Abstract

A retractable cover for the box of a pick-up truck, that totally or partially covers and locks the box. The cover can be manually rolled up on itself or folded on itself from either end, either from the front or the rear of the box, and it is supported by the two parallel side walls of the box. The cover is made of a flexible sheet material and spaced cross ribs. Two tracks attached to the top of the two parallel side walls will fix the cover in place, each track will have a gutter to drain water out and independent articulated flap members; each flap can be pivoted over the cover and will be fixed in place by locks provided on the track. A simple system allows the tail gate to be locked (or not locked) at the same time as the cover. When the cover is retracted or partly spread, two elastics will maintain the roll in place. A soft shell covers the roll for protection when resting on the track. A
removable vertical crosswise divider creates a safe compartment while the cover is half open, the divider mating with slot guides provided on the inside walls of the box.

Description

_ 3 _ 20314~0 Disclosure The present invention relates to a pick-up truck accessory used for totally or partially covering the box; more specifically it is a system to fix and lock an articulated cover.
Many systems exist today for covering pick-up truck boxes from the elements. The most common form consists of waterproof tarpaulins manually fixed by snaps, Velcro, or straps etc. Such canvas covers are difficult to install, they do not function if partially open, they are difficult to store, they do not support the weight of a snowfall or an accumulation of water, and they offer little or no theft protection.
Other complicated systems made of metallic articulated covers and sliding rails, with rotating axle, spring, motor are impressive but their cost of maintenance and manufacturing are high.
I have discovered a way to combine: simplicity, speed, security and weather proofing, by mixing an articulated cover with a flap locking system. In comparison with the other systems, the ribs of the new cover protect the box against theft, it gives quick access to the box from both extremities, the system permits the formation of two compartments, one locked and waterproof and the other covered or open.
The present invention, a system to fix and lock an articulated (or rigid) cover, includes:
two tracks to be attached to an upper surface of the two side walls of the truck box, each of them include a pad, a gutter, positioning blocks, articulated flap members and locks.
an articulated cover, composed of a flexible sheet attached to a series of rigid ribs that are ~ ~ 4 ~ 2031410 interconnected by strips; the tracks support the articulated cover by the extremity of the ribs;
elastics with adjustable tension to immobilize the roll that form the cover in its retracted or semi retracted position;
a soft shell with elastic to cover and protect the roll when not in use;
a moveable divider that vertically fits inside the box; it offers a safe compartment when the box is partially open;
removable pins that attach to the top of the tail gate. These allow the tailgate to be locked or free at the same time as the cover;
a locking cable to lock the front of the cover to the front of the box, when the cover is not locked by the flap members;
a rigid solid cover that can replace the articulated cover, to cover part of the box formed by the divider, it adapts to the tracks and can be locked by the flap members, it operates by horizontally sliding on the tracks.
With reference to the drawings illustrating the embodiment of the present invention,-Figure 1 shows a rear view of a truck providedwith the cover closed and locked by the track flap members.
Figure 2 shows a truck with the cover partially rolled up and the divider forming a safe compartment.
Figure 3 shows the same truck showing the cover completely rolled up, and covered by the storage shell.
Figure 4 is a side view of the front of the cover (excluding the track) with the locking system for the cover in the front of the box.

Figure 8 shows a perspective view of a rear left corner of the truck box provided with a track and a tail gate pin screwed on top of the tail gate.
Figure 9 is a side view of a truck with a partially retracted cover.
Figure 10 shows a solid cover locked in the tracks and covering the part of the box formed by the vrtical divider panel.
As shown in the appended Figures, a pick-up truck (10) has a box (15). The box has a bottom (16), a tail gate (13) and sides walls (12) (it could also be a different container other than the box of a pick-up truck).
The invention consists of a system to fix and lock an articulated cover (25), which can be lengthened or retracted while resting on two tracks (35) fixed on the two side walls (12) of the box for totally or partially covering the box. The cover can be manually rolled on itself or folded from both extremities (front or rear).
Two tracks (35) (Figs. 7, 8 and 9) are attached on top of both side walls (12) by screws (38), for supporting and positioning the cover. Each track has a horizontal part (34) with a width similar to the thickness of the side of the cover and a vertical part (36) having substantially the same height as the thickness of the cover. To secure the last rib of the ~ .~.

