Abstract
A safety device for use on mountain bicycles extending laterally from the left side handlebar warning other vehicles to maintain a prescribed distance while passing cyclist.
When this safety device is not utilized by the cyclist, it conveniently inserts into the left side of the handlebar for storage, thereby establishing it's "hide-away"
novelty/function.
When this safety device is not utilized by the cyclist, it conveniently inserts into the left side of the handlebar for storage, thereby establishing it's "hide-away"
novelty/function.
Description
Specification This invention relates to a manually operable safety device for mountain bicycles which provides a warning for vehicles to maintain a prescribed distance when passing the cyclist.
It is common in previous safety devices to be secured onto the frame of the bicycle. Although the purpose of these safety devices [t-o provide a prescribed safety distance for passing vehicles] is appreciated by the cyclist, the problem of consumer acceptance occurs when the safety device is "stored" or "not in use". Simply put, many consumers do not appreciate the unsightly appearance of these safety devices on their bicycles.
I believe that by designing a safety device which inserts fully and hides-away completely into the left side handlebar of a mountain bicycle when "not in use" or "in storage", Will succeed in ~limin~ting the above mentioned consumer unacceptance problem.

-Drawings ln drawings which illustrate embodiments of the invention, FIGURE 1 identifies the components required of the safety device in relation to the left side handlebar of a mountain bicycle, FIGURE 2 identifies how the safety device would be utilized in relation to the left side handlebar of a mountain bicycle, FIGURE 3 identifies how the ~Irolled up" safety device would be positioned inserted into the left side handlebar of a mountain bicycle.
The safety device illustrated comprises a plastic rod [1] which extends left laterally when utilized and inserts right laterally when stored inside the left side handlebar of a mountain bicycle. A reflective circular sticker/material [2] allows the safety device to function during daytime or night-time hours, and is attached to a triangular safety flag [3] comprised from a light vinyl fluorescent material. A plastic clip [4] secures the triangular safety flag [3] in its "rolled up" while stored inside the left side handlebar. A plastic plug [5] allows the safety device to be attached effectively to the left side handlebar of amountain bicycle.
The left side handlebar [A] and gooseneck stem [B] of a mountain bicycle are identified in the drawings only to clearly illustrate where and how the safety device operates, attaches, and stores in relation to the mountain bicycle. These two components [A] and [B] are not part of the safety device.

Claims
1.) A manually operable safety device which provides a warning for vehicles to maintain a prescibed distance when passing the cyclist, comprising of a plastic rod which extends left laterally when utilized and inserts right laterally when stored in the left side handlebar of a mountain bicycle, a fluorescent triangular vinyl safety flag which mounts securely onto the plastic rod, a circular reflective sticker/material attached onto the center portion of the triangular safety flag, a plastic clip which mounts onto the plastic rod and secures the triangular safety flag during the "rolled up" storage position, and a plastic plug which allows the safety device to be attached to the left side handlebar of a mountain bicycle, and which allows the safety device to extend left laterally from the left side handlebar of a mountain bicycle when utilized by the cyclist, and which allows the safety device to be inserted inside the left side handlebar of a mountain bicycle when stored by the cyclist.
