Description

- 1 - 2ol2s2o C~SE 37~5 BEyE~A~ PAC~a~E~

T~e present invention relate~ to beverage packages and, in particular, to sealed beverage package~ which are formed from a substantially air-and water-impermeable material and which contain one or more ingredients for the preparation of beverages.
The production of freshly brewed tea or coffee involves contacting tea leaves or roast and ground coffee with hot water and separating the beverage from the tea leave~ or coffee ground~. Varlous methods for the production of freahly brewed coffee or tea are well known. For example, tea i~ prepared traditionally in a teapot, the tea leave~ being immer~ed in boiling water and allowed to stand before being poured from the pot. Freshly brewed coffee may be prepared by the continuous passage of hot water through roast and ground coffee contained in a filter and the coffeQ collected in a jug or other receptacle, or by percolation which involve~ the continuous recycling of water through the roast and ground coffee.
It has previously been propo~ed to seal fresh roast and ground coffee or tea leaves in individual air-impermeabl- packages. For example, cartridges or capsules containing compacted ground coffee are known for u~- in cQrtain coffee making machines wh$ch are generally t~rmed "e~pres~o" mach~n~s. In th-production o~ coffee u~ing theae coffe~ mach$ne- the coffee cartridg- i~ placed in a brewing chamber and hot water i9 genorally caused to pass under pre~ur-through the cartr$dge, tbereby extracting the aromatic coffee con~t$tuents-from the ground coffe~
and producing a coffee beverag~.
Cartri,d~es containing roast and ground coffee in which hot water flows under gravi~etric forc- througb - 2 - 20~2520 th~ cartridg~ are also known A cartridge of this general type is described in British Patent No In our European Patent Application No 87311325 2 there i5 described a package which contains at least one beverage preparation ingredient e g roast and ground cof~ee In a preferred embodiment the package is formed from a substantially air-and water-impermeable material and comprise~ a sealed body portion having a compartment containing the beverage insrediQnt and outlet means designed so that the beverage produced, in use, is filt~red thereby avoiding the necessity ~or an external ~ilter There i~ al~o doscribed in Application No 87311325 2, a method for preparing a beverage which comprises positioning a beverage containing package at a brewing station, introducing water through water introduction means into the package, allowing the water to commingl~ with the beverage ingredient, and collecting the beverage so-formed through an outlet formed in the pac~age The beverag- packages and cartridges a~ described abov- qenerally hav- an ar~a which is adapted, when in U8-, to ~orm an outlet for the beverage from the packag- The outlet of the package or cartridge may be design~d to bo opened, in use, by tho user for exampl-, by m-ans of tear strings, tear ~trips or peelable tabs Alternatively, the package of cartridge may bc d~igned for uso with a machine in which th~ outlet of th~ package is opened automatically by cutting or piercing a material covering the outl~t opening Th~ outle~ formed automatic~lly in pack~g-~ and cartridg~s a~ described above by means of a machinQ
cutting or piercing the mat~rial having the outlet opening su~cr~ from thR di~advantage that th-_ 3 _ 20125zo beverage tends to eputter and splash from the outlat.
In our co-pending Briti~h Patent Application No.
8806667 we de~cribed a beveraqe package with a sealed outlet having a counterbore in which the piercing action of the cutting or piercing tool folds inwardly the material surroundinq tha opening formed by the tool whereby the material lies within the counterbore of the outlet.
We have now developed a beverage pac~age with a different outlet arrangement in which the outlet has a trough ad;acent the outlet, and the piercing action o~ the tool ~olds th0 material covering the outlet into the trough thereby moving the material out of the path o~ the beverage which emerge~ through the outlet.
