Abstract
Abstract Plant and Bird Feeder Stand This invention relates to a support stand for plant baskets and bird feeders.
Description
Background of the invention.
For the purpose of attracting birds it is common practice to hang a bird feeder close to your house and try to protect it from hungry squirrels. Alqo, for the purpoqe of beautifying small areas, hanging plant baskets are used.
An object of thi~ invention i~ to provide a ~tand with ~quirrel guard for the hanging of two or more separate bird feeders. A further objective is to provide a graceful means for hanging plant baRkets and in addition~the support of a bird bath con3iqting of the qame squirrel guard mentioned above. A further purpose of thiA invention i~ to provide an easily moveable stand to facilitate these functions.
~rief Summary A pole and arm assembly has been developed for support-ing plant baskets and bird feederq having unique character-istics of grace and beauty combined with light weight and functionality. The3e functions are assisted by an attach-ment which serves as both a squirrel deflector and a bird bath.
. ' Purpose It i8 known that various forms of birdfeeders have been , ., .:
. . : .. . : - .: : : . , ; , 2~7378 made having a vertical shaft and a ~hort horizontal arm attached to the top end of the shaft.
It is also known that various forms of squirrel guards are in use having vertical or sloping surfaces.
It is the purpose of this invention to provide a decor-ative, light, easily moveable stand for hanging plant baskets or bird feeders. A further purpose of this inven-tion is to provide a single attachment to act both as a squirrel guard and bird bath. A further purpose of this invention is to provide a form of construction that may be easily moved about an area.
Brief Description ' FIG 1 is a frontal elevation of the stand.
FIG 2 is an isometric view of an enlarged joint of the end of the vertical tube and the two semi circular arms.
~` FIG 3 i~ a side elevation of the flattened end of one of the semi-circular arms.
~! FIG 4 i9 an isometric view of the squirrel guard- bird ,; bath attachment.
FIG 5 is an isometric view of an elarged joint contain-ing the ends of three semi-circular arms.
FIG 6 is a cro~s section at the joint of a triple arm and shaft assembly.
.;
~ FIG 7 is a cross section of the tubular shaft.

item 1 FIGS 1 and 5 held vertically by an inside peg 16 at one end driven into the ground 15 and supporting holding arms 3 at the opposite or top end of the shaft to which may be attached the required flower pots or bird feeders. The said holding arms 3 also formed from round steel tube are attached to the shaft by means of forcing a short straight portion at one end of each arm item 9 FIG 2 and 5 into a shaped pocket formed at one end of the shaft, item 2 FIG 1 and FIG 2 and securing the side of the arms by small welds item 4 FIG 2 to the top edge of the said pocket the said pocket being formed to fit tightly around the end of the group of the said holding arms. The holding arms are also supported by a cross brace 5 and welds 6. This assembly thus forms a structural triangle at the junction of the shaft and arms which is braced by cantilever action of the ends of the joined components. The holding arms 3 consist of a curved portion, at one end of each having a flattened portion item 7 FIG 3, a hole, item 8, and, a short straight portion item 9 shown in FIGS 1, 2 and 5, in broken lines.
The bird-bath squirrel-deflector attachment FIG 4 is a metal pan formed with a sloping outer edge item 10, a central hole, around which a ~hort length of tube or collar, item 11, is welded to form a water tight saucer. The said attachment i~ shown in the squirrel deflector mode item 12 FIG l~and the bird bath mode item 13 FIG 1 obtained by turn-ing the pan over and fastening it along the tubular shaft by a set screw 14 FIG 4 threaded through the wall of the said collar 11.

Advantageq ubular construction of the stand with its inherrent properties of rigidity, lightnesq in weight and ea~e of manufacture is greatly facilitated by the proposed methods of construction. The closure of the pinched ends of the holding arms and the tight fitting of the inside circumfer-ence at the top of the shaft helps to prevent water from entering the inqides of the tubes. The closing of the tube ends also greatly facilitates the dip method of painting.
The method of joining the arms to the end enlargement of the tube shaft results in a simple, strong connection of the ends of the components, usually rigid enough to render the end welds item 4 structurally unnecessary. The rever-sible bird bath and squirrel deflector provides a dual purpose for the attachment. The method of mounting the stand shaft over an inside metal peg provides for conven-`~r ient movement of the stand and facilitates reversing of the ~ bird-bath, squirrel deflector piece.
