Abstract
Description
PROCESS FOR CARRYING OUT FINANCIAL TRANSACTIONS, ELECTRONIC PURSE SYSTEM THEREFOR
The present invention relates to the field of transactions.
between a buyer, at least a seller and at least one institute s financial. The invention comprises a method for carrying out transactions systems, a system for this purpose and an electronic purse being part of said system.
Many systems exist for performing financial transactions, such as payment for a purchase, without requiring lo exchange of cash. Mention may be made for this purpose of debit or debit cards.
credit as well as "E-CASH" payment cards.
For debit or credit cards, the spending amount allowed is generally limited. This limitation can be of the type limitation of amount per transaction or limitation of the amount of transactions on a The fixed period, for example a day or a month, the type of limitation being fixed by the card issuing institute and / or by the type of card.
This limitation stems from the fact that the issuing institute that issued the card and controlling the use of it is generally not advised in time real expenses incurred by the buyer. This is a disadvantage of this type of 2o card, especially for users with a sufficient account supplied from the issuing institute or the bank and willing to make payments beyond the fixed limit, which thus cannot access all of their resources. A possibility to remedy this defect is for the user to subscribe to several cards, in order to use 2s successively, this manner of proceeding having the disadvantage for the user of having to carry a plurality of cards with him as well as requiring a control additional in order to know the card or cards still usable. Else share, given that the payment for the purchase or service to the seller by the institute card issuance is not done in real time but is deferred, some 3o sellers are not interested in being part of this card system.
2 A recently introduced "E-CASH" payment card requires be introduced into a "BANCOMAT" type bank payment device, to be charged with a selected amount of "electronic money".
Subsequently, upon purchase, simply debit the card for the amount of purchase, s the receiving device of the seller, in which the card was inserted being credited with the same amount. The downside of this system is that it is necessary to go to a "BANCOMAT" device before being able to make payments and that the amount that can be charged to the card is limited.
lo An additional disadvantage of the cards mentioned comes from also because a card of any type can easily be stolen.
When used by an unauthorized person, unless he has summer canceled in the meantime, a single check is generally carried out, signature or PIN code, and that this control can fairly easily be overcome by fraud.
The process for carrying out financial transactions relating to a purchase by a buyer from a seller according to the invention proposes to remedy the described disadvantages of existing methods, in particular by providing a communication system between the bank or the institute of issue, the buyer and the seller, which establishes the various operations of 2o identity check, authorization of expenditure, debit and credit in time real or almost real, this being possible thanks to an electronic purse in possession of the buyer.
Such a method is described in claim 1, a system for the application of this method being described in claim 14, while a 2s electronic purse forming part of said system is described in claim 16. Specific and alternative embodiments of the process, system and electronic wallet, are described in fes claims dependent on those mentioned above.
The single figure schematically shows the system proposed as well so that its different components, especially the wallet electronic.
Pour ce type de liaisons, le porte-monnaie électronique 2 est muni d'une antenne 24. 3 We first have an issuing institute or bank 1 in which a of users of the system, the future buyer, has an account. The institute 1 a given this user an electronic wallet 2. The seller of the product or service is provided with a collection device 3. The seller is a customer s of a bank 4. Institute 1 is provided with means 10 for transmitting and receiving signals from a link 5 to and from the electronic purse 2 as well as signals from a link 8 to and from bank 4. The device 3 is provided with means for receiving and possibly to transmit signals of a link 6 coming from the carrier 1o electronic money 2 and send and receive signals from a link 7 to and from the bank 4.
The electronic purse 2 includes in particular a keyboard 20, only numeric or alphanumeric, a screen 21 and a circuit internal electronics 22, coupled to means for transmitting and receiving is signals from link 5 towards Institute 1. Signals from link 5 between the electronic purse 2 and the institute 1 are preferably radio signals. Preferably the link 5 between the wallet electronics 2 and institute 1 is done through a device telephone portable 23, connected by a cable to a suitable port on the wallet 2o electronic, the transmission being done via the network telephone 50. Since the electronic purse 2 is already provided with a keyboard and screen it is possible, according to another embodiment, integrate the mobile phone 23 directly into the wallet 2 or on the contrary to integrate an electronic wallet 2 into 2s a mobile phone.
According to another embodiment, the connection 5 between the holder electronic money 2 and institute 1 can be a radio link direct 51 or more generally from a link 52 via a relay 53 to earth then the telephone network 54 or a link 55 between the wallet 3o electronics 2 and a satellite 56 which transmits the signal via a relay 53 or directly to institute 1. For this type of connection, the wallet electronics 2 is provided with an antenna 24.

