ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE

A bar bending machine comprising a support table provided with a static anvil, and adapted to be bench mounted or leg mounted, a pair of spaced-apart cheeks projecting from the support table and carrying pivot means in the vicinity of the static anvil, the pivot means pivotally supporting a bifurcated end of a swingable lever arm carrying a bending element located in spaced apart relationship from the static anvil, whereby a bar to be bent is engageable between the bending element and the static anvil, with the table also carrying clamping means to clamp the bar to be bent to the static anvil.

Description

-1- iZ44330 Thia lnvention relates to a bending machine for applying bends to generally elongate materlal nf flat bar ~ection, rectangular sectlon, round section etc., referred to hereinafter as a bar bending machine.
Known bar bending machines are of a bench mounted klnd, in contrast to a portable klnd, the former lncorporating a mounting plate by which the machine is secured by ~crews or bolt~toa bench surface althoughlt ls frequently de~lrable however. for bar bending to be effected "on siten. in much the same manner ag the known, relatively light duty. portable pipe bendlng machines frequently used by pipe fitters. plumbers etc.
The ob~ect of the present invention is to provide a bar bending machine that primarily may be of a portable kind, but alternatively may be readily adapted for bench-mounting.
According to the present invention, there is provided a bar bending machine comprisin~ a ~upport table provided with a static anvil, and adapted to be mounted , ~. ~

Thus, with the devlce ln accordance wlth the inventlon, in accordance wlth the requirements of the user and/or the nature of the bar to be bent, the machine is operated by firstly inserting a bar to be bent between the cheeks, and then operating the clamping means to clamp the bar to the static anvil, ~lth the ~wingable lever then rotated from a bar-accommodating position to and through a barbending position whereby a desired angular bend is imparted to the bar by the bending element around an edge of the static anvil.
It follows that in general, the selected spacing between the cheeks dictates the maximum bar width that the machine can s ~

Preferably, in its portable mode, the ma-chine in accordance with the invention is provided withat lea~t first and second ground-en~ageable legs attached to a ~tand to whlch the support table is releasably attachable. e.g. bY screw means, It is al~o preferred that at least one of the le~s is pivotable wlth respect to the stand. 80 that the pivotable leg(s) may be displaced to a folded condition for machlne transport and an unfolded condition for machine use. Preferably, the pivotable leg(s) ls latchable ln elther selected position by means of a retalnlng pln.

Preferably, for conversion to bench mounting, the stand ls removed snd the support table is releasably attached, e.g. by screw means, to a bench. Preferably, for such adaptability the support table ls provided with ~ultable formations. e.g. through holes, to receive bench/atand mounting studs. bolts, screws etc.
Preferably, the pivot means of the support table comprises a pivot pin carried by the cheeks, and conveniently the lever arm $s removable from its plvotal connection to the ., . ~

-" 124~330 support table. e.g. by retainln~ the lever arm by spring cllps engaglng clrcumferential grooves in axially dlsplaceable pivot pin~, Preferably, in order that the machine can readily accommodate bars of varying dimen-sions, the bending element is m~unted so as to be positionally ad~ustable with respect to the lever arm. Preferably , posltional adjustment may be effected by a screw devlce and the latter may be used for total adjustment or merely for fine adjustment. Preferably, in the latter case, additional means are provided to effect coarse adJustment, e.g. bv providing a plurallty of ~electable holes axlally spaced along the lever arm, with a removable pln e.g.
retalned by a sprlng clip, engageable in a selectable hole. In any event. lt ls preferred to mount the bendlng element to the lever arm by means of a pln to provide for a quick release action, which ls advantageous for the insertion and removal of bar if many repeat bends are required. The bendlng element preferably has a curved, bar-en~aglng surface.

Preferably, the clamping means is attached to a portion of the static anvil.

124~330 Preferably, such attachment may be by means of a removable pin engaging aligned holes. In detail, the clamping means is prelerably of inverted "U"-shape comprising a pair of spaced-apart, parallel side walls and an interconnecting cross wall, and incorporates a screw-adjustable clampin~ pad located opposite a surface of the static anvil to clamp the bar against that surface. Preferably, tightening of the clamping means is effected by providing a through hole ln the screw component for engagement by a tommy-bar which ls preferably retained agaln~t lo~s by means of an attachment chain, as ~s the pin by which the clamping means is secured to the anvil.
Preferably, the static anvil comprises a planar. upper surface, normallY intended to be horlzontal, or generally ~o, which surface terminates at one end in a bending edge around which the bar is bent by the bendlng element, Preferably, the bending edge is provlded as a curved edge on a replaceable, wear resistant pad.
One embod~iment of bar bendin~ device in accordance with the invention will now be described in greater detail, by way of ,~,~,.

