Abstract

It is a safety feature light to be fitted to the rear window or rear area of any motorised vehicle. This safety feature light will be a white light of low intensity. This light is activated manually when the driver presses the connected button conveniently located on the dashboard of the vehicle.
By pressing this button the safety light will flash for about three to five seconds. The flashing light will indicate to the driver immediately behind to take caution: e.g high-beam interference from his vehicle, hazardous road conditions ahead or pedestrian ahead crossing at cross-walk. The intention of this safety feature light (or Advance Warning Light) is to provide an extra road safety feature on motorised vehicles, thereby allowing drivers to take extra pre-cautionary measures and reduce accidents.

Description

21~98!32 SPECIFICATION

The invent;ion relates ~;o a low int;ensit;y whit;e light: t;o be fitt;ed t;o t;lle rear window or rear area of any mot;orised vehicle. The ligh~ is act;ivat;ed by a butt;on located on t;he dashboard of t;he ve~icle. By pressing and releasing the but;t;on on t;he dasllboard, t;he signal light; will flash several t;imes for approximat;ely t;hree to five seconds. Every ~;ime t;he but;t;on is pressed t;he signal light; will begin t;o flash.

The safet;y light; serves many purposes. By act;ivat;ing t;he light;
t;he driver is alert;ing t;he approaching vellicle, behind, to be prepared t;o stop or of higll-beam int;erference.
For example, Pedest;rian Cross Walk:
I have found t;hat; when vehicle, say, A st;ops at; an int;ersect;ion or cross-walk t;o allow a pedest;rian t;o cross, t;he approaching vehicle B's view of t;he int;ersect;ion or cross-walk is reduced or obst;ruct;ed by t;he t;int;ed windows of vehicle A or t;he mere size of vehicle A (eg Van, Truck).
Vehicle B may assume t;hat: t;he driver of vehicle A has simply st;opped or is making a safe turn. Vehicle B t;hen proceeds in t;he adjacent; lane t;owards the int;ersect;ion or cross-walk.
The driver of vehicle B is suddenly forced t;o st;op when t;he pedest;rian appears in full view from in front; of vehicle A.
Many accident;s occur t;his way. The signal light; of vehicle A will have alert;ed driver of vehicle B to be prepared t;o st;op.

21~9~92 High-beam int;erference: some vehicles t;ravel unknowingly wit;h t;heir higll-beam headligllt;s on creat;ing a blinding effect;
on t;he driver or drivers ahead. By act;ivat;ing t;he signal (flashing) light;, t;he driver in t;he preceding vehicle is alerted of higll-beam int;erference from his/ller car or vehicle.
Presently, drivers deal wit;h higll-beam int;erference by eit;her lane-changing or alt:ering t;heir rear-view mirrors.

Following Too Closely: some vehicles t;ravel t;oo closely behind ot;her vehicles. This can oft;en lead t;o accident;s wllen t;he front; vehicle suddenly llas to break. By act;ivat;ing t;he flashing light; t;he driver responsible for 'following t;oo closely' is caut;ioned from doing so if t;he driver has t;o st;op or break suddenly.

Defect;ed headlight;s or absence of headligllt;s: by act;ivating t;he flashing light; t;he driver is alert;ed t;hat; he or she is driving wit;h a defect;ed headligllt; or no headligllts.
Also a driver wit;nessing a vehicle leaving an ent;rance-way t;o ent;er int;o the flow of t;raffic, can act;ivat;e t;he flashing signal t;o alert; approaching drivers t;o be prepared t;o st;op.
Many drivers, unaware t;hat a vehicle is ent;ering t;he roadway from an ent;rance way or lane way, proceed on the out;er lane only t;o suddenly llave t;o break t;o avoid a collision.

Hazardous road conditions al~ead: by activating tlle flaslling ligllt it would indicate to tlle driver, immediately bellind, of possible collision allead or llazardous road conditions allead. Tllis would give tlle driver ample time to reduce speed or be prepared to stop.

Tlle flaslling ligllt will vary in frequency. For example, approximately tllree to five seconds will indicate to tlle driver immediately bellind of lligll-beam interference or lleadligllt problems. Continuous flaslling, fifteen seconds or more, will indicate to tl~e driver of external conditions, e.g, following too closely, pedestrian crossing, road conditions or traffic conditions allead.

Witl~ an increasing number of vellicles l~aving tinted windo~s, drivers are finding it more difficult to see beyond tl~e vel~icle immediately in front of tllem. In case of sudden breaking, on tlle roads or lligllways, rear-end collision invariably occurs.

Tllis new invention of tlle low intensity safety ligllt or Advance Warning Ligllt, wllen implemented, can provide drivers witll advance warning tl)ereby reducing road and l~igllway traffic accidents. Tllere is presently no sucll safety ligllting feature on motorised vellicles any~llere.

Tllis simple safety ligllt unit is affixed to tlle rear windo~

or rear area of any motorised vellicle and must be easily visible from bellind by motorists. Fig. 1.

213~8~2 The button that activates tllis light is situated on tlle dashboard of the vehicle and is manually operated by the driver. See Fig. 2.
The button or activator can also be located or ins~alled anywhere on the dashboard or steering column of the vehicle.
Electrical wiring will run from ~he button or activator along the panel of the vehicle to the light fixture at the rear of the vehicle. Source of electrical power will be from the battery of the motorised vehicle.
