Abstract

ABSTRACT

An apparatus I call the "Morgan Needle Biopsy Guide" is for use in Medicine, particularly for biopsy of the prostate gland. In recent years Biopsy Guns have been developed which are fast and require less anaesthetic but have a six inch long flexible needle which needs stabilization and guiding to the tissue being biopsied. The "Morgan Needle Biopsy Guide" is made of surgical stainless steel in two parts welded together. The first part is a slim tube than can accommodate the biopsy needle, with a slight curvature to fit the relaxed index finger.
The second part is cut of malleable stainless steel, and has two nearly complete rings that go around the near and far end of the index finger like a sleeve. They provide stability to the "Guide" and can be bent to fit snugly on different diameter fingers. This piece also has a "spine" portion which runs the length of the index finger and onto the palm of the hand where it widens out to provide a guard to protect the users hand from the needle. The palm end has a shoulder which the Guns fit up to, ensuring the needle is at appropriate length.

DIS~LOSURE

This product has been designed in response to the increasing incidence of prostate cancer found in our aging population and for the increased awareness of that disease in the public which has created higher demand for prostate biopsies. New biopsy guns producing less trauma and discomfort to the patient are now on the market, but improved guides to direct these biopsies have not been developed.
The "Morgan Needle Biopsy Guide" is made of surgical stainless steel with welded construction and can be sterilized by "gassing", "soaking"
or "flashing techniques.
The base plate is cut out of 25/1000 thickness, Atlas type 301, 3/4 hard temper stainless steel, so that the finger rings remain malleable and can be bent to fit the users finger diameter. The main plate is cut out to the dimensions in the diagram attached (true scale). The edges are then deburred as necessary. Using dies, the finger rings are formed into incomplete circles, the heel is bent at right angles to accommodate the thickness of the gun body when positioned in the user's hand, and then the length is gently curved to fit a relaxed finger.
The second piece is made of Atlas type 304 stainless steel tubing with 1/8" outer diameter and 28/1000 wall thickness. The gun end i9 slightly flared to ease insertion of a needle. The length is gently curved to match the base plate, and the two pieces are finely welded together with the tube protruding about Smm. beyond the end of the base plate.
It is worn on the user's index finger (right or left) as in the attached freehand drawing, with a rubber glove pulled overtop. The glove is pun~tured to insert the needle through the guide channel.

Claims (6)

1) A stronger construction than previous biopsy guides is achieved by welding the guide tube onto a corrugated spine piece, making the unit more durable.
2) The unit has two finger rings which are malleable surgical stainless steel. This keeps the unit in line with the index finger so guidance is guaranteed and the rings can be spread or tightened to fit different finger widths.
3) The palm end has been broadened out to create a three centimeter guard plate which helps prevent accidental puncture of the user's hand by the biopsy needle.
4) The palm end of the unit has a one centimeter dropped shoulder which allows the gun to be positioned against the unit end, thereby having the needle tip exactly at the end of the guide tube.
5) The widened palm end of the unit can be easily grasped, allowing the user to pull it back, exposing the index finger tip beyond the guide unit so as to palpate the biopsy site unhindered. The guide unit can then be slid forward along the index finger to place the needle tip directly against the tissue to be biopsied.
6) The good stabilization of the gun loaded biopsy needle using this unit will allow other sites such as vaginal or subcutaneous masses to be biopsied.
