Abstract

A unisex magnetic coaxial connector device comprises a coaxial cable and a coaxial adapter. The coaxial adapter comprises a ring-shaped magnetic element magnetised along the axis, and means for holding and biasing the ring-shaped magnetic element. The ring-shaped magnetic element comprises an even number of magnetic segments having alternating magnetic polarities at the end. The ring-shaped magnetic element engages with an identical ring-shaped magnetic element of another coaxial adapter and provides alignment in a unisex arrangement. Preferably, each magnetic segment of the ring-shaped magnetic element of the magnetic coaxial adapter is made of a rare-earth permanent magnet. Each magnetic segment of the ring-shaped magnetic element may have a ring shape divided by a multiple of 2 along the axis, or have a rod shape and is embedded in a non-magnetic material.
This invention relates to coaxial connector devices, and the principal use of the invention is for electro-optical connection.

Description

Description Title = Unisex Magnetic Coaxial Connector Device Technical Field = This invention relates to coaxial connector devices, more particularly to a magnetic coaxial connector device.
Background Art = There are many instances where it would be desirable to be able to magnetically connect electrical conductors and/or optical waveguides in a coaxial cable, without requiring both male and female connectors.

= A number of patents disclose magnetic connectors for electrical conductors and/or optical waveguides in different configurations.

= Canadian Patent 1 113 760 discloses "MAGNETIC CONNECTOR FOR
OPTICAL CABLES". This prior art magnetically connects optical waveguides, but does not have a coaxial configuration.

= U.S. Patent 4 690 495 discloses "Optical fiber magnetic connector". This prior art magnetically connects optical waveguides, but does not have a socket assembly.

= U.S. Patent 4 844 582 discloses "Hybrid electro-optical connectors", and U.S. Patent 5 015 061 discloses "Optical connector". These prior arts magnetically connect both electrical conductors and optical waveguides, but do not have a coaxial configuration.

= U.S. Patent 5 401 175 discloses "Magnetic coaxial connector".
This prior art magnetically connects electrical conductors, but does not have a socket assembly.

= U.S. Patent 6 004 045 discloses "Optical connector". This prior art magnetically connects optical waveguides, but does not have a socket assembly.

= These prior art arrangements do not magnetically connect electrical conductors and/or optical waveguides in a sexless configuration, without requiring both male and female connectors.

Description of the Invention = It is a primary object of the invention to provide a magnetic coaxial connector device for connecting electrical conductors and/or optical waveguides in a coaxial configuration.

= It is another object of the invention to provide a magnetic coaxial connector device which connects one connector to another connector, or one connector to an electro-optical device by a magnetic force.

= It is another object of the invention to provide a magnetic coaxial connector device in a sexless configuration, without requiring both male and female connectors, or sex-change converters.

= A unisex magnetic coaxial connector device comprises a coaxial cable and a coaxial adapter.

Brief Description of the Figures in the Drawings = In drawings which illustrate embodiments of the invention:
o Figure 1 marked "Prior Art" is a sectional view of a conventional magnetic coaxial connector device;

o Figure 2 is a sectional view of a magnetic coaxial connector device according to the invention;

o Figure 3 is an expanded sectional view of one embodiment of a magnetic coaxial connector device according to the invention;

o Figure 4 is an expanded sectional view of another embodiment of a magnetic coaxial connector device according to the invention; and o Figure 5 is an expanded sectional view of another embodiment of a magnetic coaxial connector device according to the invention.
2 Modes for Carrying Out the Invention = One conventional magnetic coaxial connector device shown in Figure 1 marked "Prior Art" comprises a coaxial cable 1-0 and a magnetic coaxial adapter 2-0, securely attached to the coaxial cable 1-0.

= The conventional magnetic coaxial adapter 2-0 comprises a ring-shaped magnetic element 2-1 magnetised along the axis, and means 2-2 for holding and biasing the ring-shaped magnetic element 2-1.

= The conventional magnetic coaxial connector device requires both male and female connectors in order to magnetically connect electrical conductors and/or optical waveguides. For example, a male connector may have a North pole, while the female connector may have a South pole, as shown in Figure 1.

= In one embodiment of the invention shown in Figure 2, a magnetic coaxial connector device comprises a coaxial cable 4-0 and a magnetic coaxial adapter 5-0, securely attached to the coaxial cable 4-0.

= The coaxial cable 4-0 has a planar end.

= The coaxial adapter 5-0 comprises a ring-shaped magnetic element 5-1 magnetised along the axis, and means 5-2 for holding and biasing the ring-shaped magnetic element 5-1.

= The ring-shaped magnetic element 5-1 has a rotationally symmetrical axis and a magnetic end. The ring-shaped magnetic element 5-1 comprises an even number of magnetic segments having alternating polarities at the magnetic end, e.g., 1 North pole and 1 South pole as shown in Figure 3, 2 North poles and 2 South poles as shown in Figure 4, 4 North poles and 4 South poles as shown in Figure 5, etc.

= The ring-shaped magnetic element 5-1 engages with an identical ring-shaped magnetic element of another coaxial adapter and provides self-alignment in a unisex arrangement.

= The coaxial cable 4-0 of the magnetic coaxial connector device may comprise a centre optical waveguide 4-1 for carrying optical signals, as shown in Figure 3.

= The coaxial cable 4-0 of the magnetic coaxial connector device may comprise a plurality of electrical conductors 4-2 and 4-3 for carrying electrical power (DC electrical power or AC electrical power). Each electrical conductor is separated by an electrical insulator, as shown in Figure 4.

= The coaxial cable 4-0 of the magnetic coaxial connector device may comprise a centre optical waveguide 4-1 for
3 carrying optical signals, and a plurality of outer electrical conductors 4-2 and 4-3 around the centre optical waveguide 4-1 for carrying electrical power (DC electrical power or AC
electrical power). Each electrical conductor is separated by an electrical insulator from another electrical conductor, as shown in Figure S.

= Preferably, each magnetic segment of the ring-shaped magnetic element 5-1 of the magnetic coaxial adapter 5-0 is made of a rare-earth permanent magnet.

= Each magnetic segment of the ring-shaped magnetic element 5-1 of the magnetic coaxial adapter 5-0 may have a ring shape divided by a multiple of 2 along the axis in order to make a secure connection. For example, Figure 3 shows 2 magnetic segments having a semi-ring shape, while Figure 4 shows 4 magnetic segments having a quarter-ring shape.

= Alternatively, each magnetic segment of the ring-shaped magnetic element 5-1 of the magnetic coaxial adapter 5-0 may have a rod shape, and be embedded in a non-magnetic material, as shown in Figure S.

= The centre optical waveguide 4-1 of the magnetic coaxial connector device may be a glass fibre, a plastic fibre, a liquid light guide, or a quartz light guide.
