Abstract

A B S T R A C T
A diaper fastener for use on a disposable diaper having an absorb-ent body and a plastic backing sheet, the fastener comprising a strip of tape folded into a "Z" configuration having contiguous first, second, and third legs, said strip having a front surface and a reverse surface and being coated with an adhesive on the front surface of each of said first and third legs, the front surface of said second leg being free of adhesive, said first leg front surface being in contact with said plastic backing sheet and said third leg front surface being in contact with said second leg front surface thereby forming a subunit comprising said second and third legs, said subunit being releasably secured to said first leg reverse surface.

Description

1~19185Z

Background o~ the Invention This invention relates to dlaper fasteners such as ~¦ are sultable for use on disposable diapers.
! Diaper fasteners which comprlse adhesive tape units ~ have become quite popular in recent years and a number Or fastener constructions have been proposed. One such proposed structure includes first, second, and third portions with the first portion belng adhesively secured to the diaper's con-ventional plastic backing sheet. The second, central portion is arranged so that there ~s no exposed adhesive in that portion, the particular construction employing a second web which overlies the adhe~ive in the second portion, is adhesively secured thereto, and provides a release treated exposed surface. The third portlon ls releasably secured to that exposed surface.
With thls arrangement that exposed surface serves as the "release sheet" to protect the adhesive in the third tape portion from premature contact with other surfaces. The con-struction eliminates the necessity for disposing of a separate release sheet since the web remains in place after the thlrd ii portion is peeled therefrom. The proposed usage of such a ! construction has been on a "C" fold diaper in whlch marglnal ¦ lateral diaper portions are folded inwardly thereby rorming ¦ a folded diaper having a "Cl' shape as viewed end-on. With such ? l a diaper the fastener is exposed for view and the ~astener : ~ 25 ¦ ¦ portions, but for the first portion, flop loose.
;. I, Summary of the Invention il It is a principal ob~ect of the present invention to ~ ¦l provide a fastener of the general type discussed above, and an I ¦ improved diaper-and-fastener combination, which is of improved ~ appearance and operation.
l I

109~852 According ~o the present invention there is provided a diaper fastener for use on a disposable diaper having an absorbent body and a plastic backing sheet, the fastener comprising a strip of tape folded into a "Z" con-figuration having contiguous first, second, and third legs, said strip having a front surface and a reverse surface and being coated with an adhesive on the front surface of each of said first and third legs, the front surface of said second leg being free of adhesive, said first leg front surface being in contact with said plastic backing sheet and said third leg front surface being in contact with said second leg front surface thereby forming a subunit com-prising said second and third legs, said subunit being releasably secured to said first leg reverse surface, said second leg having an opening therethrough, whereby adhesive on said third leg is exposed for contact with said first leg reverse surface thereby releasably securing said subunit to said first leg reverse surface, said opening being centrally located in said second leg, said fastener further including a gripping tab projecting from said third leg.
With the fastener secured to the undersurface of the box pleat flap - a product is provided in which the vast bulk of the fastener itself is entirely hidden from view with only the gripping tab extending beyond the lateral margin of the box pleat flap. It is preferred that the subunit be releasably secured to the first leg in one of two ways. The second leg may be provided with an opening therethrough whereby adhesive on the third leg is exposed for contact with the first leg reverse surface. Alternatively, a spot of hot melt glue may be deposited between the first and second leg reverse ,,j surfaces during the manufacture of the diaper ~and/or fastener) which will quickly set to achieve the desired result but will be small enough that the bond is easily overcome to release the subunit at the desired time.

''' Detailed DescriPtion Or Particular Prererred Embodlments ~eferrlng to the drawln~, a diaper 10 i8 rolded into a ~ox pleat con~iguration havlng rlaps 12-wlth undersurraces 14 ~= and lateral marglns 18. As best seen in the sect~onal vlews Or 20; Figs, 2-5 ? the undersurface 14 o~ the flap 12 is provided by a plastic backing sheet 20. A conventional absorbent body 22 is sandwi2hed between the plastic backing sheet 20 and an lnner , water pervious liner 24.
I The fastener 26 comprises a strip of tape 28 folded ¦ into a ~'Z" confi~uration as presented to the consumer (i.e., as ¦~ shown in F gs. 1, 2, and 5). The three le~s 30, 32, 34 which 1; _3_ orm the "Z" are of substantlally equal length and a gripping ~ta~ 36 is pro~lded and pro~ects rrom third leg 34. A front surface of the strip Or tape 28 (i.e., the upper surface as ; seen in Fig. 4) is coated with an adhesive 38 in the regions corresponding to the flrst and third legs 30, 34. The front llsurface of leg 32 and the entire reverse surface of the tape ; ,,28 are free of adheslve.
- ' Referrlng to Fig. 2, in the folded or "Z" configuration of the fastener 26, the front surfaces of legs 32 and 34 are ln I~contact. The front surface of leg 32, bearing no a,dhesive, may ,¦also be treated with a release agent as ls well known in the llart to provide a releasable bond of reduced strength where the adhesl~e 38 on leg 34 contacts the ~ront surface of leg 32.
IlThe adhesive 38 on leg 34 contacts the front surface Or lee 32.
I!The adhesive 38 on leg 30 ls in contact wlth the surface 14 of ! plastic backing 20 and ~irmly secures the fastener 26 to surface 14. The legs 32, 34 may be viewed as a subunit of the fastener.
'IThis subunit ls itself releasably secured to the reverse sur~ace jif leg 30 to maintain the fastener in a compact but easily ~ 20 extendable configuration prior to use. This ls accompllshed in ; Fig. 2 by the provision Or opening 40 which is centrally located in the second leg 32. This opening exposes a small area of adhesive 38 on the front surface of third leg 34 for contact with the reverse surface of the first leg 30, thereby ""tackingl' the subunit to the first leg 30. (In the alternative embodiment of Fig. 5, the same feature is achieved by provislon of a spot 42 Or hot melt glue which is deposited between the reverse surfaces of the legs 30, 32 during the manufacture of , . . .
,the fastener or of the diaper.) ,.......... . .
.'~ 1l.

' As best seen ln Figs. 1, 2, and 5, the fastener 26 Ills so constructed and so located ln a box pleat dlaper that as ¦!tne dlaper ls presented to the consumer only the samll pro~ect-¦jlng grlppin~ tab 36 ls vlsible. Thls tab is conveniently ! located to be ~rip~ed by the person applying the diaper and pulled ln a directlon perpendlcularly away rrom the lateral ¦edge 18 of the flap 12. As best seen in Fig. 3 this results ln ¦a breaking of the releasable bond which tacks the subunit to flrst leg 30 and, simultaneously, a peeling Or the third leg 34 l~rom the second leg 32. This process leads to the complete extension of the ~astener 26 as sho~ln in Fig. 4. As fully extended the rastener 26 provides the adheslve coated leg 34 for contact with a remote portion of the diaper to secure the diaper to an infant. The non-adheæive leg 32 i5 dlsposed ln the region most likely to contact the infant's skin should the diaper be improperly sized or become twisted or stretched by the ¦infant's movements. There ls-thus a reduced chance of contact ¦lof adhesive 38 with the skin of the infant.
~Jhile particular preferred embodiments have been , . 20 ¦¦ illustrated in the accompanying drawings and described in detail herein, other embodiments are within the scope Or the .
l~invention and the following claims.
