Abstract

HAIR CURLING COMB

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A comb for waving the hair has a comb back and a row of teeth projecting from the comb back in the usual way. At least a portion of each tooth is V-shaped in profile and the V-shaped teeth are nested so that as the comb is drawn through the hair, hairs are deflected across two edges of one tooth and the apex of an adjacent tooth. This action on the hair produce waves in the hair.

HAIR CURLXNG COMB

The present invention relates to a comb and more particularly to a comb for mechanically imparting waves to hair.
Chemical formulations and heat are often used for producing waves or curls in human hair for aesthetic reasons.
These techniques are time consuming and costly. The wisdom of using these techniques has been questioned for both ecological and health reasons.
The present invention aims at the provision of an alternative hair waving mechanism.
It is known that when a straight hair is drawn over a sharp edge, the hair may develop a curl. It is believed that this involves a change in the cross sectional shape of the hair and the stretching of the hair on the side away from the edge. The present invention is intended to employ this effect to produce a mechanical waving of the hair.
According to the present invention there is provided a comb comprising a back and a row of teeth projecting from the back, with at least a portion of each tooth having a V-shaped profile, the V-shaped teeth being nested to provide a non-linear path between each pair of adjacent teeth whereby a hair passing through the comb is deflected over two edges of one tooth and the apex of an adjacent tooth.
The included angle of the V-shaped tooth portion, the - 2~5~0~

sharpness of the tooth edges and the apex, and the degree of nestlng wi].l all have an ef f ect on the treatment applied to the hair. Consequently, a range of combs may be used for hair of different properties or to produce varying intensities of waving.
It is presently preferred that only the centre half of the tooth length has a V-shaped profile, the remainder of the tooth being flattened or having a rounded shape like that of a conventional comb tooth.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate an exemplary embodiment of the present invention:
Figure 1 is an isometric representation of a comb according to the present invention;
Figure 2 is a cross section along line 2-2 of Figure l;
Figure 3 is a side elevation of a tooth; and Figure 4 is a front elevation of a tooth.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, there is illustrated a comb 10 with a back or spine 12 and two end teeth 14 projecting from the back. A row of teeth 16 pro~eGts from the back between the end teeth 14. Each tooth 16 has an upper section 18 that is flat in profile and a lower section 20 that is likewise flat in profile an~ has a rounded free end 21. The ~entre section 22 of the tooth has a wide "v" or chevron shape profile. This section of the tooth has an apex 24 and two side edges 26.

As illustrated most particul~rly in Figure 2, the teeth are nested into one another so that the passage between each pair of adjacent teeth is V-shaped. As the comb is drawn through the hair, a hair 28 will contact the two edges 26 of one tooth and the apex 24 of the adjacent tooth so that the hair is deflected into a broad V-configurationO The arrangement may be such that the included angle of the deflected hair is approximately 130.
It has been found that combing the hair with a comb of this sort on a continuos basis will develop a wave in the hair that is very natural in its appearance.
While one embodiment of the present invention has been described in the foregoing, it is to be understood that other embodiments are possible within the scope of the invention and are intended to be included within the scope of the application. The invention is to be considered limited solely by the scope of the appended claims.

Claims (5)

1. A comb comprising a back and a row of teeth projecting from the back, with at least a portion of each tooth having a V-shaped profile, the V-shaped teeth being nested to provide a non-linear path between each pair of adjacent teeth whereby a hair passing through the comb is deflected over two edges of one tooth and the apex of an adjacent tooth.
2. A comb according to claim 1 wherein the centre portion of each tooth has a V-shaped profile.
3. A comb according to claim 2 wherein the centre portion of each tooth has a length substantially equal to the one-half of the tooth length.
4. A comb according to claim 3 wherein each tooth has inner and outer end portions, each with a length substantially equal to one-quarter of the total tooth length.
5. A comb according to any preceding claim wherein the teeth are integral with the back.
