Abstract

ABSTRACT

A conventional axe is normally used for splitting wood.
Axe handles break when the axe head drives into the wood and the handle pivots down and impacts on the rim as the log.
After one or more such impacts, the handle snaps at a point about 1 to 3 inches (25mm to 75mm) below the axe head.
This invention redesigns the axe head by incorporating a projection below the usual axe head to shield the area which breaks.

Description

SPECIFICATION

This invention relates to known tools for splitting or cutting woad.
By using an axe For splitting wood, it is important to hit the wood block exactly with a correct hit.
Because of its long handle an axe is an unusual and dangerous tool. In order not to hit their legs or feet many axe operators will aim and hit the wood block too far in the middle.
The result is, the axe head can only be driven so Far into the wood block until the handle hits on the edge of the log, causing the handle to break at that point, located about 1 to 3 inches beloY~ the axe head.
Besides losing money for new axe handles, the breakage o~ an axe handle creates the possibility for potential accidents.
This invention will protect the breakage point of an axe handle.
The protection is part of the axe head and will cover an area From about 4 inches ~100mm) below the axe head.
The extra weight for the pro~ection on the axe head will make wood splitting easier.
It will make wood splitting safer and saves a respectable amount of money.

shows a conventional axe with the breaking point on the axe handle.

Figure # 2 shows the redesigned axe head with the handle protection.

Fipure # 3 shows an overhead view of a correct hit ~left) and a wrong hit ~right).

Figure # 4 shows a side view ~cross section) of a wrong hit without a handle protection.
The drawing shows, an axe head can only sink in the wood block until the axe handle hits the rim of the log.

Figure # ~
shows also a side view ~cross section) of a wrong hit, but with a handle protection.
~y sinking the axe head in the wood block, the axe handle is protected and cannot be damaged.
The axe head can actually be driven deeper in the wood block, because the handle protection has the same shape as the axe head and acts as an axe head extension.
