Abstract
ABSTRACT
A practice goaltender apparatus consists of a plastic shell shaped in contour and low relief to resemble a goaltender for a sport such as ice hockey.
The shell is suspended in the mouth of a goal by an elastic suspension in the form of "bungee" cords.

Description
PRACTICE GOALTENDER FIGURE FOR HOCKEY
This application relateg to sports equi~ment and more partlcul~arly to a practlce goaltending apparatus for such sports as ice hockey.
Various devices have been proposed in the past to provide ice hockey players with a realistic target for shooting practice. These include various devices with silhouettes formed to resemble that of a goaltender, thus allowing a player to practice shooting at the open areas of the goal.
The aim of the present invention is to provide an improved apparatus of this type.
According to the present invention there is provided a practice goaltending apparatus for ice hockey or the like comp, rising a shell shaped to represent a figure of ~ goaltender; elastic suspension means secured B~to the~ s5héll at spaced positions thereon for suspending the shell from a goal frame.
The suspension of the simulated goaltender in the mouth of the goal with an elastic suspension, for example elastic cords provide a desirable shock-absorbing action. Movement of the goaltender in response to impact with a puck gives the goaltender a "live" or active ,,' '~

In preferred embodiments of the invention, the shell i9 a sheet of hlgh denslty polyethylene moulded to provlde a three-dlmenslonal configuratlon that glves a realistic appearance and causes pro~ectlles such as pucks impacting on the figure to rebound in various different dlrectlons, thus further improving the realism of the simulation.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate an exemplary embodiment of the present invention.

The goaltending apparatus 10 includes a shell 20 formed of a sheet of hlgh density polyethlene shaped : to present the silhouette and to at least some extent, a low rellef three-dimensional representation of a life-.. . .

The shell is suspended in the mouth of the goal by two elastic cords, for example "bungee" cords, 22, one of which passes behind the shell ln the vlcinity of the shoulders and through openings 40 in the front panel 24.
The other elastic cord passes behlnd the lower legs and the stick to extend through openings 42 in front panel 84. The ends of the cords are fastened to the rectan-gular frame 14 of the goal by hooks 44. In other embodi-ments, four separate cords may be used, knotted behind the shell to secure the cords to the shell, two ad;acent the shoulders and two adjacent the lower legs.
The shell has a front panel 24 with different areas lying in different planes to provide the low relief effect. Thus, the gloves 28 and stick 29 of the simula-tion are raised with respect to the pads 30 and upper torso 32. The lower torso 34 is depressed relative to the upper torso 32. The face mask 36 is raised relative to the ad~acent upper torso. A peripheral flange 28 surrounds the shell to provide the required rigidity.
The hooks are adjustably connected to the hooks so that the goaltender can be mounted in goals of different slzes. The position of t-he goaltender can be adjusted to any location within the mouth of the goal.

~0.~4 With the shell 20 suspended ln the net as illustrated there are certain o~en areas o~ the goal mouth, notably at the corners and between the legs Or the goaltender that a player may attempt to hlt wlth a shot.
In the event that a shot misses and strikes the shell 20, the elastic cords 22 will provide some shock resistance to the shell. The shell deflection, plus the use of a contoured shell, provides considerable realism to the rebounds coming off the shell. The goaltending apparatus may be sufficiently light in weight so that it can be manipulated by a slngle child.
One embodlment of the present invention has been described in the foregoing, but it is to be under-stood that other embodlments are possible within the scope of this invention. For example, the illustrated embodiment is an ice hockey goaltender. The invention is, however, applicable to other types of sports and may, for example, be used to represent a lacrosse or field hockey goaltender. The apparatus may be used on ice, grass, pavement or any other playing surface, indoors or out. While the embodiment described herein is made of hlgh density polyethylene, it is also possible to use high density polyurethane or any other material that is sufficiently rigid. It is therefore to be understood " , ~
