Abstract

A data storage medium, e.g., an important personalized document, such as personal identity card, check card, etc., with graphic and/or text data in the coded and/or uncoded form. The graphic and/or text data are at least partially produced on a support and additionally reproduced on the data storage medium at least partially as separate, optically variable elements. This makes forgery or falsification of the data extremely difficult or even to prevent it.

Description

Docket # 55196 DATA STORAGE MEDIUM

FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention pertains to a data storage medium, e.g., important personalized documents, such as personal identity cards, check cards, etc., with graphic and/or text data in the coded and/or uncoded form.

s BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
A data storage medium in the form of an important personalized document is, e.g., in the form of a check card, debit card etc., which is formed in a multilayer manner by a bed or support made of paper/cardboard or plastic and two transparent cover films. Graphic and/or text data in the coded and/or uncoded form, such as the name of a bank or account, as well as the name and/or the photo of the owner of the check card, are located on the support. Even though forgery and falsification of the check card are made difflcult by the multilayer structure, they are not completely prevented.

SUMMARY AND OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a data storage medium of this type in which forgery or falsification of the data is made extremely difflcult or even prevented.
To attain this object, the present invention provides for the graphic and/or text data of one data storage medium to be additionally reproduced on the data storage medium at least partially as separate, optically variable elements on the other, transparent and/or partially transparent. Thus, the data storage medium according to the present invention colllplises the combination of two analog data storage media.
One contains the graphic and/or text data in the coded and/or uncoded form and the other contains the graphic and/or text data at least partially as separate optically variable elements. The two analog data storage media are combined in a data storage medium, wherein, e.g., a layered structure comprising the data storage medium containing the graphic and/or text data in the coded and/or uncoded form and the additional data storage medium containing the graphic and/or text data at least partially as separate, optically variable elements is formed. The data storage medium that conlaills the holographic information is designed as a transparent and/or partially llansparent data storage medium. The data or information contained on the data S storage medium is additionally reproduced on the transparent and/or partially transparent data storage medium completely or partially as separate, optically variable elements in the form of diffraction grids, holograms and/or cinegrams.
The basic idea of the present invention is to reproduce the variable and/or nonvariable data of the data storage medium or document by at least two different methods. The two data storage media are combined with one another such that a new data storage medium is formed. The duplicated information is the direct linking of the two reproduction processes, wherein the physical properties of diffraction grids are utilized on the additional transparent and/or partially llansparent data storage medium to reproduce the data or information.
The content of the data or information to be recorded or transferred changes from one data storage medium to the next and from one document to the next. Thus, a corresponding number n of data storage media or documents is formed in one edition, and these data storage media or documents contaill certain data or pieces of information duplicated, i.e., as separate, optically variable elements in the form of diffraction grids, holograms and/or cinegrams in the case according to the present invention, besides a printout or a photographic transfer. The optically variable elements may be additionally safeguarded by a machine-detectable feature.
The data or information to be processed are detected manually and/or by means of a machine, outputted directly completely or partially directly and partially stored and then oulpulled or completely stored and subsequently outputted. The data output is S performed with at least two different output processes and corresponding data storage media, which are subjected to further processing into the end product in separate operations.
Due to the use of the combination of data storage media accordi~g to the present invention, it is possible to provide, e.g., security products with safeguarding techniques such that forgery or falsification is made extremely difficult or prevented by the combination of safeguarding techniques specific of the reproduction processes.
The present invention will be explained in greater detail below on the basis of a data storage medium shown schematically in the drawings in the form of a multilayered personal identity card or other important document such as a multilayer, personalized document, check card, etc.
The various features of novelty which characterize the invention are pointed outwith particularity in the claims annexed to and forming a part of this disclosure. For a better understanding of the invention, its operating advantages and specific objects attained by its uses, reference is made to the accompanying drawings and descliplive matter in which preferred embodiments of the invention are illustrated.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a general cross sectional view through the data storage medium;
Figure 2 is a front view of the four layers of the data storage medium as S individual pictures; and Figure 3 is an exploded view of the four layers of the data storage medium.

DET~TT FT~ DESCRIPTION
OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
The data storage medium 1 is a printed material or support material con~ictin.~
of, e.g., paper/cardboard, plastic, metal or a combination of paper/cardboard, plastic and metal, as well as of such a combined material with an acceptor layer, e.g., a photographic emulsion, special coatings for printing, ink jet, thermosublimation, heat transfer, xerographic or other methods.
The data storage medium 2 applied by lamination is a transparent and/or partially transparent holographic carrier, e.g., one con~i~ting of a photopolymer material, for processing in an optical/digital process, or films for receiving impressed holographic structures for processing according to mechanical processes (this may also be cinegram structure). The graphic and/or text data of the data storage medium 2 are arranged offset in space from the graphic and/or text data of the data storage medium 1, as is apparent from Figures 2 and 3.

The data storage media 1 and 2 are joined together in special processes, wherein the data storage media 1 and 2 are connected directly or with primer layers, e.g., heat-se~ling, pressure-sensitive or multicomponent adhesives and by reactive systems, e.g., W, IR, electron beams, etc.
S The joined data storage media 1 and 2 may additionally be provided on one side or on both sides with a transparent protective layer 3 and/or 4, wherein the protective layer 3, 4 may consist of different materials, e.g., a monolayer or multilayer plastic with primer layers, e.g., heat-se~ling, pressure-sensitive, and multicomponent adhesives and reactive systems, e.g., W, IR, electron beams, etc., or monolayer/multilayer lacquers in the form of multicomponent or reactive systems, such as W, IR, electron beams, etc.
The data storage medium 1 contains usual security features 5, e.g., watermarks, veining fibers, etc. The protective layers 3 and 4 may also contain additional security features.
While specific embodiments of the invention have been shown and described in detail to illustrate the application of the principles of the invention, it will be understood that the invention may be embodied otherwise without departing from such principles.
