Abstract

27,401 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
Antiperspirant roll-on compositions in general and, in particular, antiperspirant roll-on compositions containing a lactate, citrate, or tartrate ester of an alkylene diol or triol to provide enhanced antiperspirant efficacy.

Description

The invention relates to impxoved antiperspirant roll-on compositions in general and, in particulax, to antiperspirant roll-on ccmpositions containing a lactate, cltrate, or taxtrate ester of an alkylene diol or triol to provide enhanced antiperspirant efficacyO
Antipexspirant xoll-on compositions generally col~tain an aluminum or aluminumrzirconium salt as active astringents. Emollients may include liquid fatty acid esters, silicones, minercil oil, propoxylated alcohols, etc., which tend to coat the particle of the astringent material when the product dries in the axilla on evaporation of water into the air or passage into the epidermis, preventing subsequent water of perspiration from permeating thru to activate the astringent. m is results in delayed onset of activity.
~he present invention provides an aqueous antiperspirant c~nposi-tion comprising from about 15 to 25 percent by weight of an astringent ; material and from about 0.5 to 71 percent by weight of a lactate, citrate or tartrate ester of an cilkylene diol or triol.
In a preferred emkodiment, roll-on antiperspirant compositions are provided which comprise about 15 to 25 weight percent of an aluminum or aluminum-zirconium salt and about 0.5 to 71 weight percent of a lactate, citrate, or tartrate ester of an alkylene diol or triol, thereby improving the permeability of moisture through the normally difficultlypermeable coating surrounding the astringent particle.
The incorporation of the esters of the invention into the roll-on formuLations ~rov.ides faster on æ t of antiperspirant activity and higher maKumum efficacy at the 22-hour check point in clinical testiny, probably because the esters have a high dielectric constant, permitting moisture to more readily permeate -the coating around the astringent material. The esters are water so].uble, thereby el.iminating the need for emulsification, dispersing or solubilization. TfliS provides faster onset of activity and yet provides a dr.i.er Eeeling on the skin than with con~entional emollients.
The compositionSar.e nonstaining, less tacky, quick drying, and provide a desirable residual feelO With the proper choice of ingredient~s a nonwhiten-~2~72 ..

iny residue can be ohtained.
The antiperspirant roll-on comr positions contain a citrate, lactate, or tartrate ester of an alkylene diol or triol. r~hese esters include:
1,3-propylene glycol monolactate 1,3-propylene glycol dilactate 1,3-propylene glycol m~nocitrate 1,3-propylene glycol dicitrate 1,3~propylene glycol monotartrate 1,3-propylene glycol ditartrate 1,3-butylene glycol monolactate 1,3-butylene glycol dilactate 1,3-butylene glycol m~nocitrate 1,3-butylene glycol dicitrate 1,3-butylene glycol monotartrate 1,3-butylene glycol ditartrate glycerol monolactate glycerol dilactate glycerol ~onocitrate glycerol dicitrate glycerol monotartrate glycerol ditartrate glyceLol tritartrate, and the lik~.
The lactate esters are preferred becauæ of their more ready availability and ease of manufacture.
Active astrinyents may include ac~leous solutions of alum m um sulfate, al~num chloride, al~Nnum chlorohydrate, l .

or aluminum-zirconium hydroxy chloride. Combinations of aluminum chlorohydrate and al~inum chloride may also be used~
The preferred astringent is aluminum chlorohydra~e.
The esters of -the invention may be used in combina-tion with small amounts (0.5-8 weight percent) of other, more conventional emollients, or functional additives which may be added for reasons other than antiperspirant efficacy, such as thickeners, viscosity stabilizers, ~ragrance solubilizers, opacifiers, etc.
The compositions may also contain ethoxylated fatty alcohols, such as ethoxylated ~tearyl alcohol or ethoxylated stearic acid~ or ethoxylated cetyl or lauryl alcohol, or com-b~nations thereof, containing lO0 to 200 moles of combined ethylene oxide. Those containing high ethylene oxide content tend to be more permeable to moisture, thus further increasing antiperspirant onset and efficacy. The lower ethoxylated com-pounds, i.e., containing about 100 moles of ethylene oxide, are preferred. However, the esters of the invention may be used without the highly ethoxylated materials.
