Abstract

A sliding door or swinging/sliding door for vehicles includes a revolving endless drive member which travels around two guide rollers arranged above the door, wherein the door leaf or each door leaf is connected to one of the two portions of this endless drive member. The drive for moving the drive member is composed essentially of an electric motor, possibly with a gear unit flanged to the electric motor, particularly an angular gear unit, and a gear wheel or friction wheel which cooperates with a correspondingly dimensioned gear wheel or friction wheel which is mounted coaxially with one of the two guide rollers for the drive member. The drive is supported so as to be rotatable about an axis or slidable along a guide, wherein the drive block is movable back and forth between a position corresponding to the normal operation in which the two wheels interact and a position corresponding to an emergency opening in which the two wheels do not interact.

Description

BACKGROUND OF THE lNv~NlION

1. Field of the Invention The present invention relates to a sliding door or swinging/sliding door for vehicles. The door includes a revolving endless drive means, such as a chain, a rope, a belt or the like which travels around two guide rollers arranged above the door, wherein the door leaf or each door leaf is connected through an engagement means to one of the two portions of this endless drive element. The guidance of the door leaves may be effected in any conventional manner and does not require explanation herein.

The drive for moving the revolving drive means is composed essentially of an electric motor, possibly with a gear unit flanged to the electric motor, particularly an angular gear unit, and a gear wheel or friction wheel which cooperates with a correspondingly dimensioned gear wheel or friction wheel which is mounted coaxially with one of the two guide rollers for the revolving drive means.
2. Description of the Related Art Drives of the above-described type are very popular because of their simple and compact construction. If the door is exclusively a sliding door, the connection between the revolving drive means and the individual door leaves is extremely simple;
however, also in the case of swinging/sliding doors, it is also possible, when using appropriately constructed engagement means at the door leaves, to transmit the swinging movement of the swinging/sliding door without further joints or movable mechanisms to the revolving drive means. It is advantageous in this connection if in the position in which the engagement means is located near one of the guide rollers, the engagement means assumes a position in which the revolving drive means is not twisted and is not displaced from its straight position. In the respectively other end position of the door leaf, in which the engagement means is located near the middle between the two guide rollers, such a torsion or displacement of the revolving drive means can be effected without problems.

The door drives of the above-described type have the disadvantage that, when the drive fails, for example, during a power outage, breakage of the gear unit, when the motor is blocked or the like, it is not possible to manually open the door because the type of force transmission means that the drive line is of the self-locking type. On the other hand, this is entirely desirable for safety reasons during normal operation because even in those cases in which the door is not completely closed and the door leaf is stopped before reaching its final closing position, for example, by coming into contact with an obstacle, opening of the door by passengers or as a result of inertia forces during travel of the vehicle is not possible.

S ~ RY OF THE lNVL llON

Therefore, it is the primary object of the present invention to construct the door drive in a door of the above-described type in such a way that opening of the door becomes possible during emergency operation.

In accordance with the present invention, the drive block is supported so as to be rotatable about an axis or slidable along a guide, wherein the drive block is movable back and forth between a position corresponding to the normal operation in which the two wheels interact and a position corresponding to an emergency opening in which the two wheels do not interact.

The movement is advantageously effected by directly mounting a handle on a guide plate supporting the guide, wherein the handle is located in the upper edge area of the door immediate;y adjacent the drive and, thus, is easily visible and accessible to everybody during an emergency.

Since usually the revolving drive means with its guide rollers constitute a separate component for assembly reasons and adjusting reasons, and a motor including gear unit and drive wheel constitutes another component which is placed inexpensively in operative connection with the drive wheel of the guide roller by a resilient suspension or the like, in order to avoid adjustments as they are necessary in the case of a rigid connection, it is easily possible to construct this resilient suspension of the actual drive unit in such a way that disengagement of the connection between the two wheels is carried out by pivoting or displacing the drive unit against the force of its contact spring.

The various features of novelty which characterize the invention are pointed out with particularity in the claims annexed to and forming a part of the disclosure. For a better understanding of the invention, its operating advantages, specific objects attained by its use, reference should be had to the drawing and descriptive matter in which there are illustrated and described preferred embodiments of the invention.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING

In the drawing:

Fig. 1 is a schematic illustration of the upper portion of a two-leaf sliding door or swinging/sliding door equipped with a door drive according to the present invention, shown in the normal operating position;

Fig. 2 shows the door of Fig. 1 in the emergency actuating position;

Fig. 3 is an illustration, on a larger scale, showing a de~ail of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 shows the detail of Fig. 3 in the position corresponding to Fig. 2.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

Fig. 1 of the drawing shows a door with two door leaves 1, 2 which are equipped with engagement members 3, 4 which, in turn, are immovably connected to a portion 5 or 6 of a flexible drive means 9 which revolves around two guide rollers 7, 8.