In the drawings, a bar bending machine 1 comprises a support table 2 provided with a static anvil 3 having a planar, upper surface 4 nor~ally intended to be horizontal, which surface 4 terminates at one edge in a wear-resistant insert pad 5 having a curved bending edge 6. A clamping means 7 is attached to the anvil 3 by means of a removable pin 8 passing through aligned holes 9, the pin 8 being secured against loss by being attached to the support table 2 by a chain 10. The clamping means 7 is generally of inverted "U"-shape, comprising a pair of spaced-apart, parallel side walls 11 and an interconnecting, cross wall 12, and also comprising a clamping pad 13 which is positionally adjustable with respect to the upper surface 4 by means of a screw component 14 having a head 15 with a hole 16 through which a tommy-bar 17 may be passed, for adjustment purposes, loss of the tommy-bar 17 being prevented by an attachment chain 18.
Also attached to the support table 2 and welded to the static anvil 3 are a pair of spaced-apart cheeks 19, which carry a pivot pin 20 for a bifurcated end 21 of a swingable, lever arm 22 carrying a bending element 23 located in spaced-apart relationship from the static anvil 3. The bending element 23 is positionally adjustable with respect to the lever arm 22 by being mounted on a lower end of a spindle 24 which is externally screw-threaded and screwed into a correspondingly screw-threaded hole of a component 25 secured to the bifucated end 21 by means of a removable pin 26, the spindle 24 having a hand wheel 27 by which positional adjustment of the bending element 23 may be effected.
The support table 2 is provided with a plurality of formations, exemplified as three holes 28 by which it may be secured either to a bench (not shown), or to a stand 29 iZ44330 dependent on the requirement of the user and/or the nature of the material to be bent.
The stand 29 comprises a baseplate 30 carrying at least two ground-engageable legs 31 pivotally attached to the baseplate 30, so that the stand may be folded for transport.
In use, the clamping means 7 is opened to permit a bar 32 to be inserted between the clamping pad 13 and the upper surface 4 of the static anvil 3, the bar 32 being advanced into the machine 1 until the location where a bend is required in the bar 32 is in the vicinity of the bending edge 6 of the wear-resistant pad 5. The position of the bending element 23 i5 then adjusted until it is in contact with the adjacent upper surface of the bar 32 and the lever arm 22 is then rotated by the user in an anti-clockwise direction, as indicated by the arrow 33 in Figure 3, to effect bending about the bending edge 6, with the lever arm 22 then returned to the upright position indicated in Figure 3, the clamping means 7 released, and the bent bar 32 removed from the machine 1.

Claims (30)

The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:
1. A bar bending machine comprising a support table provided with a static anvil, and adapted to be mounted, a pair of spaced-apart cheeks projecting from the support table and carrying pivot means in the vicinity of the static anvil, the pivot means pivotally supporting a bifurcated end of a swingable lever arm carrying a bending element located in spaced apart relationship from the static anvil, whereby a bar to be bent is engageable between the bending element and the static anvil, with the table also carrying clamping means to clamp the bar to be bent to the static anvil.
2. A machine as claimed in claim 1, provided with at least first and second ground-engageable legs attached to a stand to which the support table is releasably at-tachable.
3. A machine as claimed in claim 2, wherein at least one of the legs is pivotable with respect to the stand, so that the pivotable leg(s) may be displaced to a folded condition for machine transport and an unfolded condition for machine use.
4. A machine as claimed in claim 3, wherein the pivotable leg(s) is latchable in either selected position by means of a retaining pin.
5. A machine as claimed in claim 1, wherein the support table is provided with suitable formations for adaptability as to bench mounting.
6. A machine as claimed in claim 5, wherein the formations are through holes to receive bench mounting studs, bolts, and screws.
7. A machine as claimed in claim 1, wherein the support table is provided with suitable formations for adaptability as to stand mounting.
8. A machine as claimed in claim 7, wherein the formations are through holes to receive stand mounting studs, bolts, and screws.
9. A machine as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the pivot means of the support table com-prises a pivot pin carried by the cheeks.
10. A machine as claimed in claim 1, wherein the lever arm is removable from its piv-otal connection to the support table.
11. A machine as claimed in claim 10, wherein the lever arm is retained by spring clips engaging circum-ferential grooves in axially displaceable pivot pins.
12. A machine as claimed in claim 1, wherein the bending element is mounted so as to be positionally adjustable with respect to the lever arm.
13. A machine as claimed in claim 12, wherein positional adjustment is effected by a screw device.
14. A machine as claimed in claim 13, wherein the screw device serves for total adjustment.
15. A machine as claimed in claim 13, wherein the screw device serves for fine adjustment, with addi-tional means provided to effect coarse adjustment.
16. A machine as claimed in claim 15, wherein the additional means comprises a plurality of selectable holes axially spaced along the lever arm, with a removable pin engageable in a selectable hole.
17. A machine as claimed in claim 16, wherein the removable pin is retained by a spring clip.
18. A machine as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the bending element is mounted on the lever arm by means of a pin to provide for a quick release action.
19. A machine as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the bending element has a curved, bar-engaging surface.
20. A machine as claimed in claim 1, wherein the clamping means is attached to a portion of the static anvil.
21. A machine as claimed in claim 20, wherein the attachment is by means of a removable pin engaging aligned holes.
22. A machine as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the clamping means is of inverted "U"-shape, comprising a pair of spaced-apart, parallel side walls and an interconnecting cross wall.
23. A machine as claimed in claim 1, wherein the clamping means incorporates a screw-adjustable clamping pad located opposite a surface of the static anvil to clamp the bar against that surface.
24. A machine as claimed in claim 23, wherein tightening of the clamping means is effected by providing a through hole in the screw component for engagement by a tommy-bar.
25. A machine as claimed in claim 24, wherein the tommy-bar is retained against loss by being attached to the support table by a chain.
26. A machine as claimed in claim 21, wherein the removable pin by which the clamping means is secured to the anvil is retained against loss by means of an at-tachment chain.
27. A machine as claimed in claim 1, wherein the static anvil comprises a planar, upper surface, normally intended to be horizontal, or generally so, which surface terminates at one end in a bending edge, around which the bar is bent by the bending element.
28. A machine as claimed in claim 27, wherein the bending edge is provided as a curved edge on a re-placeable, wear resistant pad.
29. A bar bending machine according to claim 1, wherein said support table is adapted to be bench mounted.
30. A bar bending machine according to claim 1, wherein said support table is adapted to be leg mounted.
