Abstract
ABSTRACT
The invention relates to a lock for a patio door of the sliding type. The lock enables a door to be bolted simultaneously at the top and bottom by a single operating handle. A deadlock mechanism is incorporated operable by a conventional cylinder lock. In one arrangement the dead-lock and the bolting mechanism can be operated from both sides of the door. The basic mechanism of the lock consists of an operating tangent plate connected by pin and slot mechanism to a second tangent plate. Each tangent plate is in turn connected by a pin and slot mechanism to a slider plate and each slider plate is connected to a bolt. The deadlock includes a slidable locking plate movable by a cam mechanism operated by a cylinder lock.
The invention relates to a lock for a patio door of the sliding type. The lock enables a door to be bolted simultaneously at the top and bottom by a single operating handle. A deadlock mechanism is incorporated operable by a conventional cylinder lock. In one arrangement the dead-lock and the bolting mechanism can be operated from both sides of the door. The basic mechanism of the lock consists of an operating tangent plate connected by pin and slot mechanism to a second tangent plate. Each tangent plate is in turn connected by a pin and slot mechanism to a slider plate and each slider plate is connected to a bolt. The deadlock includes a slidable locking plate movable by a cam mechanism operated by a cylinder lock.

LOCK FOR A SLIDING PATIO DOOR
This invention relates to locks of the type which have a single operating mechanism to activate bolts at two spaced locations and in particular the invention relates to locks suitable for sliding patio doors.
An object of an aspect of the invention is to provide a compact lock mechanism which enables a patio door, or a window, for example, to be bolted simultaneously at two different locations (such as the top and bottom of a patio door) by a single movement of an operating handle. The lock of this invention is of elongated construction so as to occupy the minimum width so that it will fit into a very narrow door or window frame.
An aspect of the invention is as follows:
A lock for a sliding patio door or window, the lock being of nàrrow elongated form and comprising an operating member in the form of a first pivoted tangent plate, a first s ider plate connected to said first tangent plate by a pin and slot mechanism, the slider plate being adapted to be connected to a first bolt member, the tangent plate being connected by a second pin and slot mechanism to a second pivoted tangent plate, in such a manner that clockwise rotational movement of the first tangent plate causes anti-clockwise rotational movement of the second tangent plate and vice-versa, the second tangent plate also being connected by a pin and slot mechanism to a second slider plate adapted to be connected to a second bolt member, so that rotation of the operating member causes the two slider plates to move in opposite directions so that 1~3~674 the bolt members provide simultaneous locking at both ends of the lock, the lock including a deadlock mechanism compri-sing a plate which has a locking projection adapted to be moved into a position in which it inhibits movement of the lock mechanism.
Preferably the two slider plates are arranged parallel to each other and the pin employed to connect one slider plate to its tangent plate passes through an aperture in the other slider plate.
IO The locking projection or foot may be adapted to block movement of one of the pins connected to one of the tangent plates.
The deadlock locking plate may be moveable by engagement of a rotary cam with a cam surface on the plate such as to move the locking plate to cause said projection or foot to inhibit movement of the lock mechanism.
Said rotary cam may be operable by a conventional cylinder lock.

The bolting action of the lock and/or the deadlock action may be operable from either side of the lock.
Preferably the lock includes a lock operating handle and a fixed handle for sliding the door, the operating handle being located at one end of the lock and being small compared with the fixed handle which occupies substantially the remaining length of the lock.
In the accompanying drwaings:-FIGURE 1 illustrates diagrammatically part of a patio door with a single-sided lock, embodying the present invention, incorporated in the door;

In Figure 1 is shown, in chain dotted line, part of a patio door 10 to which is fitted a lock 11 embodying the present invention. To upper and lower door frame - members 12, 13 respectively are fitted keep members 14, 15 adapted to be engaged by bolt members 16, 17 (in the form of long rods) which are to be operated simultan-eously by the lock 11, thus locking the patio door both at its top and bottom.