Depending on the intended use, the drive means 9 may be composed of a rope, a chain or a belt and the material of this element may be steel or synthetic material. The connection between the engagement members and the respective portion of the revolving drive means 9 can be effected in various ways. For example, it is possible to screw, glue or weld these engagement members to the revolving drive means; however, it is also possible to mount separate stops on both sides of the engagement members on the drive means, wherein this may be particularly advantageous if it is made possible as a result that the engagement members can carry out pivoting movements relative to the drive means about the axis of the drive member 9 without twisting the latter.

The drive means 9 is moved by one of the guide rollers; in the illustrated embodiment, it is the left guide roller 8. For this purpose, either the guide roller itself is constructed as a , gear wheel or it supports a gear wheel or a chain wheel, or a gear wheel 10 is connected to the shaft of the guide roller 8.
This gear wheel 10, in turn, is rotated by a drive gear wheel 11 which is already part of the actual drive block 21 composed of a motor 12, a gear unit 13 (angular gear unit), possibly an assembly plate 18 and the actual drive gear wheel 11.

This drive block 21 is mounted on the car body so as to be pivotable about a bolt 19 or so as to be displaceable in a guide;
the drive block 21 is subjected to a load as a result of the force of a spring, not shown, or due to its own weight, in such a way that an engagement between the two drive wheels 10 and 11 is effected.

In the illustrated embodiment, these wheels are gear wheels;
however, it is also possible to use friction wheels, wherein the choice depends on the torques to be transmitted and the occurring accelerations and the available contact pressure forces between the friction wheels.

In accordance with the present invention, uncoupling of the drive elements required for manually opening the door is effected by means of a swingable guide member 14, shown in Figs. 3 and 4, which is swingable by means of hand lever 15 about the axis of the driven guide roller 8 which simultaneously forms the axis of the driven gear wheel 10. Of course, it is also possible to select another axis of rotation, however, this would mean that additional structural elements are required.

The guide member 14 has a guide slot 16 which is engaged by a pin or a roller 17 which is mounted on an assembly plate 18 of the drive block 21. When the lever 15 is swung in the direction of arrow 20 shown in Fig. 4, the guide slot 16 is moved relative to the pin 17 and causes as a result of its shape a swinging of the drive block 21 about its point of rotation 19, so that the drive wheels 10, 11 are disengaged, as indicated by the distance x in Fig. 4. Consequently, in this position of the lever 15, the door can be easily moved in both direction be manually moving the door leaf 1 and/or the door leaf 2 without resulting in a rotation of the drive wheel 11, the gear unit 13 or the motor 12.

In the illustrated embodiment, the guide slot is constructed in such a way that it has the tendency to remain by itself in the normal opèrating position illustrated in Fig. 3 as well as in the emergency actuating position illustrated in Fig. 4. Thus, the guide slot constitutes a mechanical equivalent to a bistable flip-flop.

In the illustrated embodiment, this goal is met by the shape and arrangement of the guide slot 16 whose end portions 22, 23 extend essentially normal relative to the straight connecting line between the projection 17 and the axis of rotation of the guide plate, so that the end portions 22, 23 always extend at a constant distance from the axis of rotation of the guide plate.
The two end portions 22, 23 are connected to each other through an inclined middle portion 24.

Of course, it is also possible to construct the guide member is such a way that, when the lever 15 is released, this lever returns by itself into the normal operating position shown in Fig. 3 and again secures the door movement as a result of the force acting on the drive block 21 produced by a spring and/or its own weight, or also as a result of a spring separately provided for this purpose and acting on the guide plate 14.

The advantage that the configuration according to the invention automatically causes the return of the door operation to normal operation is contrasted by the disadvantage that, in the case of an emergency, unskilled passengers who do not know the device must first recognize that an emergency operation of the door can only be carried out when the lever 15 is being held;

particularly if only one passenger is present, this may also lead to physical problems.

The present invention is not limited to the illustrated embodiment. Rather, various modifications are possible. For example, lt possible to select different size ratios of the gear wheels 10, 11 which essentially depends on the motor and gear unit being used; it is also possible to shift the point of rotation of the drive block 21 or of the guide plate 14 to another location or to provide a lateral movement instead of a rotating or swinging movement.

When friction wheels are used for the drive wheels 10, 11, it may be necessary to provide during normal operation an appropriate contact pressure force between the wheels which could be effected by an appropriate spring-loaded configuration of the guide plate 14 or in such a way that, in the position shown in Fig. 3, the projection 17 does not contact the guide slot 16, so that during normal operation the guide slot 16 has no influence on the kinematics and dynamics of the drive. However, this may definitely be advantageous in the illustrated embodiment with gear wheels because in that case the adjustment of the guide slot and the adjustment of the position of the gear wheels can be carried out together.

As used herein, the term "guide means" is a more general term than "guide slot". Thus, a guide slot always only makes possible a movement along a predetermined path, or a branched path in the case of switching guide slots, while a transverse movement beyond the necessary play results in damage. A guide means includes this situation, but also those cases in which, for example, a roller is pressed by a spring against a guide, while the roller can be moved away without damage when an appropriate counterforce is applied, for example, in the valve control of internal combustion engine.

While specific embodiments of the invention have been shown and described in detail to illustrate the inventive principles, it will be understood that the invention may be embodied otherwise without departing from such principles.
