Abstract

"PORTABLE BULK HOPPER"
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
This hopper can be supported upon a truck base for transportation or can be supported upon legs or a stationary supporting surface when disengaged from the truck base. It may contain a plurality of individual bunkers or hoppers each with its own discharge chute for gravity unloading. It in-cludes folding up the side panels which may be used to extend the capacity of the hopper if relatively lightweight material is being carried. It is of a relatively lightweight construction and can be transported empty, on top of a flat load on the truck base. Detachable chute assemblies can be secured to any of the discharge areas of any of the individual hopper com-partments.

"PORTABLE BUNK HOPPER"
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to new and useful improve-mints in portable bulk hoppers, particularly portable bulk hoppers adapted to be carried on a truck base and removed when not required so that they may be stored on legs or upon a flat supporting surface.
Conventionally, bulk hoppers are built integrally with the truck base 50 that the truck base is only usable for the transportation and/or storage of materials which are adapt-Ed for use with hopper compartments. This means that the use is restricted generally to commented or semi-fluid materials.
Such truck hopper assemblies are extremely expensive and unless used continuously, represent unused capital.
SUMMARY OF TOE INVENTION
The present invention overcomes this disadvantage by providing a portable bulk hopper which can be carried upon a truck base or can be removed therefrom. When empty, it can be carried upon a flat load on the truck base so that it may be returned to or transported to a location whereupon it may be reloaded.
Each of the individual hopper compartments is provide Ed with its own discharge in the side of the hopper body and detachable chute components may be secured to the discharge as-symbol of the compartment requiring unloading.

the folding extensions may be provided upon the sides of/body so that, if a relatively light material is being hauled/ the capacity of the entire hopper can be increased readily and easily. Means are provided for detachably securing the tar-Pauline either to cover the entire hopper assembly when the sides are downwardly folder or to cover the assembly when the sides are folded upwardly in order to extend the capacity.
In accordance with the invention there is provided a portable bulk hopper for selective engagement upon a truck base comprising in combination a substantially rectangular supporting framework, a body mounted on said framework, said body including a pair of spaced and parallel side walls en tending upwardly from said framework, a pair of end walls ox-tending upwardly one from each end of said framework, and a plurality of hopper bases extending between said side and end walls thereby defining a plurality of individual hopper come apartments, a discharge assembly adjacent the base of each come apartment communicating through said side walls, means to select lively open and close said discharge assemblies, a chute come I potent for said discharge assemblies, and means to detachably secure said chute component to the sides of said body in open-alive discharging communication with any one of said discharge assemblies.
A further advantage of the invention is to provide a device of the character here within described which is simple in construction, economical in manufacture and otherwise well .

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
-Proceeding therefore to describe the invention in detail, reference should first be made to Figure 5 in which 10 illustrates, in side elevation, the other side of a truck base including a rub rail 11 and transverse support members 12 all of which are conventional. Upon this truck base is loaded a "return load" of lumber or the like illustrated by reference character 13 providing a relatively planar upper surface 14.
The rub rail includes U-shaped brackets 15 within which very tidally extending support legs or members 16 may be engaged not only to assist in holding the load 13 in position but also to prevent relative sideways movement of the portable bulk hopper collectively designated 17, which may be transported, when empty, upon the upper surface of the load 14.
In detail, the portable bulk hopper includes a sup-porting framework collectively designated 18 including long-frame tudinally extending spaced and parallel chassis/members 19, upwardly and forwardly inclining chassis member 20, upwardly and rearwardly extending chassis members 21~ and a plurality of transverse members (not illustrated) all of which form the base supporting framework which is preferably made from tubular .. .

