comprise an absorbent core having a pervious body-facing side and an impervious garment-facing side. It is the object of the invention to provide absorbent articles such that when subjected to lateral compression by the upper portions of the wearers' thighs, the pad reacts in a positive manner i.e. resisting bunching such as in the of case of a sanitary napkin, along either its lateral or longitudinal axes, caused by movement of the legs of the wearer. The present invention is designed to cover and protect both the horizontial and perpendicular anatomical contour of the wearer's body i.e.
crotch area, so that when the pad is compressed and extended it actually follows the bodies' convex (" ") shape . The longitudinal crotch pad is supported (rather than distorted) from the outside lateral side leaves/legs. The placement of the second lateral axis of the leg crotch element generates an upward force, i.e. against the vaginal area, resulting in the central longitudinal pad element pushing upward as a form of tensile stress. Thus the present article provides for superior body contact.
Thus an absorbent article which has a pair of perpendicular extended leaves/legs from a center body-conforming element enhances fit, comfort, and containment of z exuded matter during usage reducing if not eliminating any soiling of the wearers' undergarments.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Improving the performance of absorbent articles continues to be a challenging undertaking. Although significant improvements have been made in their materials, eliminating leakage, particularly along the inside of the thighs without compromising fit and comfort, has not met the desired needs of the consumer.
Disposable absorbent articles are meant to absorb and retain aD exuded matter in the area that they are applied such that the wearers' garment / undergarments are protected from soiling. It has been found that the most effective way to accomplish this, to that end, is to design an absorbent article that conforms comfortably at all times to the areas in need. Furthermore, it is desirable to have the said absorbent article maintain good body contact, with minimal distortion, to the perineal area of the wearer when the said article is worn. Thus reducing exudate leakage onto clothing.
There have been a number of inventions in absorbent articles that have tried to address/solve the aforementioned characteristics. As described in U.S. Pat.
No.
5,676,652; U.S. Pat. NO 5,649,917; U.S. Pat. No. 5,267,992; U.S. Pat. No. 5, 705,928;
U.S.Pat. No. 5,713,883; Can. Pat No 20822669; Can. Pat No 1,300,149 Can. Pat.
No.
1,286,855 which are hereby incorporated by reference.
Their efforts although better than any of their predecessors fall short for various reasons ( mainly distortion during use) and particularly during heavy elimination and during use while sleeping. Hence, there still remains a need for improving the performance of absorbent articles. There still remains a need to improve upon the pads " good body contact " and there always is a need to provide the wearer with an alternative choice of napkin to meet the changing trends in undergarment and athletic wear.
The major problem with all and the above-mentioned conventional absorbent articles ( in particular sanitary napkins ), is not the absorbent capacity of these articles, but rather their structural design. The structual design of all previous absorbent articles are meant to be worn in the crotch portion of a legless panty, generally containing an elastic material. During use, the pad works together with the narrow crotch portion of the panty and the elastic perimeter of the crotch seam of the panties. Due to the flexibility of the elastic and the construction of the absorbent pad, which is generally stronger than the elastic of the panty, and given the small crotch area in the panty; the pad becomes distorted within an unreasonably short period of time. Hence insufficient coverage resulting from distortion of the absorbent article when compressed during use by the thigh movements of the wearer causes leakage of blood/urine onto wearer's garments.
Attempts have been made to stiffen the center absorbent element as disclosed in U.S.
Pat 5,713,883 , issued Feb. 3, 1998 which is incorporated herein by reference.

Conversely, attempts have been made to soften the center absorbent element in dopes the elastic of the panty would pull the absorbent pad back to it original shape.
Although these as well as undergarment covering components such as wings, flaps, tabs, all side wrapping elements help contain the flow of blood/ urine, they still all fall short of their intended performance. Thus there still remains a need for improving the performance of sanitary napkins especially to ensure that the undergarment remains protected from exuded matter.
