Abstract
ABSTRACT OF DISCLOSURE
A paper fibre length measuring instrument, comprising a capillary tube, through which the fibres to be measured, in a liquid, are passed, and having on one side of the capillary tube a light source and on the opposite side of the capillary tube a photocell from the results of which the lengths of the fibres are determinable. The photocell comprises a diode matrix of which the diodes calculate the fibre length from the image of the passing fibre.

Description
iL17~3~
The present invention relates to a paper fibre length measuring instrument comprising a capillary tube through which the fibres to be measured, in a liquid, are passed and having on one side of the capillary tube a light source and on the opposite side of the capillary tube a photocell, from the results of which the fibre lengths are determinable.
By the invention a more precise procedure for measuring fibre length is provided, compared with those in use nowadays. The length measuring instrument of the invention is such that the photocell comprises a diode matrix, the diodes of this matrix calculating the length of the fibre from the image of the passing fibre. With the invention a highly reliable and accurate length is obtained - for the fibre because the passing fibre, at a certain point, obscures part of the diodes, on the basis of their number the length of the fibre being immediately readable on a display unit which is part of the length measuring instrument.
In an advantageous embodiment of the invention between the light source and the diode matrix are positioned crossed polarizers, by which it can be ensured that the instrument will only register fibres and not other foreign objects, such as air bubbles.
The present invention will be further illustrated by way of the accompanying drawing , presenting the length measuring instrument according to the embodiment of the present invention in simplified manner.
The length measuriny instrument comprises a capillary tube 1, through which the fibres 2 to be measured, in a liquid, are passed. On one side of the capillary tube 1 there is a light source 3 and on the opposite side of the capillary tube, a photocell 4. The photocell 4 comprises 3~
... .
a diode matrix, of which the diodes 5 calculate the fibre length from the image of the passing fibre 2. Between the light source 3 and the diode matrix 4, polarizers 6, 7 are provided.
The fibres 2 are passed downwardly within the capillary tube 1, in the direction indicated by the arrow 8.
With the aid of the light source 3 and lenses 6, 7, 9, 10 a moving image shaped like the fibre is obtained on the diode matrix 4. When the lower end of the image reaches the lowermost diode 11 of the diode matrix, the image upwardly covers part of the diodes 5, whence the fibre length is immediately readable.