A body collectively designated 21 is provided and is secured to the supporting framework 18 by conventional means. The body includes a pair of spaced and parallel sides 22 preferably formed from sheet metal or the like and these may be provided with longitudinally extending ribs 23 for stiffening purposes.
A front substantially vertical wall 24 is also pro-voided together with a spaced and parallel rear substantially vertical wall 25. These walls extend downwardly to a point indicated by reference character 26 and then incline inwardly to provide a front sloping wall surface 27 and a rear sloping wall surface 28 all of which are clearly illustrated.
A longitudinally extending central divider member 29 extends between the end walls 24 and 25 intermediate the sides thereof and adjacent the base I and a plurality of spaced and parallel transversely extending members 30 extend between the side walls at a plane similar to the plane of the longitudinal member 29 thus defining, when viewed in plan, a plurality of rectangular upper open ends 31 to individual hopper compartments formed as will hereinafter be described.
Each hopper compartment extending between adjacent the transverse members 30 and the longitudinal member 29 be-tweet one of the transverse members 30 and either of the end walls 24 or 25 . Each compartment includes the portion of the vertical side wall 22 of the body, a downwardly and out-33~

warmly sloping inner wall 32 extending from the longitudinal member 29 towards the base of the outer wall 22, and a pair of downwardly and inwardly sloping side walls 33 which ox-tend from adjacent the upper sides of the transverse dividers 30 and/or the end walls 25, with the three sloping slides and the vertical side terminating adjacent the base 34 of the individual hopper compartments formed by these sloping and vertical surfaces. A discharge assembly collectively designate Ed 35 is provided within the outer vertical wall of each of the individual hopper compartments, adjacent the base thereof, communicating through the vertical side walls 22 of the body as clearly shown in Figure 1, it being understood that in this embodiment, there are three such discharge assemblies on each side of the body. However it will be appreciated that the number of individual hopper compartments may be varied depending upon design parameters with each one being provided with its own discharge assembly 35.
Each discharge assembly 35 comprises a planar frame plate 36 defining an opening 37 formed through the vertical wall 22 of the sides of the body. Vertical guides 38 are sup ported within a front rectangular casing 39 also mounted upon the frame plate 36 and substantially rectangular plot slid ably engages the guides 38 for vertical motion therein actuated by upper handle 41 secured to the edge of the side plate. When in the lowermost position illustrated in Figure 6, the opening 37 is closed off. However, when raised as shown ;~23~ 3 in Figure 7, communication is provided between the inside of the individual hopper compartment and through the base of the discharge assembly. Lower side flanges 42 extend forwardly from each side of the casing 39 and define the sides of the opening 37.
A chute component collectively designated 43 is pro-voided detachably engage able with any one of the discharge as symbols 35, said chute component including a receiver 44 which is substantially rectangular when viewed in plan and includes spaced and parallel sides 45, front panel I and rear panel 47.
Hooked elements 48 are provided one upon each side of the no sever secured to the sides 45 as by welding or the like with the down turned ends 49 thereof extending rearwardly of side shrouds 50 which in turn act as continuations of the upper ends of the side 45. Substantially vertically situated tubular port lions 51 are secured one upon each side of the frame 36 of each discharge assembly adjacent the lower sides thereof and these act as hook engaging means for the portions I of the hook eye-mints 48. When these hook elements are engaged within the hook engaging portions 51, the open rear side of the receiver is en-gaged upon the front of the discharge assembly with the portions 50 engaging upon each side of the flanges 42 thus mounting the chute component in operative discharging communication with the discharge aperture. A flexible hose 52 is secured to the lower end of receiver 45 so that material discharging from the India visual hopper compartment to which the chute component is scour-~3~333 Ed may be conveyed to a convenient discharge location.
It will of course be appreciated that both the vertical members 29 and the transverse members 30 may extend vertically to connect with the framework 18 for strength purposes with the panels forming the sides of the individual hopper compartments being secured and braced, if necessary, in a conventional manner.
One of the features of the invention is the provision of hinged extensions 53 to the hopper body. Each of these ox tensions is substantially rectangular and is hinged along the upper edges of the sides 22 and the end 24 and 25, by means of piano hinges 54 or the like so that the rectangular extensions can be folded outwardly and downwardly to lie against the sides of the body 22 and ends 24 and I thereof, when not in use.
However when it is desired to increase the capacity of the hopper body, these extensions are folded upwardly to a substantially vertical position and held in position by means of corner come pennants 55 as illustrated in Figures 4 and PA. These corner components may include right angularly formed plates having toll-Ed over upper edges 56 which engage over the adjacent upper edges 57 of the extension panels 53 when in the uppermost post-lion shown in Figure 4. If desired, pins 58 may be provided ox-tending from the lower edges of the angle bracket or corner plate 55, engage able within means (not illustrated) adjacent the upper edges 54 of the body. This holds the four extensions in the position shown so that when relatively lightweight material is being hauled, the capacity may be increased. Normally, all of :~3S333 I

