Abstract

ABSTRACT.-CHAIRLIFT OR GONDOLALIFT WITH DIRECT POWER TAKE-OFF.

In the station of a detachable chairlift or gondolalift the chairs are driven on a transfer rail by a chain or a belt which passes on a wheel (21) rigidly and axially coupled with the return pulley (11). The chairs run at a constant speed in syn-chronism with the cable.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The invention relates to an overhead carrier-hauling cable transport installation, said cable extending in a closed loop along the line between two stations and to which cars running ;
between the two stations are suspended by coupling grips, said installations comprising a return pulley with a vertical axis, on which said cable passes in the station, a disengagement device of the cars at the entrance to the station, an engage- `
ment device of the cars at the exit from the station, a trans- ~-fer rail extending in the station to guide the cars detached from the cable from the entrance to the exit, passing on load-ing and/or unloading platforms, said rail in the shape of a half-loop passing round said pulley and, a chain or a belt extending along said transfer rail and supporting car driving means. `

In the prior art installations of the kind mentioned, the chain or belt, named thereafter chain, is driven by a separate motor or by a power take-off on the cable or on the axis of the return pulley. The separate motor requires a power supply in the station and control means to synchronize the speed of the chain and the speed of the cable.

The power take-off on the cable or on the return pulley provides automatically the synchronization, but the power transmission system comprises complicated reductors and mechanical devices. ~ - -SUMMARY_OF THE INVENTION -The object of the present invention is to achieve a simplified drive system for the cars in the station. According to the in-vention the transport installation comprises a drive wheel co-axially and rigidly coupled to said return pulley and said chain or belt in the shape of an endless loop comprises a drive sec~
tion extending along the rail and a transmission section pass-ing on said whee.l so that the wheel drives the chain or belt at a reduced speed corresponding t~o the relation between the dia~ ~ ~

The chain drives the cars along the transfer rail and at the same time takes off the power from the wheel coupled to the return pulley and transmits this power. The chain speed is slower than the cable speed and this speed reduction is auto-matically obtained by the reduced wheel diameter, which is how-ever great enough to drive directly the chain or the belt. The ;

The change of the chain speed is achieved by changing the wheel or by having a wheel the diameter of which may be changed. The invention ca be advantageously applied to a detachable chairlift ``
or a gondola llft, having a transfer rail passing behind and near the pulley wherein the position of the rail with respect to the pulley is fixed; The pulley and the rail may be both fixed or both supported by a mobile carriage for keeping the tension of the cable constant. It should be noted that the in- `~-vention can be applied to conventional installations with a movable pulley and a fixed rail, if the chain is equipped with a tension device for compensating the spacing variations between pulley and rail.

The constant speed drive section is advantageously located in the curved rail section behind the pulley and the chain extends inside the curved rail and returns around the wheel foreside.
The drive fingers of the chain protrude outside and they do not hinder the passage of the chain round the wheel.The chain works as a power transmission belt and may be used as power supply for other equipments of the station, particularly for driving the cars on other sections, for instance on deceleration or acceleration sections. The speed is automatically reduced and the power can be taken-off, for instance on one of the chain guide sheaves.

The constant speed rail section is well suited to a rhythm device which maintains constant the car spacing. This section is equipped with a second drive mode with another speed and this second drive device may be driven by the chain through a gearbox. Such a rhythm device i5 for instance disclosed in the US Patent No. 4,627,361.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
In the figures, an overhead carrier-hauling cable 10 of a chair-lift, which could be a gondola lift, runs in the station on a return pulley 11 with a vertical axis. The chairs or cabins, `
named chairs 12 hereafter, are attached to the cable 10 by grips 13 having rollers for running on a transfer rail 14 which passes round and behind the pulley 11. At the entrance to the station a fixed disengagement ramp 30 uncouples the grips 13 from the cable 10 and the chairs 12 run along the transfer rail 14 which passes in a half loop round the pulley 11 towards the station exit where they are recoupled to the cable. At the entrance the chairs 12 are braked by a train of tired wheels 15, located at intervals along the rail 14 and at the e~it they are accelerated in a similar way by tired wheels 15. The deceleration and the acceleration can be operated by other drive systems or by the chair weight.

