Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A disposable diaper having elasticized crotch seals and an elas-ticized waist seal formed from elastic members secured to the backing sheet.
The elastic members are under such tension so as to provide an initial stretch-ing of the elastic members extending substantially at right angles to each other thereby maximizing the comfort of an infant wearing the disposable diaper.

Description

~ rL~ ON
This applicatioIl is related to Canadian ~pplication Serial No.
398,679 :Filed I~Iarch 17, 1982 for Disposable Diaper W:ith Stressed Crotch and Waist Scals.
BAC~GROUND OF TIIE INVENTION
FIELD O_ THE INVENTION
This invention relates to disposable diapers and more particularly to a contoured diaper having a waist seal and provided with tabs that are extensions of sa:id waist seals.
DESCRIPTION OF T}IE PRIOR ~RT
In the past, elasticized contoured diapers have been developed such as that disclosed in the United States l'atent to Buell, No. 3,869,003, issued January 1~, 1975, :Eor Contractable Side Portions for Disposable Diapers, wherein elas-t:ic strips are secured to the crotch portions o:E the diaper forming elasticized crotch seals for securement over the legs of the infant to prevent loss of fluid from the interior of the diaper along the legs of the infant.
In United States Patent to l~oon and Endres, No. ~1,050,~62, elastic strips are also provided in the crotch area o:E the cl:iaper.
The crotch seals clo prevent leakage of El~icl clowrl the legs, but when aIl infaIlt is Iy-ing clown, very ofteIl flu.id leaks past the wa:ist o-E the di.aper.
E~perimental use of waist bands has proven tilem unsatisfactory because no elastic means for adjusting the tension at the waist has been heretofore achieved.
Elasticized waist seals are old and well known for various garments including diapers. These waist seals have been for the purpose of maintaining the garment in place and have not been for the purposes of the present invention s~ as to provide for a fluid barrier while also providing for positioning the 3S~

diaper on an in:Fant wi-th an adjusted, comfortable amount of -tension a-t -the waist.
UM~IARY OF ~IE INVENTION
The present invention overcomes the disadvantages of the prior art diapers by providing a disposable diaper comprising a backing sheet, an absorbent pad on said backing sheet, a top sheet overlying said absorbent pad, said top sheet being secured to said backing sheet along the peripheral edge thereof, an elastic member secured to said backing sheet along an end edge forming a waist seal, said elastic member integrally extending linearly outwardly of said top sheet and backing sheet and beyond the side eclges thereof, de:Einillg integral elastic waist tabs in a longitudinal alignmellt with said eklstic member for astening the diaper Oll the user ancl for adjust-ing the tensioll on said waist seal.
B F.F DESCRIPTION OF TIIE DRA~INGS
Figure 1 is a plan view of a disposable diaper constructed in accordance with the concept of the present invelltioll;
Figure 2 is a sectional detail view taken along the plalle of line 2-2 in Pigure l;
Figure 3 :is a sec-tional detai:l view s:imilar to Figure 2 of a modified form of the inventiol-l; and, Figure ~ is a view similar to Figure 2 of another and preferred form of the invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION Ol` TIIE INVENTION
With COIItillUillg reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference numerals designate sin!ilar parts throughout the various views, reference numeral 10 generally designates an elasticized and contoured diaper ~ ¢
5~

constructed in accordance with the concept of the present invention. The diaper lO is of an hour-glass configuration forming a crotch area l2 and four portions of greater width defining ears 14, 16, etc. The diaper includes a backing sheet - 2a -5~

22 of an impervious polyethylene or the like. A top sheet 24, preferably of non-woven polyethylene or polypropylene Eibers is secured to the backing sheet 22 along the peripheral edges of-the cliaper l0 e.g. by heat set sealing or preferably with adhesive, either hot melt or pressure sensitive. An absorbent pad 26 is disposed between the top sheet 24 and the backing sheet 22 and may be of woodfluff or the like. Wadding sheets may be provided as desired.
Optionally, and not particularly forming a part of the present in-vention, a pair of elasticized strips may be provided (not shown) forming crotch seals in a conventional manner.
A waterproof elastic member 40 is bonded to the backing sheet 22 by lines or spots of adhesive or other suitable means. As sho~l in ~igures l through 3, the elastic member 40 may be bonded on th0 outside of the backing sheet. Alternatively, and preferably, as shown in Figure 4, -the elastic me111ber 40 ls bonded to the backing sheet inwardly thereof.
Ihe elastic member 40 is bonded to the backing sheet 22 when in a stretched condition and thus contracts the waist area to form a waist seal. It is attached to the backing sheet inwardly of the bonded edge portion thereoE.
In order to fasten the diaper on a1l inFant, tabs 42 and 44 mcly be employecl. These tabs, in the embod:ime1lt shown in Figures l and 2 are integral, elastic e,Ytensions oE the walst elast-ic me111ber 40 and are coa-tecl with adhesivc 46 with protective release sheets 48 remo-vably disposed thereon for removal immediately prior to use.
In placing the d:iaper on an infant, -the waist may be stretched to a desirable con1fortable tension and the tabs 42 and 44 secured to the other pair of ears (not shown) of the diaper.
In Figure 3 there is shown a modified form of the invention in which separate tabs 50 are bonded to elastic member 40 in alignment therewith Eor 5~

placing desired stretch and tensi.on on the elastic member 40 when secur;.ng the diaper on an in-Eant.
In Figure 4, the preEerred Eorm of the invention, there is employed ~he elastic member 40 inwardly o-E the backing shee~ 40 with adhesive~ 46 on the ends 42 extending beyond the backing shee-t 22 and release sheets 48 provided to protect the adhesive until immediately before use.