the hopper compartments and the extension portions will contain a similar material but if it is desired to segregate the material, then similar vertical extensions may engage the upper edges of the longitudinal meter 29 and the transverse members 30. How-ever these are not illustrated as it is believed that the design and operation thereof wit be apparent to anyone skilled in the art to which this invention relates.
A plurality of hooks 59 may be secured to the sides and ends of the body externally thereof adjacent the junction of the vertical and sloping portions 24 and 27 of the ends and a further plurality of hooks 60 may be provided adjacent the upper edges of the extensions. Either set may be used to hold down a tarpaulin or other cover with the lower row I being used if the extensions are inoperative and the upper row I be-in used if the extensions are in the position shown in Figure 4.
Means are provided to detachably secure the portable bulk hopper to the truck base and may take the form of tie down hooks 61 provided at selected locations around the periphery of the body through which various hitching means such as chains, cables or the like may engage.
Finally aperture plates 62 are provided on each side of the body to which a tow motor may be engaged fur manipulation of the portable bulk hopper.

~35333 1.0 It will be noted that one important feature of the invention is that the detachable side discharge nozzles allow the bulk material to be ejected outside the normal width of the trailer body or support frame on which the hop-per is mounted. Thus, the hopper can be of substantially the same width as the trailer and hence be of the maximum acceptable width while at the same time the material is properly discharged without the discharge being interfered with by the position of the trailer.
Since various modifications can be made in our invention as hereinabove described, and many apparently widely different embodiments of same made within the spit fit and scope of the claims without departing from such spirit and scope, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense.

