Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
An article of footwear for travel over snow has a snow blade with front and rear support platforms spaced apart longitudinally of the snow blade for supporting front and rear portions, respectively, of the user's foot.
The front and rear support platforms are secured to the snow blade so as to be movable towards and away from one another in response to flexure of the snow blade to facilitate walking by the user.

Description

44~L

The present invention relates to an article of footwear for travel over snow.
The two types of footwear commonly employed at the present time for that purpose are skis and snowshoes.
Skis have the disadvantage that they have a very long length. Consequently, not only are they bulky and therefore awkward to transport to and from the locations at which they are to be used but, also, it is very awkward, if not impossible, for the wearers of skis to walk without removing the skis.
Similar disadvantages apply, although perhaps to a lesser extent, with respect to the awkward size of snowshoes, which are also heavy and tiring to use.
It is accord~ngly an object of the present invention to provide a novel and improved arti~le of footwear for travel over snow which facilitates wal~ing by the wearer.
According to the present invention, there is provided an article of footwear for travel over snow, comprising, a snow blade, means on the snow blade for supporting the foot of a user of the article, the support means comprising front and rear support platforms spaced apart longitudinally of the snow blade for supporting front and rear portions, respectively, of the user's foot, and means for securing the front and rear support platforms to the snow blade so as to be movable towards and away from one another in response to flexure of -the snow blade to facilitate walking by the user.
Preferably, the securing means comprise means for fixedly securiny a rear portion of the rear support platform to the blade and a front portion of the platform to a front portion of the snow blade and means for slidably supporting a front portion of the rear support platform and a rear portion of the front support platform on the snow blade.
The slidable support means may comprise means for slidably interconnecting the front and rear support platforms, such slidable interconnection means comprising 2~4~

a tongue fixed relative to one of the platforms and proiecting through a slot fixed relative to the other of the platforms, the tongue being movable longitudinally of the snow blade in re~ponse to flexure of the snow blade.
The invention will be more readi 1y understo~d from the following descr7Rtion of a preferred embodiment thereof which is given, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:-Figure 1 shows a view of side elevation of an article of footwear accordi~g to one embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 shows a plan view of the article of Fi~ure 1; and Figure 3 shows a view taken to cross-section along the line III-III of Figure 2.
The article of footwear illustrated in the drawings has a snow blade indicated generally by reference numeral 10, which is formed of an elongate horizontal generally flat strip or plate of metal bent to form a forwardly upwardly inclined and convergently tapered tip portion indicated generally by reference numeral 11, a rear portion indicated generally by reference numeral 12 and having an upwardly and rearwardly inclinea edge 14, and downwardly and laterally outwardly inclined longitudinal marginal edge portions 15, which provide improved lateral grippiny of snow during use of the article.
Upon the snow blade 10 there are mounted a front support platform indicated generally by reference numeral 17 and a rear support platform indicated generally by reference numeral 18.
The front support platform 17 is formed of sheet metal and has a ~enerally horizontal top 20, which is sp~eed upwardly from the snow blade 10 and partially overlies the tip portion 11, front and rear transverse wall portions 21 and 22 extending downwardly from the top 20, and an upwardly and forwardly inclined front portion 23 extending from the lower edge of the front wall 22.

32a~4~

The front portion 23 is secured to the tip portion 11 of the snow blade 10 in a fixed manner by means of rivets Z4, which also secure to the underside of the tip portion 11 a pic plate 25 having, at its front edge a downwardly bent wall 26 forming a pic means to f~cilitate engagement with ice or hard packed snow when the user tilts his foot downwardly from the heel and depresses his foot onto the ice or snow.
The rear wall portion 21 of the front support platform 17 rests on the upper surface of the skate b].ade 10 but i5 not fixed thereto.
The rear support platform 18, also of sheet metal, has a top 30 formed with front and rear downwardIy extending walls 31 and 32, which extend transversely of the snow blade 10 and elevate the top 30 of the snow blade 10 at substantially the same height as the top 20 of the front support platform 17.
The rear wall 31 has a horizontal flange 34 secured by rivets 36 to the rear end portion 12 of the snow blade 10.
The front wall 32 extends to a slide plate 38, which is generally horizontal and which slidably rests on the upper surface of the snow blade 10. The front end of the slide plate 38 has a vertically upwardly extending end wall 40, from which a horizontal tongue portion 42 proiects forwardly through a horizontal slot 44 in ~he rear wall 21 of the front support platform 17. The tongue 42 is slidable to and fro, longitudlnally of the snow blade 10, through the slot 44 upon flexure of the snow blade 10, such as occurs when the user of the article is walking and raises his heel while pressing the front support platform 17 downwardly with his toes. Thus, the front and rear support platforms 17 and i8 can move slightly toward~ and away from one another during such flexure of the snow blade 10 to facilita~e the fle~ure and, thus, to facilitate the walking action of the user.
The front and rear support platforms 17 and 18 3L2~244~1 are strengthened by means of longitudinal reinforcement ribs 46 and 4B.
A heel cup 50 for receiving the heel of the user's shoe or boot is provided with a heel strap 52 and is secured by means of a mounting bracket 54 on a slide plate indicated generally by reference numeral 56.
The slide plate 56 has a flat top 58 resting on the upper surface of a top 30 of the rear support platform la and a pair of depending side walls 60, which extend downwardly past the opposite longitudinal edges of the top 30 of the rear support platform 18. A screw 62 extends downwardly through a circular hole (not shown~ in the slide plate top 5B and through a longitudinal 510t 64 formed in the top 30 of the rear support platform 18, into threaded engagement with a clamp member 66 at the underside of the rear support platform top 30, so that the heel cup 50 can be adjustably and releasably secured in position along the rear support platform 18.
~ pair of toe clips 70 carried by the front support platform 17 and provided with toe straps 72 and 73 are adjustably secured to laterally upwardly projecting portions 76 of the front support platform top 20 by means of adjustment screws ~8 extending through circular holes (not shown) in the top portions 76 and through adjustment slots 80 in the toe clips 70 into threaded engagement with clamp members 82 beneath the toe clips 70.
As will be apparent from the drawings, the snow blade 10 and, indeed, the entire article of footwear has a length which is very substantially less than that of a conventional ski, and the present article is therefore relatively compact and light and, consequently, easy to accommodate in lug~age, transport vehicles, etc and to carry and wear.
Since the front and rear support platforms 1~
and 18 can move relative to one another, due to the sliding of the slide plate 38 on the upper surface of the snow blade 10 and the sliding of the tongu.e 42 to an fro through the slot 44, the flexing of the snow blade 10 1~ 4~1 during walking is facilitated in the above-described manner .
During such walking, the front wall 26 of the pic plate 24 facilitates gripping o~ s~ow or ice in a manner which wi-l be f~miliar to user~ of ice skates provided with pics.
