Description

ROOT CUTTING ~nuv~ BLADE

Field of the Invention 5This invention relates to the field of garden tools and in particular to an improved root cutting shovel.

Background of the Invention 10Applicant is aware of French Patent No. 830,902 which issued to Mercier on August 12, 1938, which patent discloses a shovel blade having serrated tapered edges and in particular tines or teeth formed in the soil engaging end of the shovel blade. The tines or teeth are formed with a depression running 15longitudinally along each tine or tooth. ;

Similarly, United States Patent No. 1,263,949 which issued to Singer on April 23, 1918, United States Patent No.
2,594,598 which issued to Timmins on April 29, 1952, and French 20Patent No. 2,388,472 which issued to Tanguy on December 29, 1978, all disclose shovel blades having teeth or tines formed in the soil engaging end of the shovel blade for cutting roots and the like.

25Each of the prior art instruments above described cut roots by the action of forcing the shovel blade against the roots in a direction substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the shovel handle so as to thereby cut through roots caught between the teeth or tines. The roots are brought against a 30sharpened edge of the shovel blade between the teeth or tines and thereby cut merely by the thrusting force acting on the shovel.

It has been found that the root cutting ability of a shovel blade having teeth or tines extending forward from the 35soil engaging end of the shovel blade or formed therein so as to leave "V" shaped notches between the teeth or tines, may be improved by a shovel blade according to the present invention.

Consequently it is an object of the present invention to provide a shovel blade having teeth extending forward from, or formed in, the soil engaging end of the shovel blade wherein the teeth cutting edges which are twisted longitudinally to provide a shearing cutting action as the twisted cutting edges are forced into cutting engagement with roots.

SummarY of the Invention A root cutting shovel blade has a first concave surface extending between a longitudinally aligned handle shank and a radially spaced apart array of cutting teeth, the cutting teeth spaced apart around a curved edge of the first concave surface opposed to the handle shank. An opposed pair of side edges extends around the first concave surface between the handle shank and the curved edge of the first concave surface opposed to the handle shank. The radially spaced apart array of cutting teeth have stamped thereon a corresponding substantially parallel spaced apart array of longitudinal creases so as to form a corresponding substantially parallel spaced apart array of second concave surfaces on the radially spaced apart array of cutting teeth. The stamping forms one of the second concave surfaces per tooth.

One or more cutting teeth have substantially flat forward tips. The tips are flat in a plane parallel to a plane substantially containing the opposed pair of side edges of the first concave surface, whereby the cutting teeth have cutting edges which are twisted between the flat forward tips and the first concave surface so as to form curvilinear cutting edges for shearing through roots being cut.

Advantageously, each cutting tooth may have an opposed pair of diverging twisted or curvilinear cutting edges extending from the flat forward tip to a point of intersection of the cutting edges with the first concave surface.

21271~28 Brief Description of the Drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of a root cutting shovel blade of the present invention.

Figure 2 is a perspective bottom view of the shovel blade of Figure 1.

Figure 3 is a partial side elevation view of the cutting teeth of the shovel blade of Figure 1.

Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiment Figures 1 and 2 depict a shovel blade having root cutting teeth of the present invention. In particular, shovel blade 10, having shank 12, concave shovel surface 14, has cutting teeth 16. Cutting teeth 16 may be a radially spaced apart array of "V"-shaped cutting teeth around the forward, that is the soil engaging end, of shovel blade 10.
Cutting teeth 16 have formed thereon longitudinal concave creases 18 formed by stamping or like manufacturing method.

Longitudinal concave creases 18 strengthen teeth 16.
By the stamping process by which longitudinal concave creases 18 are formed on teeth 16, cutting edges 20 of teeth 16 are deformed into a twisted curvilinear shape. It has been found that between the forward apex of cutting teeth 16 and the forward end of longitudinal concave creases 18 that the stamping process forms flat tips 22 on the forward ends of cutting teeth 16.

A stamping process which is substantially vertical applied to shovel blade 10 deforms forward tips 22 out of conformal concavity with the concavity of concave surface 14, typically resulting in forward tips 22 being deformed into an orientation substantially parallel with a plane containing concave surface 14 were concave surface 14 flat. Thus what is formed along cutting edges 20 is a curved or twisted cutting edge between forward tips 22 and the intersection of cutting edges between individual cutting teeth 16.

As will be apparent to those skilled in the art in the light of the foregoing disclosure, many alterations and modifica-tions are possible in the practice of this invention without departing from the spirit or scope thereof. Accordingly, the scope of the invention is to be construed in accordance with the substance defined by the following claims.