s When he wants to pay for a purchase or a service, the user, respectively the buyer, first establishes connection 5 of the type provided on his electronic wallet or the best possible bond, holding account of its geographic position, in case the wallet electronics is equipped to be able to choose either lo links 5 mentioned above. Preferably, the establishment of a bond begins with the emission of a code, memorized in circuit 22, and suitable for each electronic wallet 2. In this way, the institute 1 identifies immediately exactly the electronic wallet 2 which calls, continued from which the user enters an additional code, a digital PIN code, is using keyboard 20 to identify yourself. A computer program installed in the electronic purse 2 then a menu is displayed on the screen 21, by which the user then requests, using the keyboard 20, to debit the account he has with institute 1 of an amount corresponding to the amount of the purchase he wants to pay or a higher amount and credit his holder 2o electronic money 2 of this amount in electronic money. All of these operations takes place via link 5.
The transaction between the buyer and the seller is carried out through a link 6 which is established during the payment between the electronic purse and the collection device 3. This transaction consists in transferring the 2s amount or part of the amount in electronic money which has just been charge in the electronic purse 2, towards the collection device 3. The link 6 can be designed according to one of the following embodiments. According to the first embodiment shown schematically in 60, the wallet electronic 2 is supplemented by a smart card 61 provided in particular with 3o writable memory means. When the card 61 is inserted in a adequate slot for electronic purse 2, electronic circuit 22 loads the memory of said card in electronic money with the amount of the transaction to be performed, in a manner similar to that currently used to load "E-CASH" cards. Identification codes and / or authorization can be loaded simultaneously.
Then, this card 61 is removed from the electronic purse 2 and is transmitted to the collection device 3 where it is introduced into a s adequate slot.
According to a first variant of the method, the card 61 is compatible with existing card systems, for example in ATMs petrol or "E-CASH" payment systems, and it is read and debited from similar way. Likewise, card 61 can be accepted by a io type "BANCOMAT" in order to deliver cash.
According to a second variant of the method, the identification codes are first read by a suitable means 30 of the collection device 3, then this last device or the seller seeks to establish a connection between said collection device 3 and the issuing institute or bank 1 in which is the buyer has an account. This connection can be established from different manners. Since the seller is affiliated to the system offered by institute 1, the connection can be established directly between the collection device 3 and the institute 1. As a variant, this connection can be established in two portions, a first portion 7 between the collection device 3 and the bank 4 from which the 2o seller is customer, then by a second link 8 between this bank 4 and the institute 1. Since the collection device 3, the bank 4 and the institute 1 are placed in specific locations, links 7 and 8 are preferably via the telephone network shown schematically in 70 and 80, or by any other means, for example internat links.
2s As soon as the collection device 3 is linked to the institute 1, it interrogates the latter, on the basis of the identification code or codes read on the card 61, on the authorization to debit the buyer's account for the amount of transaction. As soon as this authorization is received, the card 61 is debited from amount corresponding to the transaction, this amount, in electronic form 3o then being recorded by the link 7 to the seller's bank 4.
Simultaneously or more generally later during an operation of clearing routine between institute 1 and bank 4, the amount is definitively transmitted from institute 1 to bank 4.
According to a second embodiment of the link 6, it can be of the electromagnetic type, shown schematically in 62, the purse s electronics 2 comprising a transmission circuit and an antenna, while the collection device 3 comprises a receiver circuit and an antenna. In variant, this link 62 can be of the infrared or ultrasonic type, the transmitting and receiving devices being adapted to this type of link.
According to a third embodiment, one can have a cable 63 lo provided with two connectors cooperating with corresponding connectors installed respectively on the electronic purse 2 and the device collection 3.
The links 62 and 63 described above transmit the same type information than that transmitted by the chip card link 61 is described above. Relative to transmission 60 via smart card 61, a link of type 62 or 63 has the advantage of allowing transmission bidirectional between the electronic purse 2 and the device collection 3.
According to yet another variant, in the case where the purse 2o electronics 2 is provided with a built-in mobile phone 23, link 6 can be done using this device.
A very important aspect of the process and the system is security offered to the various partners in the transaction, the issuing institute 1, the buyer or holder of electronic purse 2 as well as the seller or 2s owner of the collection device 3 and his bank 4.
First of all the transaction is carried out without exchange of cash, which is a first security measure. In addition, since institute 1 knows in real time the state of the account of the holder of the electronic purse 2, she may grant spending authorization which may be greater than the amount fixes existing systems as long as the account holder remains in credit.
