Abstract

In the bottling industry, there exists machinery designed to remove bottles from a shipping container such as a cardboard or plastic case. There are two main components to this operation: a machine to support, align and index the case of bottles, and a set of mechanical bottle grippers to remove the bottles by gripping the neck of each bottle. Each bottle gripper removes one bottle at a given time. The grippers are in a fixed alignment with the bottles as they appear in the case. The machine operates the individual grippers through a translating cam which, through linkages, closes or opens the gripper jaws against the neck of the bottle. As the array of grippers is closed on a case of bottles, another mechanism on the machine lifts the grippers and bottles out of the case, usually discharging them onto a conveyor where the bottles proceed to be rinsed and filled.
This invention is a mechanical bottle gripper designed for use on such a machine, that is, it is designed to grip a bottle by the neck in a pair of jaws that can be opened or closed by the action of an external cam.

SPECI~ICATIONS
This i~ "tio~l relates to a device designed to grip the neck of a bottle by means of a pair of moving jaws that are operated through a linear motion in the axis of the bottle, usually by a translating cam.
Existing bottle gtipper designs depffnd on a cam and rocker arm ...~.h~--., integral to the grippff to transfff the linear input motion in the axis of the bottle into a lateral motion opff~ing and closing the jaws onto the neck of a bottle. The intffnal cam and rocker ' provides the motion to both open and close the jaws. The gripper jaws pick up the bottle neck on a pair of parallel lips and can handle bottles with different neck shapes and sizes. This existing design is subject to wear after many cycles. The wear on the internal cam and rocker ~n~ - results in lost motiorl during the opening and closing of the jaws to the point where they no longer grip a bottle s~ .,(ly to remove it from its coritiillcl Sirnilarly, the parallel jaws contact a round bottle at only two points, causing the jaws to wear. This design also allows the bottle to slide along the edges of the jaws which may de-stabilizc the bottle as it is released onto the L~ll~ c COII~ _j~Jl .
This invention ~vc~ eS the above ~ "lliuned shortcomings by ~ "i"A~ the sliding motion of the internal cam and rocker ann "~ .. and the friction and wear s~CCo~jAt~'d with it. The cam is replaced with a slider crank linkage that transfers the input mobon applied by the external cam into the oper~ng motion of the jaws. When the pressure from the cam is released, the jaws are closed by springs in tension. Wear in the linkage components such as bushings or shafls will not significantly affect the jaws' grip on the neck of the bottle since the spnngs provide the tension required to gnp the bottle. AdditionaUy, the lips on the jaws are in the shape of an arc, ill~;l~ing the contact area against a round bottle neck.. l`his reduces the localized ~IC ~ UICS which causes the jaw material to deform and wear, while also preventing the bottle from sliding along the edges of the jaws. This i,ll~ .es the bottle's stability as it is placed on the discl,~ cu"~ ,r. The jaws are attached to the jaw support by a dovetail groove and pin a~ 1 aUowing for the ~ of jaws of different shapes and sizes to A~mm~ At~ different bottle designs. The result is that the gripper's ,liabili~y in removing bottles from cases and l~ r~ g them to the J;~ u~ COIl~ >l is illlplul,e;l when compared to existing gripper designs.
The drawings which illustrate the invention are as follows: Figure 1 is a front elevation of the gripper in the closed position, Figure 2 is a side elevation ;n partial section, Figure 3 is a front elevation in partial section showing the linkages, Figure 4 is a partial section of the gripper jaw sub-assembly in plan, Figure 5 is a front elevation of the gripper jaw sub-assembly in partial section and Flgure 6 is a bottom view of the gripper jaw sub-assembly.
The invention illustrated is sul~pol t~l at Point ~ The guide assembly 2 is held stationary relative to the machine. The jaw sub &s~l.ll/l~ includes the gripper jaw 8 and t~l-occopic jaw support 4, and is coaxial with linlc 3 pivoting about the pin joint at Point B. Pin jointed link 7 pivots about Point C on the sliding plate 1. Extension spring 6 links the two jaw su~ a~ When pressure is applied against the top edge of sliding plate 1, it slides relative to the guide assembly 2. Link 7 rotates about Point C, causing link 3 and the jaw assembly to pivot about point B to the open position. The pivot points C and D of link 7 are arranged so that the linkage cannot lock in the open position. Extension spr;ng 6 returns the jaw assemblies to the closed position when the pressure on sliding plate I is released. In the event that the gripper jaws ~olmt~ an obstruction, the jaw 8 and jaw support 4 can slide axially along link 3. Extension spring 5 will return the jaw assembly to its wrorking position once the obstmction is cleared. The jaw 8 is attached to the jaw support 4 by a dovetail groove and is fastened by a pin 9.

Claims (4)

1: A machine operated device for picking up bottles by means of a pair of jaws using a linear displacement in the axis of the bottle to operate the jaws through a slider crank linkage.
2: A device as defined in claim 1 where the jaws are in the shape of an arc in order to maximize the contact area on a round bottle neck as well as center the bottle within the jaws.
3: A device as defined in claim 1 and 2 where the jaw is attached to the gripper assembly by means of a dovetail groove.
4: A device as defined in claim 1 where a spring under tension between the jaws maintains a positive pressure against the neck of the bottle.
