Abstract

IN A ONE-PIECE VERTICAL POLE WITH THE TOP AND BOTTOM PLATES IT IS
KNOWN THAT IT IS AN AIDE FOR HANDICAPPED PERSONS. THE ONE-PIECE POLE IS
PLACED BETWEEN THE CEILING AND THE FLOOR AND ELEVATED BY A SCREW
ADJUSTMENT AT OR NEAR THE TOP.
IN THIS INVENTION THE VERTICAL POLE IS MADE WITH TWO TUBULAR PIECES
AND TOP AND BOTTOM PLATES. THE ADJUSTMENT IS MADE BY MANUALLY TURNING
OF THE LOWER TUBULAR PIECE ON A THREADED ROD ARRANGEMENT AT THE BOTTOM.
THE UNIT IS COLLAPSIBLE AND MAY BE MADE OF ALUMINUM OR STEEL AND IS
TRANSPORTABLE. THE POLE MAY HAVE A SLIDING SLOTTED COVER OVER THE VISIBLE
THREADED ROD AND LOCK NUT.

Description

This invention relates to a one-person manually operable two-piece cylindrical vertical pole that is transportable and used for helping invalids in their difficulties.
It is common for other vertical poles to assist invalids. However, they do not, because of their length, permit easy transportation in a vehicle. They usually require more than one person to erect. A
disabled or an assistant person is obliged to climb to reach the adjusting screw at the top near the ceiling.
This is very dangerous and a great disadvantage to overcome.
I have determined that the difficulties and great inconveniences of erecting the vertical poles may be overcome by providing a two cylinder vertical pole with the adjustment at the bottom. This arrangement relieves the real danger of climbing by elderly or disabled persons.
t O In drawings, which illustrate embodiments, Figure 1 is a plan view of the two-piece vertical pole.
Figure 2 is an elevation partly in section of one embodiment. Figure 3 is a plan and tap view of this embodiment. Figure 4 is a plan and top view of the embodiment of the cosset connection and an internal split plastic washer insert. Figure 5 is a hidden view of another embodiment with the spring loaded lock button. Figure 6 is a section of the line VI-VI of Figure 2. Figure 7 is a plan view of a metal tightening pm.
The collapsible vertical pole comprises a ceiling plate with a welded solid stubs that inserts loosely in the upper tubular cylinder2. The lower cylinder 3 embraces the upper tubular cylinder in a close lit. A spring-loaded button4 in the upper tubular cylinder is compressed and allowed to enter one of the adjusting holes6 and thereby locking the two tubular cylinders. The two cylinders are then joined by a ,2o collet~ and a split plastic washer22. The locked cylinders are then rotated and the unit raised by manually turning the lower cylinder3 anti-clockwise on a threaded bolts welded to a metal plates and guided by two Page I

fixed internal nutsl°. A final adjustment may be made by inserting and turning a steel pinlt in an opening on the lower cylinder 111 to increase stability. The opening 111 may also be used to lock the unit when collapsed for transportation. A lock nutl2 is tightened after erection. A slotted cylinder may be used to cover the appearance of the lower threaded bolt and lock nut. While the invention has been described in detail, it is not to be limited to the exact embodiments shown, because they are to serve merely as illustrative embodiments of the invention and not by way of limitation.

CLAIM I
The embodiment of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows.
A manually operable tool for raising a two-piece vertical pole from floor to a normal height ceiling, comprising a slip resistant rubberized or foam covered metal ceiling plate, with a solid metal welded stub attached, two tubular cylinders, a spring-loaded locking button, a collet, a threaded rod, guiding internal fixed nuts, a lock nut and a bottom slip resistant covered metal plate.
A tool as defined in Claim I in which a rubberized or foam covered ceiling plate unit is inserted freely in an upper tubular cylinder.
A tool as defined in Claim I in which the upper tubular cylinder is a sliding close fit to the lower tubular cylinder and a threaded collet with a split grip plastic washer to hold the two tubular cylinders taunt.
A tool as defined in Claim I in which a spring-loaded button is utilized in the adjusting entries in the lower tubular cylinder.
A tool as defined in Claim I in which the lower tubular cylinder has fixed internal guiding nuts for the threaded rod.
A tool as defined in Claim I in which the threaded rod is welded to a bottom metal plate that has a rubberized ar foam contact surface with the floor.
A tool as defined in Claim I in which the unit is secured by a lock nut.