According to the present invention, the chair 12 transfer cir~
cuit in the station, constituted by the rail 14, comprises a constant speed section 16 which for instance in the embodiment shown in figure 1 extends in half-loop round the pulley 11. This section 16 is equipped with a chair drive chain 17 or belt, named hereafter chain. The chain 17 supports drive fingers 18 which cooperate with the grip 13 to drive the chairs 12 on the rail 14. The chain 17 is guided by vertical-axis sheaves 19 4 2~33~7 located at intervals insides the half-loop. The chain 17 return section 20 passes round a wheel 21 which is coaxially rigidly coupled to the pulley 11 and this return section works as a transmission belt: The diame~ter of the wheel 21 is a frac-tion of the pulley diameter and i:he speed o~ the chain 17 is thus reduced with respect to the cable speed. The chain speed may be changed by selecting the adapted wheel 21 or by varyina the diameter of this wheel.
.' Referring to figure 2, it can be seen that the chain 17 drives ~ ~-the acceleration and deceleration tired wheels 15. The power is taken-off by the last guiding sheave 19 at the end of the con-stGnt speed section 16. This sheave 1~ drives the tired wheels 15 through intermediate mechanisms 22 and transmissions 23. The tired wheels 15 at the opposite side can be driven in the same manner by taking-off the power on a guiding sheave 19 or in the manner shown in figure 2, by a mechanical link 24 with the oppo-site tired wheels 15. This link 24 may comprise ~n additio-nal derivation 25 for driving other equipments of the station.
The chain 17 may of course extend further for instance on straight sections along the platforms. The constant speed sec-tion 16 may include a rhythm device having for instance a second car drive device (not shown) at a different speed. The second drive device can be a second chain or tired wheels driven by the chain 17 particularly by the power take-off points 19, 22.

The installation works in the usual way and it can be seen that the cable 10 drives the return sheave 11 and therewith the coupled wheel 21 and the chain 17 passing on this wheel 21. All ! "~

In figure 1, the return pulley 11 and the rail 14 ore both fixed and the cable tension is provided in the opposite station. In figure 2, the return ~ulley 11 and the rail 14 are both supported by a mobile carriage 25 slidably mounted on rollers 27 borne by a pillor 28. A jack or a counter-weight biases the carriage in the opposite direction from the line to keep the cable 10 t a u t , but the position of the pulley 11 with respect to the rail 14 remains fixed. Such an installation is disclosed in - - 2~336 ~ 7 ': ' the copending patent application entitled "Tension terminal station of a coble transport installation" and the drive ys-te~ according to the invention is well suited for such an `
installation.

In conventional installations where the interval between pulley and rail i5 nat const0nt, a chain 17 tension device may be used .~

Claims (8)

1. Overhead carrier-hauling cable transport installation, said cable extending in a closed loop along the line between two stations and to which cars running between the two stations are suspended by coupling grips, said installations comprising a return pulley with a vertical axis, on which said cable passes in the station, a disengagement device of the cars at the en-trance to the station, an engagement device of the cars at the exit from the station, a transfer rail extending in the station to guide the cars detached from the cable from the entrance to the exit, passing on loading and/or unloading platforms, said rail in the shape of a half-loop passing round said pulley and, a chain or a belt extending along said transfer rail and sup-porting car driving means, a drive wheel coaxially and rigidly coupled to said return pulley, and wherein said chain or belt in the shape of an endless loop comprises a drive section extending along the rail and a transmission section passing on said wheel so that the wheel drives the chain or belt at a reduced speed corresponding to the relation between the diame-ters of the wheel and of the pulley.
2. Installation according to claim 1, wherein said transfer rail comprises a section with constant car speed, said chain or belt extending along said constant speed section for driving the cars at a constant speed in synchronism with the speed of the cable.
3. Installation according to claim 2, wherein said constant speed section passes round behind the return pulley and said drive section of the chain or belt extends insides said section and wherein said transmission section of the chain passes round the frontside of the wheel.
4. Installation according to claim 1, comprising equipments of the station and a power take-off sheave whereon passes said chain or belt for driving said equipments.
5. Installation according to claim 4, comprising a car accele-ration device at the station exit driven by said power take-off sheave located at the end of the driving section, said sheave being deviced to guide the chain towards the wheel.
6. Installation according to claim 1, wherein the position of said transfer rail with respect to the return sheave is constant.
7. Installation according to claim 7, comprising a tension car-riage which supports the return wheel and the transfer rail with the chain or belt.
8. Installation according to claim 2, wherein said constant speed section of the transfer rail is deviced as rhythm device for maintaining the car intervals constant.
