Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A push button switch has an electrical contact module, an enlarged halo for retaining a switch actuator and a legend plate, and a halo adapter for attaching the halo to the electrical contact module. The halo and the halo adapter define a housing for the switch actuator which actuator has legs extending through the halo adapter for engaging a spring biased contact carrier in the electrical contact module. The contact carrier pushes the switch actuator against a first protection formed on the halo. An actuating force applied to a lens cap of the actuator overcomes the bias of the contact barrier causing the switch actuator to travel inside the housing and come to rest against a wall of the halo adapter to prevent excess pressure on the carrier.

PUSH BUTTON SWITCH WITH LENS CAP

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
5The present in~ention relates generally to push button switches and, in particular, to a modular push button switch with a lens cap.
A push button asse~bly havin~ a switch actuator subassembly is shown in U.S. Patent No. 4,742,198. A face plate includes a single opening for each push button assembly. The push button assembly includes a halo which interfaces the assembly with the face plate, snugly extending into the face plate opening. A halo adapter interfaces the halo with an electrical switch which is actuatable via axial movement of a contact carrier. The halo and halo adapter nest to cooperatively define a housing for a switch actuator, eliminating the need for special tooling. The halo and halo adapter define first and second axial travel limits for the I switch actuator, with the electrical switch biasing the ! :! 20 switch actuator to the first travel limit. The switch actuator includes an actuating portion which is completed by a lens. The lens is suitably fixed to the actuating portion such as by ultrasonic welding. In illuminated embodiments, the actuating portion and the lens are translucent to transmit light to indicate to the user that the button has ' been actuated, e.g., that an elevator call has been registered when the push button assembly is used in an ~'l ele~ator application.
.J The main disad~antage of this prior art push button assembly is that the lens is fixed to the actuating portion.
- To fix the lens permanently to the actuating portion means additional manufacturing labor. Another disadvantage is that once manufactured there is no way to combine different lenses and buttons to comply with requlrements for variations in $dentifying legends,shapes and/or colors.

