ADJUSTAR~E WaIST_AND FOR GARMENTS

ls~ r~u~ ~ ~ (JN

This invention relate3 to an adjustable waistband for garments and, more par~ rly, to an adjustable wai3tband for garments which utilizes a floating type pocket and which i n~ ~ol~teg a clean or fly-less type garment style.

R~ n 1~ ) OF THE lNVl:.LI ~ lUN

Adjustable waistbands for garments are known. Such previous adjustable waistbands, however, in~rr~te designs which suffer various disadvantages. In one such design, the adjustable waistband feature operates in~ ntly of the normal entry into the garment. In such designs, the wai3tband is adjusted over a particular area of the garment which is not ~ Llical to the entry location and which, therefore, adversely affects the ~rp~r~n~e of the garment when u~ed. In another design, the waistband adjustment i3 located on one of side of the garment only which may cause inconvenience if the user is left handed and which may affect the ~rr~ n~ of the garment when the waistband is adju~ted. In yet a further design, the adjustment is 2 1 826~6 located on the front of the garment which may be uncomfortable for the u3er in the stomach area. Other known designs use fasteners which are 1lnn~r~ ri ly expensive and ~;ffiCl~lt to obtain if a fastener i8 lost or broken. Yet other known de3igns have an adjustment feature which is opQr~hle i n~ ntly from the entry area and the pockets of the garment. By doing 30 ~ the ~y t-y of the garment and, therefore, its Arp~rAn~e is adversely affected.

SUMMaRY OF THE lNv~L~ lUN

~ cor~;ng to one aspect of the invention, there is provided an adju~table waistband for a garment, said garment having a front panel ~I-lle~Led to a first waistband, said front panel ~fining an entry to a pair of pockets, said pockets being ~y -tlically located on opposite sides of the center Of said garment, said first waistband of said front panel being adjustably o~l.lle~d to a second waistband ~ln~e~Led to said garment by fa3teners, said fasteners being positioned -y ~-ically on opposite sides of the center of said garment.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE SEVERaL VIEWS OF THE nP~TN~c A spe~-;f;~ : -'; t of the invention will now be tir~tr;hr~ by way of exr~ple only, with the use of drawings in which:

Figure 1 is a ~;A tic isometric view of a garment illustrating the adjustable waistband according to the invention with one ~ide of the waistband illustrated in an unattached or open condition for descriptive ~u~o3e3;

Figure 2 is an ;- L-ic view of the garment of Figure 1 but illustrating the waistband in its closed position;

Figure 3A iq a plan and ~i; r _ tic view of the forward and rear waistbands of the Figure 1 and 2 : - t illustrating a fastener configuration according to a further t of the invention; and Figure 3B i8 a plan and ~; r _ tic view of the forward and rear wai~tbands similar to Figure 3A but illustrating a fastener configuration ~trortl; ng to yet a further '_'; t of the invention.

DES~I~.l~.. OF ~ C ~MR~Tr 2 1 82 t~i 2 6 With Lefe en~e now to the drawings, a garment which ;n~o~ tes the invention is shown g~n~r~lly at 10 in Figure 1. The garment 10, in this case, is a pair of ~rou~r.q which ;n~orp~rates a front panel 11 extending -y L~ically on opposite sides of the vertical center line 12 of the garment 10. The front panel 11 is flyless and may have pleats 13 as illustrated or it may be pleatless.

The front panel 11 defines the entry area 20 to two pockets 14 shown in phantom in Figure 1. The entry area 20 slopes ~i~gnn~1ly inwardly from the point 21 where the front panel 11 meets the ining portion 22 of the garment 10 to the front waistband 23. Front waistband 23 i3 connected to the front panel 11 by sewing as is known.

The waistband 23 of the front panel 11 is ~ e~Lèd to a second or inside waistband 24 of the garment 10 at two locations 30, the two locations being ~ L ical on opposite sides of the center line 12. A plurality of slits or buttonh~le~ 31 are formed in the waistband 11 of the front panel 11 and buttons 32 are mounted on the waistband 24 80 as to be aonne~Led with the ,7~ tary but~nh~
31 and thereby hold the front waistband 23 to the second 21 ~2626 wai~tband 24 as will be ~q~rih~.

Two elastic portions 33 are also in~ ~Led into second waistband 24 The elastic portions 33 provide further adjustment of the second waistband 24 relative to first waistband 23 Conveniently, two buttons 32 are shown on the second waistband 24 Likewise, two buttonh~ 31 are positioned on the ~irst waistband 23 which operate to allow entry for buttons 32 Thus, a plurality of connections are defined.
As shown on the left hand side of front waistband 23 in Figure 1, the button 32 on waistband 24 located the closest to the center line 12 is ~nne~Led to the but~nh~Ie 31 which is located the rurLl,e_L from center line 12 Thus the garment 10 is in its condition o~ greatest cil~u~fe~_..ce around the waistbands 23, 24 However, the button 32 on second waistband 24 which is ru LLe~L from the center line 12 could be c~....e~L~d to the buttonhole 31 on first waistband 23 which is located close3t to center line 12 In this attachment configuration, the garment 10 would assume its condition of least ci ~u~fere-lce.