The lock incorporates a small pivoted operating handle 18 for bolting and unbolting the door and a larger fixed handle 19 which occupies most of the remaining axial length of the lock, for sliding the door bodily.
The lock has a rigid base plate 9 which can be fixed in a recess in the door 10 by bolts (not shown).
The operating handle 18 is pivoted on plate 9 and is fixed to a first tangent plate 20 (Figures 2 and 3 and 3b). Tnagent plate 20 is connected to a first slider plate 21 by a first pin and slot mechanism comprising a slot 22 in tangent plate 20 and a pin 23 fixed on the first slider plate 21. Pin 23 passes through an elongated slot 23a in slider plate 28.
Slider plate 21 has a rod-like bolt member 16 fixed to lt.
Tangent plate 20 is also connected to a second tangent plate 24 (see Figures 3 and 3b) via a second pin -and-slot mechanism comprising a slot 25 in tangent plate 20 and a pin 26 fixed to tangent plate 24.
Tangent plate 24, pivoted at 27, is connected to a second slider plate 28 via a pin and slot mechanism, the slot 29 being formed in tangent plate 24 and the pin 30 being fixed to a slider plate 28 which is in turn attached to rod~like bolt member 17.
When handle 18 is turned anti-clockwise from its position shown in Figures 1 and 2 the tangent plate 20 turns in the same direction, which is clockwise as seen in Figure 3. This causes two things to happen.
Firstly slider plate 21 is moved upwardly releasing bolt member 16 from its keeper. Secondly, and simultaneously, tangent plate 24 turns anticlockwise (as seen in Figure 3) which moves slider plate 28 downwardly thus releasing bolt member 17 from its keeper 15.
A deadlock enables the lock mechanism to be rendered inoperable at will.
A cylinder locl< 31 which is key-operated rotate~
a cam 32 to contact cam surface 32a on lower foot 33 of a slidable locking plate 4~. This will cause locking plate 44 to slide downwardly (see Figure 3a for two positions of locking plate) so as to bring the upper foot 45 of the plate 44 into the path of pin 26 10 -(see Figure 2) thus preventing any further movement of both tangent plates 20 and 24. This, in turn, prevents any movement of handle 18. As shown in the drawings the deadlock has not been operated so the main bolting action of the lock can be used at will. The locking plate 44 is resiliently held in either the deadlocked ur unlocked position by a spring 46 which ensures full travel in either direction of the locking plate. When lock 31 is operated to unlock the door, the key is turned away frum the leading edge of the door, i.e.
anti-clockwise as seen in Figure 1.
Figure 4 i3 similar to the arrangement shown in Figures 1 to 3 e-xcept that the bolting action of the lock and the deadlock can be operated from either side of the lock. It will be seen that there are two operating handles 18, two cylinder locks 31 and also two fixed handles 19 to enable any operation to be oarried out from-either side.
As can be seen from the drawings the pivoted operating handle 18 is located adjacent one end of the lock and is small compared with the larger fixed handIe 19 for sliding the door bodily. It will be noted that the handle 19 occupies virtually the remaining length of the lock apart from the space occupied by the operating handle.
It will also be noted that the lock is of elongated construction and that the bolt member 16 is at the end of the lock remote from its operating tangent plate 20, and the bolt member 17 is at the end of the lock remote from its operating tangent plate 24.
The lock can be used as either a right-hand or left-hand operating lock by reversing the tangent plates 20, 24, slider plates 21 and 28 and locking plate 44.
LOCK FOR A SLIDING PATIO DOOR
This invention relates to locks of the type which have a single operating mechanism to activate bolts at two spaced locations and in particular the invention relates to locks suitable for sliding patio doors.
An object of an aspect of the invention is to provide a compact lock mechanism which enables a patio door, or a window, for example, to be bolted simultaneously at two different locations (such as the top and bottom of a patio door) by a single movement of an operating handle. The lock of this invention is of elongated construction so as to occupy the minimum width so that it will fit into a very narrow door or window frame.