On the other hand, since the seller establishes a connection 7, 8 in real time during the payment of the transaction by the buyer, when institute 1 has granted its guarantee of payment of the transaction amount, the seller is assured of this s payment and can therefore accept a payment of an amount greater than one fixed amount. As an additional security measure, Institute 1 can grant the above guarantee only if the holder of the wallet electronic charged his electronic wallet 2 with an amount corresponding to that of the transaction or higher, during the day or in lo a time interval determined before the interrogation by the device 3. Special precautions must be taken in order to ensure that the holder of an electronic purse 2 wishing to carry a purchase is well ie holder recognized by institute 1 of said purse electronic. As already indicated the holder of the electronic purse They must enter a digital PIN code before any transaction. Others means of identification may also be provided, in particular means of detection of a parameter specific to the holder of the electronic purse. AT
for this purpose, the electronic purse 2 can be provided with a sensitive zone 25 on which the wearer places the imprint of one of his fingers, imprint who 2o is read and compared to a fingerprint stored in a circuit memory of the electronic purse 2. Only when a circuit of control checked that the wearer's fingerprint matches the footprint of the holder stored in the memory circuit of the electronic purse 2, that the transaction authorization is granted. Instead of control 2s of fingerprint as a means of recognition, other parameters can be used, such as the signature of the bearer who is at apply to the sensitive area 25. Note that the means of mentioned recognition can be used when multiple holders are recognized for a specific electronic wallet, for example 3o employees of a company with an electronic purse or family members. In this case, the memory circuit includes all fingerprints or all authorized signatures, the PIN code of each authorized user can be different in order to differentiate the users at the institute 1. When the internal circuit 22 of the purse 35 electronics 2 recognized the parameter entered, fingerprint, signature WO 99f31630 PCT / CH97 / 00471 or other, it can issue a recognition code, which can be separated from the identification code mentioned or combined with the identification code, or then the identification code can only be transmitted when the recognition is positive.
By the security means described, institute 1 knows that this is the holder that she knows of a specific electronic purse that acts, while the seller is assured of payment by the discharge he receives by the bond 7.8. By the means of identification described, the holder of a electronic money knows that a potential thief of his wallet io electronics cannot use it. The system thus described allows to avoid any fraud between any two of the system partners.
The method has been described with the establishment of a link 5 between the electronic wallet 2 and institute 1 before each transaction.
The user or holder of the electronic purse 2 can also, when he is planning to make one or more purchases during the day, complete their door-electronic money 2 of a determined amount by establishing a connection 5 with institute 1 at the start of the day for example, from a place where a such a connection is easily achievable, then successively debit its carrier electronic money 2 of the amounts of transactions carried out at different 2o collection devices 3. An advantage of such a method is that a only link 5 is established to fill the electronic purse 2 with electronic money, from a place where the connection is easy. In addition, the program menu built into the electronic wallet can advantageously include a function of restitution of the remaining amount 2s at the end of the day in the electronic purse 2 to the institute 1 in establishing a new link 5, this function being able to be automatic, i.e. activated at a fixed fixed time, or manual, i.e.
activated by the user. So there is no benefit in stealing a carrier.
change electronic which is regularly emptied of the balance of its currency content 3o electronic.
Various functions can extend the possibilities use of the electronic purse 2. Advantageously, the WO 99/31630 PCT / CI ~ i97 / 00471 program included in the electronic purse 2 allows you to carry out a transaction in any currency; when requesting authorization of expenditure, the user can specify the currency concerned, the transaction then done in that currency.
s Since it has a keyboard 20 and a screen 21, it is easy to have an appropriate circuit for use as a calculator. In this case, the electronic purse 2 is advantageously provided with a reader barcode 26, allowing the user making purchases in a supermarket where product prices are indicated by bar codes, to obtain io the total amount of his purchases after having passed the barcode reader in front of each of the labels with such a purchase code, so as to have time to establish a link 5 with the institute 1 and to get authorization to spend before going to the checkout, respectively collection device 3. In the case where the electronic purse 2 is includes a mobile phone, or can be connected to such a device, it is also possible to make purchases, respectively payments, during purchases by TV or on the Internat network.
As a variant or in addition, the electronic purse 2 can be fitted with a beacon 27, of ARGOS, GPS or other type, making it possible to 2o find an electronic purse that has been stolen or lost. In case theft or loss of the electronic wallet, the holder can notify institute 1 which first of all can empty the electronic purse and / or the deactivate via link 5 then activate a search by tag 27 in the case where the electronic purse 2 is provided with such a tag. Moreover, at 2s cases where an unauthorized carrier attempts to make a purchase using a door-electronic money, the seller could be informed of this fact when fétabüssement of the connection between the collection device 3 and the institute 1.
As a variant or in addition, and always in order to mitigate the risk theft of electronic purse 2, it can be completed with a 3o separate remote control 9, by which the user can send a signal 90, for example radioelectric to the electronic purse in order to deactivate and possibly order the operation to restore the remaining amount. This remote control 9 can advantageously be integrated in a separate portable telephone or other common object, like for example a key ring.