2 1 ~2626 The elastic portion3 33 operate to provide ~nhan~

adjustment, ~Ypan~ing and contracting a3 n~C~ary to offer further adjustment to the user after the preferred location for the c~..r.e_Lion between the first and second waistband3 23, 24, ~~e~Lively, is obtained OPERATION

In operation, the user will select the attachment configuration of the buttons 32 on the second waistband 24 and the buttnnhnl~ 31 on first waistband 23 which, in conjunction with the elastic portions 33, operate to obtain the most comfortable fit for the user. The aLL ~ t configuration 3elected, however, should be ~y L ical about the center line 12; that is, the configuration of the ~ iate button 32 mounted in ~L~ iate buttonhole 31 on the left side of center line 12 3hould be the 3ame as the attachment configuration on the right hand side of center line 12 It will be parf;c~lArly noted that the forward panel 11 i3 connected directly to the waistband 23 and that as the aL t configuration i3 changed, so will the entry area .

20 to the pockets 14. Howevsr, the forward panel 11 will retain its 8y - L-ical configuration on opposite 3ide3 of the center line 12 and the Arp~ n~e of the garment 10 will not change as the att~ t configuration is changed which i3 ~ Ahle.

In pLotoLy~e garments con~L-u~Led to ;n~orporate the invention, it has been found that a total adjustment of between 1/2" and 3" by the fastener3 of the waistband3 23, 24 i8 p~ ~fe-~ed. The fasteners in the form of buttons 32 are best located within the range of 1/4" to 1/2" of each other and the ela3tic portions 33 should pr~f~r~hly tension the slack of an ; n~ tal fastener 32 up to 1/2" for every 1" of ela3tic.

The ~nfi~tion of the fa3teners and the type of fasteners can, of cour3e, be changed to allow for more fl~Y;h;l;ty and to change the ~pp~ ~n~e of the garment 10.
Reference i3 made to Figure 3A where the fir3t waistband 40 has a buttonhole 41 at the end f~-Ll-e~L from the center line 12 and a button 42 mounted next to but~nh~le 41. A pair of buttons 44, 45 is po3itioned on the inside of waistband 40.
T.;~ ~, 8econd waigtband 43 ha3 a buttonhole 46 positioned Glogest to center line 12 and two buttons 47, 48 located fu Ll.egL from center line 12, one of the two buttons 47, 48 being op~r~hle to extend through buttonhole 41. Button 42 i8 not functional except to provide for an ~L~ ate Arp~r~n~e of a second button to match either of the buttons 47, 48 which extend through buttonhole 41.

In operation in the Figure 3A : -- t, if button 47 ~xtend~ through buttonhole 41, then button 44 will extend through buttonhole 46 on waistband 43 to 3ecure the waistband 43 to waistband 40 and to comfortably keep the two wai3tbands 43, 44 to~LI-e If button 48 extend3 through butt~nh~le 41, then button 45 will extend through butt~nhole 46.

Yet a further : -' - t of the invention i3 illustrated in Figure 3B. In this : '-' t, hook and loop fasteners 60, 61 (r ~ ~: VELCR0) are provided on the inside of front waistband 62 and out3ide of wai3tband 63.
Likewise, two buttons 64, 65 are attached to the waistband 63. A buttonh~le 66 is provided in front or first wai3tband 62 and a button 67 is al30 positioned on first waistband 62 to match the ~pp~r~nce of either of the buttons 64, 65 which extend through the but~nh~l~ 66 as the user may desire i5 p~ ~.fer~d.

The hook and loop fa3teners 60, 61 are convenient to remove the inconvenience which is inherent is connecting the buttons and but~nh~ of the previous : '-' ts. They act, however, for the same reasons; that is, to comfortably connect the first and second waistbands and to prevent one from folding relative to the other thereby avoiding discomfort for the usQr.

It will further be appreciated that although the invention has been spe~;f;~lly ~ 7~r;h~' as used in association with mens trousers or pants, it is also useful in association with ladies and ~h;l~'~n~n~wear. ~re~;f;~lly, the invention is also useful in golf, tennis and other activewear clothing which ; n~l 7-r7~ skirts and shorts.

.~any changes to the invention are contemplated and the sp~if;~ ' ts ~ ;hed herein should be taken as illustrative of the invention only and not as limiting its scope as ~ ;Ately defined in accordance with the S~ _ ying claims.