An aspect of the invention is as follows:
A lock for a sliding patio door or window, the lock being of nàrrow elongated form and comprising an operating member in the form of a first pivoted tangent plate, a first s ider plate connected to said first tangent plate by a pin and slot mechanism, the slider plate being adapted to be connected to a first bolt member, the tangent plate being connected by a second pin and slot mechanism to a second pivoted tangent plate, in such a manner that clockwise rotational movement of the first tangent plate causes anti-clockwise rotational movement of the second tangent plate and vice-versa, the second tangent plate also being connected by a pin and slot mechanism to a second slider plate adapted to be connected to a second bolt member, so that rotation of the operating member causes the two slider plates to move in opposite directions so that 1~3~674 the bolt members provide simultaneous locking at both ends of the lock, the lock including a deadlock mechanism compri-sing a plate which has a locking projection adapted to be moved into a position in which it inhibits movement of the lock mechanism.
Preferably the two slider plates are arranged parallel to each other and the pin employed to connect one slider plate to its tangent plate passes through an aperture in the other slider plate.
IO The locking projection or foot may be adapted to block movement of one of the pins connected to one of the tangent plates.
The deadlock locking plate may be moveable by engagement of a rotary cam with a cam surface on the plate such as to move the locking plate to cause said projection or foot to inhibit movement of the lock mechanism.
Said rotary cam may be operable by a conventional cylinder lock.

The bolting action of the lock and/or the deadlock action may be operable from either side of the lock.
Preferably the lock includes a lock operating handle and a fixed handle for sliding the door, the operating handle being located at one end of the lock and being small compared with the fixed handle which occupies substantially the remaining length of the lock.

In Figure 1 is shown, in chain dotted line, part of a patio door 10 to which is fitted a lock 11 embodying the present invention. To upper and lower door frame - members 12, 13 respectively are fitted keep members 14, 15 adapted to be engaged by bolt members 16, 17 (in the form of long rods) which are to be operated simultan-eously by the lock 11, thus locking the patio door both at its top and bottom.
The lock incorporates a small pivoted operating handle 18 for bolting and unbolting the door and a larger fixed handle 19 which occupies most of the remaining axial length of the lock, for sliding the door bodily.
The lock has a rigid base plate 9 which can be fixed in a recess in the door 10 by bolts (not shown).
The operating handle 18 is pivoted on plate 9 and is fixed to a first tangent plate 20 (Figures 2 and 3 and 3b). Tnagent plate 20 is connected to a first slider plate 21 by a first pin and slot mechanism comprising a slot 22 in tangent plate 20 and a pin 23 fixed on the first slider plate 21. Pin 23 passes through an elongated slot 23a in slider plate 28.
Slider plate 21 has a rod-like bolt member 16 fixed to lt.
Tangent plate 20 is also connected to a second tangent plate 24 (see Figures 3 and 3b) via a second pin -and-slot mechanism comprising a slot 25 in tangent plate 20 and a pin 26 fixed to tangent plate 24.
Tangent plate 24, pivoted at 27, is connected to a second slider plate 28 via a pin and slot mechanism, the slot 29 being formed in tangent plate 24 and the pin 30 being fixed to a slider plate 28 which is in turn attached to rod~like bolt member 17.
When handle 18 is turned anti-clockwise from its position shown in Figures 1 and 2 the tangent plate 20 turns in the same direction, which is clockwise as seen in Figure 3. This causes two things to happen.
Firstly slider plate 21 is moved upwardly releasing bolt member 16 from its keeper. Secondly, and simultaneously, tangent plate 24 turns anticlockwise (as seen in Figure 3) which moves slider plate 28 downwardly thus releasing bolt member 17 from its keeper 15.
A deadlock enables the lock mechanism to be rendered inoperable at will.