` - 6 - 2031410 cover, the vertical part of the track closes the rear of track (30).
A pad (33) for receiving and supporting the cover, covers some of the horizontal parts (34) of each track and a gutter (32) between the pad and the vertical part of track, allows water to drain out by the draining holes (31). The gutter does not allow water to reach the front or rear ends of the tracks where the locks are, so they stay relatively dry and clean.
Four cover positioning blocks (39), located near the ends of the tracks position the cover so it always occupies the same place on the track. They are also used to lift the tarp (25) to stop water and dirt from reaching the locks. These blocks are fixed on the horizontal part of the tracks in front of the locks (45), and also protect the locks against impact.
The ribbed cover (Figs. 4, 5 and 6) offers a wide variety of movements; it can be rolled or folded on itself like a carpet on a floor. The cover is placed on the tracks and fits over the positioning blocks (39) with the space between the ribs (29) at the four corners. To position the cover, gently pull it at one end so that the two blocks at the pulled ends are covered by the spaces between the ribs at the pulled end. When the cover is retracted, it takes shape of a roll (19) that rests on the tracks (Fig.
2). The roll stays in place by elastics (5). In its complete retracted position, a shell with elastics (9) covers the roll for protection and for storage (Fig. 3).
The articulated cover includes a series of rigid tubes or bars (24) closed by caps (22) at their ends.
The length of the ribs is such that they rest on the b ` - 7 - 2 0 3 141~

two parallel sides of the box inside the tracks. The ribs are parallelly attached by strips (26) (e.g.:
three strips over the ribs and three under). Rivets can be used to join the ribs and the tarp, the spaces between the ribs may vary.
The tarp (25) is fixed (glued) to the upper rib strip and covers all the ribs. While under the cover three other strips (27) are glued to the three strips (26) over the rivets, limiting abrasion of the tarp by the rivets. Before assembling these new bottom strips, thin steel wires (28) are placed to prevent break-ins by a possible knife attack. Over the tarp, protection pieces (23) are glued at the junction of ribs and strips to prevent abrasion of the tarp.
At the rear end of the cover, the tarp vertically descends (20) to slightly cover the tail gate, this extension is also used as a handle to pull and place the cover over the positioning blocks. The tarp's front end follows a downward path horizontally.
The locking system includes four articulated flap members (48) fixed by hinges (37) to the top of the vertical wall of the track; the flap members can be locked over the cover by locks (45) fixed to the tracks. The flap members can be used to lock the forward half of the cover, the rear half of cover or the entire cover.
The flap member (rigid tubing) (48) with ~imen~ions corresponding approximately to the vertical part of the track (36), rests parallel to the outside vertical part of the track when not in use, they are immobilized to the track by pieces of Velcro (49). Each flap member includes a slot (44) to receive the cam hook of the corresponding lock.

- 8 - 2 0 3 1~10 The four locks (45) are fixed to the vertical part of the tracks (36) in front of the positioning blocks (39), a small block (47) fixed to the track solidifies the locks. The lock allows the movement of the cam hook (46) to move from a 9 o'clock to a 12 o'clock position. The key can only be removed at either of these two positions.
To lock or unlock a flap member, press on the flap in order to compress the cover and liberate the cam hook.
Slots (30) are provided to allow the cam hook (46) to reach through to the slot (44) of the corresponding flap member.
To hold the roll (19) in place when the cover is retracted or partially retracted, two elastics (5) cover the ends of the roll (19) and attach to holes (4), provided on the vertical part of the track (inside face) by hooks (3). These elastics can be tightened (6) to immobilize the roll no matter what its diameter may be. To prevent the elastics from falling off the roll, a strap (7) with a hook is loosely attached to the elastic, the hook fits into a hole (8) in one of the ribs.
To allow the tail-gate to be locked at the same time as the cover, two removable pins (40) can be screwed to receiving plates (41) fixed on the top of tail-gate (13) near the tracks. Under the last ribs of cover (rear end), two holes (42) match the pins (40) and the holes fit over the pins when the cover is closed. The pins (40) are removable so the driver has the choice of having a locked or unlocked tail gate when cover is closed.
The removable divider (55) forms a secure compartment at the front or at the rear of the box leaving the other compartment to be used as desired by the owner. Many slot guides (54) attached vertically to the side wall (12) of the box allow the divider to be placed at different positions, when not in use; it can rest against the front wall of the box. Once in position, the divider is secured in place when the cover is locked over it.
Since the flaps are not always necessarility locked over the cover, or when the cover is rolled up, a cable padlock system (50) is provided to prevent theft. This cable locking system is attached from the first rib of the cover to a ring (51) found in most trucks.
A rigid cover (60) (Fig. 10) can fit in the tracks (35) to cover the compartment of the box defined by the divider (55). To gain access to the compartment, the rigid cover (60) is lifted from the positioning blocks (39) and the rigid cover is slid horizontally on the tracks.
It must be understood that the shape and dimensions o~ the drawings and diagrams do not limit the scope of the invention, some details not being essential to the understanding of this invention have been intentionally omitted. The embodiments of this invention, in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed, are applied to truck covers, but can equally be applied to other fields requiring this type of covering system.
