Abstract
An ecological coffin is provided of a folded corrugated recycled paperboard coffin, having two major parts. An inner body made of 100% recycled corrugated paperboard, laminated with a thin acid resistant polypropylene film and an outer body made of two identical pieces. The outer main body portion of the coffin is constructed of recycled corrugated paperboard and is made of two identical pieces that are jointed together by applying water soluble glue and small metallic stitches along a joint lip on each of the two pieces.
Description

17.c~ogi~~' Casket Field of the Invention s This invention relates to a pal;c.boa.d coffin and more particularly relates to a two-piece main body portion.
Background of the Invention Cardboard and paperboard caskets are well known in the art. For ~ ..ple, such a coffin is ~ osPA by ~lc-~ -die Gillard in a PCT patent applic~ion No. WO 95/08973 entitled Foldable Coffin. The coffin disclosed by Gillard is made of a single blank of c~Jl,Gald that is foldable along fold lines to yield a .elalively sturdy box. It has been 15 found however, that this one piece construction has limit~tion~ For c ~c~ in North America it is difficult and at in some in~ ces not practicable to build a coffin out of a single long blank, as such long blanks are often not available. Thus, it is an object ofthe invention to provide a two piece coffin that can be constructed into a single sturdy coffin.
20 Summaly of the Invention In ~ ~ col~ce with the invention a coffin is provided having an outer main body comprising two i~Pnti~l blanks, the blanks being made of a rt;cycled papell,oard, each blank having a joining lip, the lips being ~tt~chp~ to one another by an adhesive, and 2s r~lced with ~ p 2154~9 Brief Description of the Drawings FY~ lfi-y embod;~ ofthe invention will now be des~;libed in conjlmction s with the dl~wh~gs in which:
DWG N 1 is a plan view of single cardboard blank ~h~Wing one half of the outer body portion of the llnfol~led coffin;
DWG N 2 is a plan view of a cardboard blank of an iMer body pollion, DWG N 3 - 8 are pictorial views of the coffin an various stages of assel-lbly lo DWG N 9 is a view of .'~ .ing clips in acco~ ~e with the invention; and, DWGN 10 is a pi~torial view ofthe coffin shown ass_,lll~led and dosed.
Detailed Dacription The coffin in acc-jldance with this invention is a folded corrugated papell~oardcoffin, having two major parts: an inner body made of 100% recycled corrugated paperboard, l~min~ted with a thin acid l~;,;sl~ll poly~r~pylene film, and an outer body make oftwo identical pieces of 100% recycled corrugated paperboard, constructed with an imitation wood grain preplinled and water-proofed outer liner and hllil~lioll wood grain printed inside liner.
The outer or main body ofthe coffin is constructed from two i~lentic~l pieces of100% re~;yl,led corrugated paperboard joined togethP,r by applying water soluble glue and small met~llic stitches along a joint lip on each of two pieces as is shown in DWG N 1 2s The inner body is made of 100% recycled corrugated paperboard and is ses....les~ly folded along fold lines into a co~ r as is shown in DWG N 2. The co~ Pr snugly fits into the main outer body ofthe coffin and is des;PI-ed to r~ ce the structural ~ nglh 21S4~
ofthe main body to hold various amino acids during decomposition ofthe cadaver by A~ p the inside ofthe co~ er with a polyl,lu~ylene fflm to hold the acids for a period oftime sllffic~Pnt for the acids to n~ul~ e~
Both the outer and inner body pap~,l,ua d blanks may be shipped in a flat folded or "knoç~ed down" form, piled 8-10 feet high w;lhoul clu~hulg, thus r~uilillg ,,.;I~
storage or sllippill~ space. Packages of 1, 4, or 10 coffins are available. PACL-agP~S are er~nnnm:^slly dç~ignPd to be h~n-lled by two persons m~ml~lly, in case of the pz~l ~e of one or four units and by simple hand truck.
The knocked-down coffins can be folded into sturdy stand-up coffins by insertingdie-cut flaps (a) into colle~ondillg slots (b) without using any tools and re~lu;. ;i~ no special skills as is shown in figures 3 to 8.
To ensure the tight fit and ;dentic~l shape at various loads, specially dç~ignedplastic clips are applied, dçsi~p~d to fit in coin~ lin~ opel~ings ofthe "folded boards" (c) by ~llapping them tightly togP,thPr. The design permits pliable applic~tion at closing and removing if l-eces,s~y, but assures that the boards are held togp~th~r rigidly and se-iulely, as is shown in DWG N 9.
All corrugated paperboard parts are made of 100% recycled cellulose fibers willluul the use of GhP.mic~l agents such as chlor or fluor delivalives in the l~y~,lh~g process.
During construction and the fini~hin~ ofthe corrugated paphlJGards, no ultraviolet M~ tion is applied thus ass.~ g that the board is easily and totally biodegradable. The ass~ led coffin can se ;~ly hold the weight of a large body that can physically fit into it wilLoul d;slo~ g its d;---~ on~ See DWGN 10. The coffin ~IIe~ S to prevent the co~1A~ ;on ofthe soil and water-table by its liquid-proofinner body and in the case of incineration, by e~ p. very low hydrocarbon mass flow and virtually no black smoke.
Of course, llul-ler~us other embo~im~nts may be envisaged wilLoul depalling fromthe spirit and scope of the invention.
