Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
The present invention relates to portable apparatus for cooking and smoking food. The apparatus comprises a closed smoking chamber and a heating chamber which is disposed below the smoking chamber and contains heat generat-ing means. The heating chamber comprises walls on one of which is secured a narrow shelf for holding sawdust, wood chips, or the like. A plate, having holes formed therein, is disposed between the smoking chamber and heating chamber. In operation food is disposed above the plate and the heat generat-ing means cooks the food, causes the sawdust to smoulder and causes smoke to move through the holes into the smoking chamber thereby flavouring the food.

Description

Z~8 The present invention relates to portable apparatus for cooking and smoking food.
There is a need in the cooking field for a portable and convenient cooker that is capable of cooking and/or smoking food and that is compact, durable, easy to use, inexpensive to manufacture and light in weight. Accord-ing to the present invention there is provided a cooker which fulfills these requirements and which is particularly useful for camping, hunting, or fishing trips.
According to the present invention there is provided a portable cooker comprising a closed smoking chamber, a heating chamber adapted to be disposed below the smoking chamber and to contain heat generating means, the heating chamber comprising walls on one of which is secured a narrow shelf for holding -sawdust, woodchips, or the like, and a plate, having holes formed therein, adapted to be disposed between the smoking chamber and the heating chamber, whereby in operation food is disposed above the plate and the heat generating means cooks the food, causes the sawdust, woodchips or the like, to smoulder and causes smoke to move through the holes into the smoking chamber thereby flavouring the food.
In the above cooker it is to be particularly noted that the shelf for holding the sawdust, woodchips, or the like, is located on one of the walls of the heating chamber. This arrangement permits the food to be placed direct-ly above the heat generating means for effective heating and at the same time keeps the sawdust out of the direct line of heat so that it does not char and give a burnt taste to the food. Locating the sawdust in a substantially closed heating chamber also helps to keep the food clean.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a preferred embodiment of the por-table cooker;
Figure 2 is a transverse, cross-section of the portable cooker shown in Figure l;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of one embodiment of a burner unit suitable for use with the portable cooker shown in Figure l; and Figure 4 is an exploded, perspective view of the portable cooker of Figure 1, also showing a burner unit location in the assembly.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2 there is shown a smoking chamber 1 and a heating chamber 2. The heating chamber consists of an open metal box having a bottom and four walls. An opening 3 is provided in the front wall to per-mit insertion of a burner unit into the heating chamber and to provide air for the burner. Further air holes 4 are provided on the side and end walls of the heating chamber to further provide air for the burner and to prevent over-heating of the burner. Narrow shelves 5 are provided on the side walls of the heating chamber for holding sawdust, woodchips or the like. One U-shaped rod 6 is pivotally secured about each of the front wall and the end wall of the heating chamber and each is adapted to fasten over projections 7 formed on the exterior of the smoking chamber. The cooker may thus be secured together for easy handling and portability.
A vent 8 of a type known in the art is provided on the top of the smoking chamber for regulating the steam generated inside thereby enabling the user to control the softness or firmness of the food being cooked. A
handle 9 is provided on the top of smoking chamber 1 to facilitate carrying the cooker.
With reference also to Figure ~, there is provided a plate 10 and a grill 11 arranged to rest on flanges 12 formed near the top of the walls
- 2 -"'~ ' :~ , -of the heating chamber. The plate is provided, along the two edges which are above the shelves, with holes 13 to allow smoke to move from the heating chamber into the smoking chamber. During cooking food may be placed directly on the grill 11; however, it is preferable that food be placed on pieces of aluminum foil with the side and ends rolled up in order to retain the juices of the food and to keep the unit clean.
Referring to Figures 3 and 4, the burner unit 14 is adapted to fit inside the heating chamber 2. The burner unit 14 consists of a metal box with a handle 15. In its preferred embodiment, the side walls of the box taper inwardly from the bottom and curve outwardly slightly at the top. Pre-ferably, the burner unit is filled about 2/3 full with scoriaceous rocks 16 which are then covered with a plate 17 to keep them in place. The plate 17 is welded at its ends 1~ and partially on its sides 20. A gap 21 is left to let the vapour from the fuel escape. An asbestos string or wick 22 may be in-serted in a hole 23 in the centre of the plate 17 to serve as a starter to warm up and ignite the fuel.
In operation, sawdust or chips are placed on shelves 5. Burner unit 14 is filled with methyl hydrate or the like and is then placed cen-trally in the heating chamber as shown in Figures 2 and 4. ~The plate 10, the grill 11 and the food are placed above the heating chamber with the plate lO
resting on flanges 12. The combination is then covered with the smoking chamber 1. The U-shaped rods 6 are folded as shown in Figure 4 thus providing an air space under the bottom of the heating chamber. This prevents direct con-tact during cooking between the bottom of the heating chamber and the surface on which the cooker is placed thereby preventing heat damage to that surface.
The methyl hydrate is then ignited. At first the methyl hydrate will burn intensely thus immediately causing the sawdust to smoulder and the food to begin cooking. After a short period, the flame will slow down and will burn .

:.~ .,'- "
- . ,, - , Z0~38 only as fast as methyl hydrate is released from the scoriaceous rock. With the side walls of the burner unit tapering inwardly and curving outwardly slightly at the top, a rolling flame will issue to the sides oE the heating chamber thus heating the sawdust. If the cooker should become too hot during cooking the heat may be reduced by pouring water in the bottom of the heating chamber.
The sawdust in the shelves 5 will smoulder but not burn because it is not in the direct path of the heat of the burner unit and air flow to the sawdust is restricted. Smoke will rise from the sawdust and pass through the holes 13 in the plate 10 thereby flavouring the food. Although the burner unit is small in comparison to the cooking surface, the use of methyl hydrate provides sufficient heat and the me~al plate lO disperses the heat over the cooking surface. This arrangement saves construction costs and saves fuel.
By adjusting the vent 8 the firmness or softness of the food can be controlled.
It can thus be seen that the portable cooker is ideal for cooking and smoking food on campingJ hunting or fishing trips. If the cooker is made 16" long by 9" high and is made of a suitable thickness of aluminum sheet, a suitable material for the cooker, then it will weigh only about 5 pounds but will be large enough to cook food for more than one person.