A cylinder locl< 31 which is key-operated rotate~
a cam 32 to contact cam surface 32a on lower foot 33 of a slidable locking plate 4~. This will cause locking plate 44 to slide downwardly (see Figure 3a for two positions of locking plate) so as to bring the upper foot 45 of the plate 44 into the path of pin 26 10 -(see Figure 2) thus preventing any further movement of both tangent plates 20 and 24. This, in turn, prevents any movement of handle 18. As shown in the drawings the deadlock has not been operated so the main bolting action of the lock can be used at will. The locking plate 44 is resiliently held in either the deadlocked ur unlocked position by a spring 46 which ensures full travel in either direction of the locking plate. When lock 31 is operated to unlock the door, the key is turned away frum the leading edge of the door, i.e.
anti-clockwise as seen in Figure 1.
Figure 4 i3 similar to the arrangement shown in Figures 1 to 3 e-xcept that the bolting action of the lock and the deadlock can be operated from either side of the lock. It will be seen that there are two operating handles 18, two cylinder locks 31 and also two fixed handles 19 to enable any operation to be oarried out from-either side.
As can be seen from the drawings the pivoted operating handle 18 is located adjacent one end of the lock and is small compared with the larger fixed handIe 19 for sliding the door bodily. It will be noted that the handle 19 occupies virtually the remaining length of the lock apart from the space occupied by the operating handle.
It will also be noted that the lock is of elongated construction and that the bolt member 16 is at the end of the lock remote from its operating tangent plate 20, and the bolt member 17 is at the end of the lock remote from its operating tangent plate 24.
The lock can be used as either a right-hand or left-hand operating lock by reversing the tangent plates 20, 24, slider plates 21 and 28 and locking plate 44.
Claims (11)
1. A lock for a sliding patio door or window, the lock being of narrow elongated form and comprising an operating member in the form of a first pivoted tangent plate, a first slider plate connected to said first tangent plate by a pin and slot mechanism, the slider plate being adapted to be connected to a first bolt member, the tangent plate being connected by a second pin and slot mechanism to a second pivoted tangent plate, in such a manner that clockwise rotational movement of the first tangent plate causes anti-clockwise rotational movement of the second tangent plate and vice-versa, the second tangent plate also being connected by a pin and slot mechanism to a second slider plate adapted to be connected to a second bolt member, so that rotation of the operating member causes the two slider plates to move in opposite directions so that the bolt members provide simultaneous locking at both ends of the lock, the lock including a deadlock mechanism comprising a plate which has a locking projection adapted to be moved into a position in which it inhibits movement of the lock mechanism.
2. A lock according to claim 1 and in which the first bolt member is at the end of the lock remote from the first tangent plate and the second bolt member is at the end of the lock remote from the second tangent plate.
3. A lock according to claim 1 or claim 2 and in which the two slider plates are arranged parallel to each other and the pin employed to connect one slider plate to its tangent plate passes through a slot in the other slider plate.
4. A lock according to Claim 1 and in which said locking projection is adapted to block movement of one of the pins connected to one of the tangent plates.
5. A lock according to Claim 4 and in which the deadlock locking plate is moveable by engagement of a rotary cam with a cam surface on the plate such as to move the locking plate to cause said projection to inhibit movement of the lock mechanism.
6. A lock according to Claim 5 and in which said rotary cam is operable by a conventional cylinder lock.
7. A lock according to Claim 1 and in which the lock and the deadlock are operable from either side of the lock.
8. A lock according to Claim 1 and in which said slider plates are connected to rods which act as said bolt members, the bolt members cooperating with keep members remote from the lock.
9. A lock according to Claim 8 in combination with a sliding door in which said bolt members are located respectively at the top and bottom of the door.
10. A lock according to Claim 8 in combination with a hinged window the bolt members being located at opposite ends of the windows.
11. A lock according to Claim 1 and in which an operating handle is located adjacent one end of the lock and is small compared with a fixed handle for sliding the door which occupies substantially the remaining length of the lock.
