Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE

A device for the sealed joining of two pipes with smooth cylindrical ends having a sealing sleeve which can be tightened by a clamping ring. On its outside edge areas, the sealing sleeve has packing washers as well as an annular flange in the middle, serving as a stop for the pipe ends which are to be joined. To produce other sealing areas on each side of the middle flange adjacent to the sealing areas which are produced by packing washers during tightening of the sealing sleeve, the inside wall sections of the sealing sleeve, which each extend between each side of the flange and the innermost packing washer, are at an angle of inclination of only twenty degrees (20°) at the most relative to the lengthwise axis of the device and are chamfered radially outwardly.

Description

1~Z921~1 DEVICE TO BE USED FOR SEALED JOINING OF
TWO PIPES WITH SMOOTH CYLINDRICAL ENDS

Background of the Invention The present invention relates to a device to be used for the sealed joining of two pipes with smooth cylindrical ends, with a sealing sleeve which can be tightened by a clamping ring, which on its inside periphery has an annular flange in the middle, projecting radially inwardly as a stop for the pipe ends which are being joined, and has annular washers on its outside edge areas, and inside wall sectlons which are chamfered radially outwardly and extend from both sides of the middle flange.
In known devices of this type, the pipes to ~e introduced are joined exclusively by annular packing washers, which has been proven in practice to be inadequate. In such known devices, the danger also exists that with the clamping of the clamping ring by the relatively thick outward chamfered inside wall section of the sealing sleeve (the angle of inclination of this inside wall section to the extended main axis is wider than 45 degrees) there is an axially outward thrust force on the pipe ends, which particularly with relatively narrow sealing sle~ves has proven to be very disadvantageous.
The holding force exerted on both pipe ends by the tightened sealing sleeve may then indeed prove insufficient.

Summary of the Invention The object of the invention is a further development of a device of the above type to form additional sealing areas and so that the pipe ends to be introduced are better held in the axial direction.

~k - ~9Z86~

This is attained according to the present invention in that, for the construction of additional annular sealing areas adjacent to each side of the middle flange, the radially outwardly chamfered inside wall section~ each have an angle of inclination with the extended lengthwise axis of the device of twenty degrees (20) at the most. When the sealing sleeve is tightened, it is thus advantageous that the introduced pipe ends are joined by the pressure of the inside wall sections along a relatively long axial length, not only in the area of the packing washers, but also on both sides of the middle flange, whereupon the axial holding of the pipe ends introduced into the sealing sleeve is also greatly improved relative to the state of the art. It can thus also be advantageous to reduce the width of the sealing sleeve, which then leads to economy based on savings of material.
It is especially to be noted that both additional sealing areas are effective independent of the packing washers.
The sealing function of these additional sealing areas is still retained when the pipe ends are not configured exactly perpen-dicular to the pipe axis, but run oblique to the axis. Finally, the slight inclination of both inside wall sections on both sides of the middle flange is guaranteed, so that during tightening of~the sealint] sleeve these can exert no outward thrust force on the pipe end~, as is the case in the prior art devices.
Another advantage of the invention resides in that during the introduction into the sealing sleeve the pipe ends are guided quite well by the slightly chamfered inside wall sections. Thus, if the sealing sleeve is not tight, the pipe ends each come to lie in the corner between the flange and the chamfered inside wall section or offset slightly radially inward from this corner. Possible variations in the dimensions of the pipes to be joined can be simply compensated by tightening of the clamping ring.

- lZ9'~861 Tests have shown that the preferred angle of incli-nation of the inside wall sections relative to the lengthwise axis is fifteen degrees (15) plus ~r minus one degree (1).
If, according to another configuration of the invention, the radially outward chamfered inside wall sections each extend from the middle flange to the innermost packing washer, the advantageous possibility exists that the axial length of the additional annular sealing areas can be enlarged by suitable greater tightening of the sealing sleeve.
The invention will be explained in greater detail hereinafter relative to the drawing of one exemplary embodiment, which shows:
Fig. 1 is a cross sectional view of a sealing sleeve constructed according to the present invention; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged partial cross sectional view of the sealing sleeve shown in Fig. 1, tightened by a clamping ring fitted onto the smooth cylindrical ends of two pipes.
In Fig. 2, 1 and 2 are the smooth cylindrical ends of two pipes with substantially identical outside and inside diameters which are to be joined. As an illustrative example, these pipes 1, 2 can be waste water pipes made of steel or cast iron. The joining device 3 which has a sealing sleeve 4 o elastomeric material as well as a clamping ring 5, for tightening sealing sleeve 4, iB adapted for the sealing o the two pipes 1, 2.
Clamping ring S, preerably o thin super-refined steel plate, for this purpose is provided with two radially outwardly projecting turned-over edges ~not shown), which can be drawn one against the other in a known manner by means of screws (not shown) or the like, in order to decrease the inside diameter of the clamping ring. These parts of clamping ring 5 are not shown in the drawing because they are known.

`` - 12928~il Sealing sleeve 4, surrounded by clamping ring 5, on the inside of both outside edge areas has two annular packing washers 6, 7 and one annular flange 8, which is arranged in the middle, projecting radially inwardly which serves as a stop for both pipe ends 9, 10 which are to be joined. An inside wall section 11, which is chamfered radially outwardly, extends between each side of flange 8 and each innermost packing washer 7.
The angle of inclination alpha (~ ) of this inside wall section 11 relative to the lengthwise axis 12 of device 3 in the exemplary embodiment preferably is fifteen degrees (15) plus or minus one degree (1).
During introduction of smooth cylindrical pipe ends 1, 2 into the device 3 or sealing sleeve 4, packing washers 6, 7 bent inward and oblique inside wall section 11 serve as guides for the pipe ends, until pipe ends 9, 10 contact annular flange 8.
Sealing sleeve 4 with reference to the diminishing outside diameter of pipes 1, 2 is of such dimensions that pipe ends 9, 10 either come directly into the corners 14 (Fig. 1) or come to lie somewhat radially inwardly ofEset from these corners 14.
It is understood that sealing sleeve 4 is in a loose state in this phase of assembly.
To produce the sealed pipe jOillt, clamping ring 5 is drawn together peripherally by means o the screws ~not shown) and thus sealing sleeve 4 i9 tlghtened radially inwardly. Packing washèrs 6, 7 are thus pressed against the outside periphery of pipes 1, 2, whereupon two first sealing areas A (Fig. 2) are produced. Because of the smooth angle of inclination alpha (~ ) of the inside wall sections 11, another annular zone 13 of this inside wall section 11 is also pressed against the outside periphery of pipes 1, 2 adjacent to ends 9, 10, whereupon two second annular sealing areas B (Fig. 2) are produced on each side of middle flange 8. The axial lengths of the sealing areas B depend upon the degree of tightening of sealing sleeve 4 and can therefore be adjusted within certain limitations.