It is the object of the present invention to better meet the desired effectiveness of an absorbent article for the following reasons.
Sanitary napkins when provided with flaps, wings of various types as disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 5,704,928, issued Jan. 6 1998, Proctor and Gamble; U.S. Pat. No.
5,676,652, entitled, "Absorbent Articles having Undergarment Covering Components with Mechanical Fasteners having Improved Tactile Properties", issued Oct. 14, 1997; U.S. Pat. No. 5,267,992, entitled"Shaped Sanitary Napkin With Flaps", issued Dec.7, 1993; PCT Publication No. WO 92/18080, entitled "Sanitary Napkin Having Flaps", issued, Oct. 29, 1992; U.S. Pat. No.
4,608,478, entitled ,"Sanitary Napkin With Attachment Means ", issued on Aug. 26 1986;
herein incorporated by reference, have minor lateral extentions ( side wrapping elements) from a main body absorbent article. These are intended to be folded around and under the edges of the wearers' panties, exclusive to the crotch region and independent of the legs of the wearer, where they are intended to prevent some exudates from soiling the edges of the wearer's panties. However, inherent bunching generally due to the compression from such daily movements as folding one's legs, sitting with legs together, steeping on one's side etc. deform the designed use of the absorbent article. It has been found that when wearers' spread apart their legs i.e. standing or laying with legs open wider than shoulder width during daily and nightly motions often pads remain in a bunched position causing soiling of under and/or outer garments. It is believed that the present invention successfully addresses these problems, in particular, when the present invention is worn during sleep hours or/and during heavy flow or/and excerise.
The present invention tackles these specific problems by creating a napkin that moves in concert with wearers' leg movements. The present invention provides for double arc pads: one arc pad between the legs of the wearer's body, another arc pad following the natural curve of the wearer's perinea) area. Both conform to the bodies' natural curvatures, thus, the performance of the napkin when scrunched between the wearers' legs results in a positive action due to the tensile stress created but the lateral leaves which push the pad closer to wearers' vaginal area.
When wearers' move their legs apart so follows the pad. Thus the pad is never left scrunched between the legs of the wearer.
Due to the fact that the adhesive fasteners on the wing/ flap extensions are of inadequate stiffness hence they tend to fold and stick to the pad itself when the wearer is attempting to adhere pad to undergarment; making it useless to the wearer in terms of holding the pad in place and protecting the wearers' garments.

Hence there is also a need for an absorbent article, such as a sanitary napkin , with improved adhesive wing element.
These are the main objects of the present invention:
It is the object of this invention to provide a disposable absorbent article, such as and most commgly sanitary napkins, which provides for a more comfortable structural design, a more desirable body-conforming fit, inhibits negative napkin distortion, prevents gaping, and uses in a postive way the natural compressive forces of the upper thighs to improve contact of the absorbent articles to wearers' body.
It is also an object of the invention to provide for an absorbent article to effectively and comfortably provide for adequate absorbtion of the lateral spread of body fluids and thus delivering increased protection to wearers' under and outer garments;
by way of absorbing side soiling.
It is also the object of this invention to provide for an absorbent article that maintains in its body comforming shape throughout normal daily movements as well as phyical excerise and the tossing and turning of a night's sleep.
It is also the object of this invention to provide for an absorbent article that conforms to the needs of changing trends in undergarments since women prefer wearing brief style undergarments. Conventional pads worn as such in aforementioned garments still do not have the structure necessary to be effective.
It is also the object of this invention to provide for an absorbent article that is completely disposible since women now end up tossing their stained undergarments.
This present invention includes designs for a self contained napkin enclosed/
intergated into a light expanding liner brief.