Accordingly, the present invention provide3 a sealed beverage package containing one or more beverage preparation ingrQdients and being formed from ~ubstantially air- and water-impermeable materials, the said package having an outlet nozzle for~ed therein which is surrounded by a wall onto which is sealed an air- and wat-r-impermeable materlal covering the outlet nozzle, ths beverage package having a trough ~ormed between the outlet nozzlQ and at least a part of the said surrounding wall, the ~aid trough being adapted to receive therein the air- and water-impermeable material covering the outlet nozzle when, in u8e of the packAge to prepare a beverage, th- said material covering the outlet nozzle i~ partially cut around thQ nozzle to ~orm a ~lap and the ~lap folde~ away fro~ the outlet nozzle during the formation of an outlet in th~ ~aid pac~age.
The outlet nozzle o~ th- beverage packag- i~
preferably Covared by a rupturabl- air- and watsr-imper~e~ble ~aterial which ha~ appropriate dead~old _ 4 _ 2012520 characteristic~ ~o that on cutting the material around and folding the material away from the outlet nozzle the material will remain folded in the trough adjacent the outlet nozzle. Appropriate materials are aluminium foil or a laminated matQrial. Specific examplQs of materials which can be used are aluminium foil having a thickness in the range from 30 to 60 micrometres coated with a layer of polypropylene or a polypropylene/vinyl lacquer.
The beverage package~ of the present invention may contain, for example, leaf tea or roast and ground coffee a~ the beverage preparation ingredient. A beverage is prepared from the beverage package by ~eans of a brewing machine and the outlet to tho package is formed in the beverage package during the brewing cycle.
The wall which surrounds the outlet nozzle and onto which the air- and water-impermeable matsrial is sealed may be of any de~ired con~iguration, although it is preferred that the wall should be square, rectangular or circular. The air- and water-impermeable material should bo sealed tautly to the said surrounding wall so that the material can bo cut cleanly and efficiently by a cutting tool during the formation of the outlet in the beverage package.
Preferably a single cutting tool both cuts the air-and water-impQrmeable material around the outlet nozzle and fold~ the cut flap portion $nto th- trough ad~acent the outlet nozzle. The piercing or cutting tool should be de~igned ~o that it doe~ not complet-ly cut the air- and water imp rm able material around the outlet nozzle ~ince in ~uch circum~tances the cut material would fall into the consumers cup.
It wil~ be under~tood that the trough ad~acent to the outlet nozzle should be of a depth ~uffici-nt to receive therein the air- and water-impermeable material covering the outlQt nozzle when it is ~olded away from the outlet nozzle Aceordingly, the dept~
B of the trough is related to the width of the flap o~ material partially cut around the outlet nozzle by the cutting tool such that 2B is greater than these or equal to the width of the said flap A The trough preferably surround~ the outlet nozzle The wall which surround~ the outlet nozzle and onto which the air- and water-impermeable material is sealed is pre~erably either at the same level a~ th~
outlet nozzle, or stands slightly proud o~ the outlet nozzle so that the outlet nozzle does not inadverently damage the air- and water-imp-rmoabl-material which covers th- nozzle and which i8 8ealed to the said wall The present invention will bo further deseribed with referenc~ to the accompany~ng drawings, in which Figure 1 is a schematie view o~ the underneath o~
a capsule aeeording to the invention;

A~ shown in Figure 3, the outlet in the capsule i8 opened by a cutting tool 7 which iB of generally tubular con~truction. The cutting tool 7 i~ mounted on a platen or the like which is not ~hown in the drawings. The cutting tool 7 comprises an open ended cylinder of D cross-section having dimensions larger than the external dimension~ of outlet nozzle 2. me arcuate portion 8 of the upper end of the tool 7 i8 sQrrated to pierce and eventually to cut foil 5, without removing any foil. ~he straight bar portion 9 o~ the tool is cut back longitudinally of the cylinder at least to the base of the teeth of the serrated portion to fold or pull the cut foil away from outlet aperture 4 before the coffee is dispensed therethrough. The cutting tool 7 pierces the beverage package 1 extQrnally of th- outlet nozzle 2 as it i8 raised by means not shown. The cutting tool rests in trough 6. The cutting tool 7 opens the outlet apertur- in the bevQrage package by piercing and eventually cutting the foil 5 and fold~ng it back into the trough 6. Thereby both the cut material and the cutting tool 7 are held out of the path of the beverage to be di~pen~ed through the outlet nozzle 2.