Claims

CLAIMS:
(1) A portable bulk hopper for removable engage-ment upon a truck base comprising in combination a substan-tially rectangular supporting framework, arranged to engage upon said truck base, a body mounted on said framework so as to be supported above said truck base, said body includ-ing a pair of spaced and parallel substantially vertical side walls extending upwardly from said framework so as to be upstanding from and separated from said base, a pair of end walls extending upwardly one from each end of said framework, and a plurality of hopper bases extending be-tween said side and end walls thereby defining a plurality of individual hopper compartments, a plurality of discharge assemblies each arranged adjacent the base of a respective one of the compartments and a chute component for said dis-charge assemblies, each of said discharge assemblies com-prising opening means through one of said side walls, means to selectively open and close said opening means, and means to detachably secure said chute component to said side wall in operative discharging communication with said opening means.
(2) The invention according to Claim 1 in which each of said hopper compartments includes a substantially vertical outer side wall, a downwardly and outwardly slop-ing inner wall, and a pair of downwardly and inwardly slop-ing end walls, all of said walls terminating adjacent said discharge assembly within said substantially vertical outer side wall, said side walls of said body forming the sub-stantially vertical outer side walls of said hopper compart-ment.
(3) The invention according to Claim 1 which in-cludes means to detachably secure said bulk hopper to the associated truck base.
(4) The invention according to Claim 2 which in cludes means to detachably secure said bulk hopper to the as sociated truck base.
(5) The invention according to Claim 1 in which said body is substantially rectangular when viewed in plan and in cludes a central divider extending longitudinally between said end walls and a plurality of transverse dividers extending in spaced and parallel relationship between said side walls there-by defining a plurality of substantially rectangular open upper ends of said hopper compartments.
(6) The invention according to Claim 2 in which said body is substantially rectangular when viewed in plan and in-cludes a central divider extending longitudinally between said end walls and a plurality of transverse dividers extending in spaced and parallel relationship between said side walls there-by defining a plurality of substantially rectangular open upper ends of said hopper compartments, said substantially vertical outer side walls of said hopper compartment extending downward-ly from the outer side of said rectangular open upper end there-of, said sloping inner wallsextending downwardly and inwardly from the inner side of said rectangular open upper end and said pair of end walls extending downwardly from the ends of said rectangular open upper end.
(7) The invention according to Claim 3 in which said body is substantially rectangular when viewed in plan and in-cludes a central divider extending longitudinally between said end walls and a plurality of transverse dividers extending in spaced and parallel relationship between said side walls there-by defining a plurality of substantially rectangular open upper ends of said hopper compartments.
(8) The invention according to Claim 4 in which said body is substantially rectangular when viewed in plan and in-cludes a central divider extending longitudinally between said end walls and a plurality of transverse dividers extending in spaced and parallel relationship between said side walls there-by defining a plurality of substantially rectangular open upper ends of said hopper compartments, said substantially vertical outer side walls of said hopper compartment extending downward-lye from the outer side of said rectangular open upper end thereof, said sloping inner walls extending downwardly and in-warmly from the inner side of said rectangular open upper end and said pair of end walls extending downwardly from the ends of said rectangular open upper end.
(9) The invention according to Claim 1 in which each discharge assembly includes an opening through the side wall of said body adjacent the lower side edge thereof and communicating each with the interior of one of the individual hopper compartments and selectively movable closure plate for said opening, said chute assembly including a receiver and a flexible spout extending from said receiver, said means to de-tachably secure said chute component to the sides of said body including a pair of hooks one on each side of said receiver, hook engaging means one on each of said discharge assemblies, said hooks detachably engaging said hook engaging means and positioning said receiver in operative communication with said opening.
(10) The invention according to Claim 2 in which each discharge assembly includes an opening through the side wall of said body adjacent the lower side edge thereof and communicating each with the interior of one of the individual hopper compartments and selectively movable closure plate for said opening, said chute assembly including a receiver and a flexible spout extending from said receiver, said means to de-tachably secure said chute component to the sides of said body including a pair of hooks one on each side of said receiver, hook engaging means one on each of said discharge assemblies, said hooks detachably engaging said hook engaging means and positioning said receiver in operative communication with said opening.
(11) The invention according to Claim 3 in which each discharge assembly includes an opening through the side wall of said body adjacent the lower side edge thereof and communicating each with the interior of one of the individual hopper compartments and selectively movable closure plate for said opening, said chute assembly including a receiver and a flexible spout extending from said receiver, said means to de-tachably secure said chute component to the sides of said body including a pair of hooks one on each side of said receiver, hook engaging means one on each of said discharge assemblies, said hooks detachably engaging said hook engaging means and positioning said receiver in operative communication with said opening.