- SUMMARY OF THE INV~NTION
The present invention concerns a modular push button swltch enabling an economical and simple production of the push button components. The swltch includes an electrical contact module, an enlarged halo for retaining a switch actuator and a legend plate, and a halo adapter interfacing the halo with the electrical contact module. The halo and the halo adapter deflne a housing for the switch actuator which actuator actuates via an axial movement a contact carrier of the electrical contact module.
The switch actuator has a lens cap with lens slidably positioned on an actuating portion of a base portion. When . an actuating force is appl$ed to the lens cap, the actuating - portion and the base portion are axially moved in said 15 housing to engage the contact carrier. The halo adapter has a wall for engaging the base portion to prevent the `~ application of excess pressure on the contact carrier. The lens and the actuating portion can be formed in different colors and the actuating portion is adapted to rec~ive `. 20 legends.
; Thus, the push button assembly described above provides easy assembly as well as easy disassembly from the back of a ` push button face plate, in order to replace damaged : components and/or to change component colors, identifying ; 25 legend plates and the like. An advantage attained by the invention is that there is only one type of actuatlng portion and lens necessary to quickly and easily assemble push buttons wlth dlfferent legends and colors without the use of * special tools.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRE~ F,MBODIMENT
As shown in the Figs. 1 through 3, a push button switch according to the present invention includes an electrical contact module 1, a halo adapter 2, a switch actuator 3 and an enlarged halo 4. The electrical contact module 1, the halo adapter 2 and the enlarged halo 4 are described in . 15 detail in U.S. Patent No. 4,504,713 and in the document US-A-4 742 198.
A face plate 5 has an opening 5.1 formed therein snd a fastener means 5.2, such as threaded studs, fixed to and extending from an inner surface for securing the push button ;; 20 switch. The opening 5.1 has a substantially rectangular configuration with the opposed shorter sides being - Isemicircular. Th~ halo 4 and the halo adapter 2 are . constructed to nest snugly together to form a switch actuator housing within which the switch actuator 3 is disposed in a , 25 snug but axially slidable guided relaeionship relati~e to the halo elements.
, The halo 4 ineludes a generally planar flange 4.1 having a first projection 4.2 and a second pro~ction 4.3 extending from opposite planar surfaces and surrounding a push button opening 4.5. The first pro~ection 4.2 h~s a substantially square configuration with rounded corners and is configured ~ to snugly extend into the halo adapter 6 to form a housing '~for the switch aetuator 3. The seeond pro~eetion 4.3 is configured to snugly extend into the openlng 5.~ ln the face plate. The depth of the second pro~eetion 4.3 is at least equal to the thiekness of the faee plate 5. contact module 1, the halo ad~pter 2 and the enlarged halo 4 each have mounting ears, 1.1, 2.1 and 4.4 respectively, with fastener means receiving openings which are aligned with the fastener mesns 5.~. To the left of the push button opening 4.5, as seen in Flg. l, the second pro~ection 4.3 has a recess 4.6 formed therein for receiving a legend plate 4.7 which fits snugly into the recess 4.6. Sui~able fastener means, not shown, are provided for securing the legend plate 4.7 via a legend plate opening 4.8 for~ed in the recess 4.6 The switch actuator housing portion of the halo adapter 2 is formed by a recess 2.2 having a square configurstion with rounded corners and by a back wall 2.3. The wall 2.3 I has formed therein ad~acent each of the side walls of the recess 2.2 a generally rectangular openlng 2.4 for enabling ! 15 the actuating function of the push button. : The switch actuator 3 or push button includes a - generally planar base portion 3.1 having actuating legs 3.2 20 extending from a surface facing the halo adapter 2 and a generally cylindrical actuating portion 3.3 facing the halo 4. The actuating legs 3.2 extend outwardly from the base portion 3.1 and through associated ones of the rectangular openings 2.4 to engage a spring biased contact carrier 1.3.
A cylindrlcal lens cap 3.4 is snugly but slidably positioned ~ over the actuating portion 3.3. On the end facing the halo, : ' a lens 3.5, configured to the end surface, completes the lens ~ cap 3.4. The lens 3.5 can be flst as shown or can be curved.
; The lens cap 3.4 is dimensioned to slidably enter the push button opening 4.5 in the halo 4. The lens 3.5 transmits the indicating light of the lamp 1.2 to the user. An annular collar 3.6 surrounds the open end of the lens cap 3.4.
Although the lens cap 3.4, the lens 3.5 and the collar 3.6 have a round configuratlon, the teachings of the invention apply equally to ~lternative configurations, such as square.

Fig. 3 shows the switch of Fig.l nsse~bled and lnstalled in a face plate. The switch actuator 3 is disposed in ths switch actuator hous$ng for~ed by the hnlo ad~pter 2 and the enlarged halo 4. ~hen assembled, the actuating legs 3.2 engage the spring blased contact carr$er 1.3 and the contact carrier 1.3 thus pushes the switch actuator 3 against the first pro~ection 4.2 of the halo 4, whereby the collar 3.6 of the lens cap 3.4 is presse~ ~gainst the first pro;ection 4.2 by the base port~on 3.1. An actuating force applied to the outer surface of the lens 3.5 overcomes the bias of the ;contact csrrier 1.3 causing the switch actuator 3 to travel a predetermined distance inside the switch actuator housing.
The switch actuator 3 comes to rest as soon as the base portion 3.1 reaches the wall 2.3 of the halo adapter 2, i5 preventing an excess pressure on the contact carrier 1.3.
The outer surface of the top of the actuating portion 3.3 is flat so that legends can be printed, hot stamped or engraved on it. The lens cap 3.4 is transparent and is positioned over the actuating portion 3.3 to protect the legends. All the plastic components of the push button switch can be molded using polycarbonate in different colors. Thus, the ! ~
lens 3.5 and the actuating portion 3.3 can be clear or colored or any combination thereof.
^ In sum~ary, the push button switch according to the ¦25 present invention includes an electrical contact module 1 having a contact carrier 1.3, a modular switch actuator 3 .~ J¦having an indicating module coupled to an actuating module, an enlarged halo 4 having means for retaining the switch actuator and a legend plate, and a halo adapter 2 for ~30 attaching the enlarged halo to the electrical contact module ; to form a housing for the switch actuator. When pressure is applied to the indicating module, the switch actuator moves axially in the housing to engage the contact carrier. The indicating module includes a lens cap 3.4 having a visible portion with a lens 3.5 for ~ransmitting indicating light to a user of the switch. positloned over an actuatLng portion 3.3 extending outwardly from a base portion 3.1 of the actuating module.
In accordance with the provisions o the patent statutes, the present invention has been described ln what is considered to represent lts preferred embodiment. However, it should be noted that the invention can be practiced otherwise than as specifically illustrated and described ` without departing from its spirit or scope.