It is also the object of this invention to provide for a more effective design with regards to diapers. Diapers are also subjected to upper thigh compression and in most cases movement from all directions as wearers' pull and push their way around causing the diaper to shift and bunch allowing for leakages. As well, in the case of tiny newborns and smaller than average toddlers' poor fit contributes to unnessary soiling of wearers' and care givers clothing. This invention with the extra soft elasticized leg extentions provides for more protection then any present day diaper.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The sanitary napkin, panty liner, incontinence pad, of the present invention comprises a liquid pervious topsheet, a liquid impervious backsheet, and an absorbent core positioned between the topsheet and the backsheet; a perimeter comprising of two longitudinal side leaves, and two lateral side leaves/tegs of equal to lesser absorbent quality: allowing for comfortable absorption of natural liquid migration in all directions. The two lateral side leaves/legs attached to the crotch pad are positioned parallel to wearers' upper thighs and are either fastened to wearers' form fitting briefs ( ie. borer shorts, girdle, or excerise shorts ect. ) by way of a pressure sensitive adhesive. In the case of a sanitary napkin or diaper a full brief panty with partial to fully absorbent midriflf embodiment with absorbent elasticized leg extensions pull on as shorts. The elasticized legs and /or waist are held in place with pressure sensitive adhesive and/or small velcro strips, or other fastening devices known in the art suitable for such purposes. All designs dynamically improve the effectiveness of the absorbent articles body-comforming capabilities achieving a convex form significantly reducing the possibility of leakage onto clothing.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING

Fig. 2. is a front view of the sanitary napkin of the present invention.
Fig. 3. is a side view of one embodiment of a sanitary napkin of the present invention Fig. 4. is a cross sectional view of one embodiment of a sanitary of the present invention on a wearer running.
Fig. 1-3 show napkin 80 as one example of a preferred embodiment of the sanitary napkin. Assembled in sandwich construction in which the topsheet # 19 and the backsheet # 21 have length and width somewhat larger than the middle absorbent core, which can be of any thickness, including relatively thick, intermediate thickness, relatively thin, or even very thin or ultra thin. Twenty centimeters is thought to be a desirable length and width of each centerline element of a heavy flow pad. The topsheet, the backsheet and the absorbent core may be comprised any suitable components known in the art for such purposes. The topsheet # 19 is joined to the backsheet # 21, and can be done joined in any suitable manner known in the art for this purpose.
The sanitary napkin in fig.l-3 also comprise a pair of side leaves that extend laterally outward beyond the longitudinal side edges # 22 of the main body portion #20, a distance of less than or equal to or greater than, or to some one- half the length of the main body portion. Preferably, the side leaves # 22 will extend outward a distance equal to one-half the length of the main body portion # 20.
The side leave elements may or may not have the same sandwich construction of the main body.
The side leaf element # 22 shown in figs. 1-3 may be directly secured to the other main body element # 20 by affizing the elements at junction # 24.
Alternatively the F~
side leaf element # 22 is integral with the main body element # 20 , thus, the side leaf element # 22 can have integral extensions of the topsheet # 19 and backsheet #
21 formed together as main body # 80. This is thought to be the preferable embodiment conception since the side leaf elements #22 can be comprised of a single component. In still other embodiments of the present invention, each side leaf can be instead comprised of more than one component.
The embodiment shown in figs. 1-3 may have zones of extensibility which may be formed known in the art for such purpose, methods as ring rolling, corrugations may be applied so that the fold lines in the corrugations are oriented generally in the transverse or lateral direction to provide zones of extensiblity or any suitable methods known in art for this purpose.
The garment surface of sanitary napkin # 20 shown in figs 1-2-3-4 may or may not include, such fasteners as # 30 adhesive stripes for attaching the main body element # 20 napkin to the wearer's brief style undergarment or other fastening devices such as garder belt to the upper thigh of the wearer. The present invention preferably does include fasteners for attaching the embodiment of # 22 to the wearers' undergarment. Any types of fastener known in the art;
such as adhesive fasteners, pressure-sensitive adhesives, mechanical fasteners, and others, can be used for this purpose.