(12) The invention according to Claim 4 in which each discharge assembly includes an opening through the side wall of said body adjacent the lower side edge thereof and communicating each with the interior of one of the individual hopper compartments and selectively movable closure plate for said opening, said chute assembly including a receiver and a flexible spout extending from said receiver, said means to de-tachably secure said chute component to the sides of said body including a pair of hooks one on each side of said receiver, hook engaging means one on each of said discharge assemblies, said hooks detachably engaging said hook engaging means and positioning said receiver in operative communication with said opening.
(13) The invention according to Claim 5 in which each discharge assembly includes an opening through the side wall of said body adjacent the lower side edge thereof and communicating each with the interior of one of the individual hopper compartments and selectively movable closure plate for said opening, said chute assembly including a receiver and a flexible spout extending from said receiver, said means to de-tachably secure said chute component to the sides of said body including a pair of hooks one on each side of said receiver, hook engaging means one on each of said discharge assemblies, said hooks detachably engaging said hook engaging means and positioning said receiver in operative communication with said opening.
(14) The invention according to Claim 6 in which each discharge assembly includes an opening through the side wall of said body adjacent the lower side edge thereof and communicating each with the interior of one of the individual hopper compartments and selectively movable closure plate for said opening, said chute assembly including a receiver and a flexible spout extending from said receiver, said means to de-tachably secure said chute component to the sides of said body including a pair of hooks one on each side of said receiver, hook engaging means one on each of said discharge assemblies, said hooks detachably engaging said hook engaging means and positioning said receiver in operative communication with said opening.
(15) The invention according to Claim 7 in which each discharge assembly includes an opening through the side wall of said body adjacent the lower side edge thereof and communicating each with the interior of one of the individual hopper compartments and selectively movable closure plate for said opening, said chute assembly including a receiver and a flexible spout extending from said receiver, said means to de-tachably secure said chute component to the sides of said body including a pair of hooks one on each side of said receiver, hook engaging means one on each of said discharge assemblies, said hooks detachably engaging said hook engaging means and positioning said receiver in operative communication with said opening.
(16) The invention according to Claim 8 in which each discharge assembly includes an opening through the side wall of said body adjacent the lower side edge thereof and communicating each with the interior of one of the individual hopper compartments and selectively movable closure plate for said opening, said chute assembly including a receiver and a flexible spout extending from said receiver, said means to de-tachably secure said chute component to the sides of said body including a pair of hooks one on each side of said receiver, hook engaging means one on each of said discharge assemblies, said hooks detachably engaging said hook engaging means and positioning said receiver in operative communication with said opening.
(17) The invention according to Claims 1, 2 or 3 which includes substantially rectangular extension panels hingedly secured along the upper edges of said side walls and said end walls of said body and movable from a folded down position lying against the outer surface of said side and end walls of said body, to an errected substantially vertical posi-tion forming an upper extension to said body, and means to de-tachably secure said extension panels in the errected position as vertical continuations of said side and end walls of said body.
(18) The invention according to Claims 4, 5 or 6 which includes substantially rectangular extension panels hingedly secured along the upper edges of said side walls and said end walls of said body and movable from a folded down position lying against the outer surface of said side and end walls of said body, to an errected substantially vertical posi-tion forming an upper extension to said body, and means to de-tachably secure said extension panels in the errected position as vertical continuations of said side and end walls of said body.
(19) The invention according to Claims 7, 8 or 9 which includes substantially rectangular extension panels hingedly secured along the upper edges of said side walls and said end walls of said body and movable from a folded down position lying against the outer surface of said side and end walls of said body, to an errected substantially vertical posi-tion forming an upper extension to said body, and means to de-tachably secure said extension panels in the errected position as vertical continuations of said side and end walls of said body.
(20) The invention according to Claims 10, 11 or 12 which includes substantially rectangular extension panels hingedly secured along the upper edges of said side walls and said end walls of said body and movable from a folded down position lying against the outer surface of said side and end walls of said body, to an errected substantially vertical posi-tion forming an upper extension to said body, and means to de-tachably secure said extension panels in the errected position as vertical continuations of said side and end walls of said body.
(21) The invention according to Claims 13, 14 or 15 which includes substantially rectangular extension panels hingedly secured along the upper edges of said side walls and said end walls of said body and movable from a folded down position lying against the outer surface of said side and end walls of said body, to an errected substantially vertical posi-tion forming an upper extension to said body, and means to de-tachably secure said extension panels in the errected position as vertical continuations of said side and end walls of said body.
(22) The invention according to Claim 16 which in-cludes substantially rectangular extension panels hingedly se-cured along the upper edges of said side walls and said end walls of said body and movable from a folded down position ly-ing against the outer surface of said side and end walls of said body, to an errected substantially vertical position forming an upper extension to said body, and means to detach-ably secure said extension panels in the errected position as vertical continuations of said side and end walls of said body.