Claims (20)

1. A push button switch comprising:
an electrical contact module having a contact carrier;
a modular switch actuator having an indicating module coupled to an actuating module;
an enlarged halo having means for retaining said switch actuator and a legend plate; and a halo adapter for attaching said enlarged halo with said electrical contact module to form a housing for said switch actuator whereby said switch actuator actuates via an axial movement in said housing said contact carrier.
2. The push button switch according to claim 1 wherein said indicating module is a lens cap snugly but slidably positioned over an actuating portion extending outwardly from a base portion of said actuating module.
3. The push button switch according to claim 1 wherein said indicating module includes a lens cap having a visible portion with a lens for transmitting indicating light to a user of the push button switch.
4. The push button switch according to claim 1 wherein said indicating module is a lens cap having an opening surrounded by a collar for transmitting an actuating force applied to said lens cap to said actuating module.
5. The push button switch according to claim 1 wherein said actuating module includes a flat surface adapted to receive legends.
6. The push button switch according to claim 1 wherein said indicating module and an associated actuating portion of said actuating module each have a round configuration.
7. The push button switch according to claim 1 wherein said indicating module and an associated actuating portion of said actuating module each have a square configuration.
8. The push button switch according to claim 1 wherein said indicating and actuating modules are formed from a colored material.
9. The push button switch according to claim 1 wherein said indicating module includes a lens cap having a visible portion with a lens for transmitting indicating light to a user of the push button switch, said lens cap having a curved outer surface.
10. A push button switch comprising:
an electrical contact module having a contact carrier;
a switch actuator having a lens cap slidably coupled to a base portion;
an enlarged halo having means for retaining said switch actuator and a legend plate; and a halo adapter for attaching said enlarged halo with said electrical contact module to form a housing for said switch actuator whereby said switch actuator actuates via an axial movement in said housing said contact carrier.
11. The push button switch according to claim 10 wherein said lens cap is snugly but slidably positioned over an actuating portion extending outwardly from said base portion.
12. The push button switch according to claim 10 wherein a visible portion of said lens cap has a lens for transmitting indicating light to a user of the push button switch.
13. The push button switch according to claim 12 wherein said lens is formed with a curved outer surface.
14. The push button switch according to claim 10 wherein said lens cap has an open end surrounded by a collar for transmitting an actuating force applied to said lens cap to said base portion.
15. The push button switch according to claim 10 including an actuating portion extending outwardly from said base portion and having a flat surface adapted to receive legends.
16. The push button switch according to claim 10 wherein said lens cap and an actuating portion of said base portion each have a cylindrical configuration.
17. The push button switch according to claim 10 wherein said lens cap and an actuating portion of said base portion each have a square configuration.
18. The push button switch according to claim 10 wherein said lens cap and an actuating portion of said base portion each are formed from a colored material.
19. A push button switch comprising:
an electrical contact module having a contact carrier;
a switch actuator having a lens cap slidably positioned on an actuating portion of a base portion;
an enlarged halo having openings formed therein for retaining said switch actuator and a legend plate; and a halo adapter for attaching said enlarged halo to said electrical contact module to form a housing for said switch actuator whereby when an actuating force is applied to said lens cap, said actuating portion and said base portion are axially moved in said housing to engage said contact carrier.
20. The push button switch according to claim 19 wherein said halo adapter has a wall for engaging said base portion to prevent the application of excess pressure on said contact carrier.
