Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
The present invention provides a magnetic board for holding display elements and the like contemporaneously horizontally and/or vertically. The board comprises a plurality of panels made up of respective metal sheets. Each of the metal sheets has a first series of spaced, parallel grooves embossed thereon for receiving display elements therein, and a second series of spaced, parallel grooves embossed thereon for receiving display elements therein. The grooves of the second series are perpendicular to those of the first series and form a grating subdividing the panels by grating nodes having equal center-to-center distances. An arrangement is provided for coupling adjacent panels together In such a board, the signalling elements may be placed in the grooves in horizontal and vertical positions at the same time.

Description

~f~'74~

This invention relates to magnetic boards ~or use as, for example, as programming and statistical analysis aids.
The boards are intended to receive charting strips which are retained magnetically and provide a visable chart.
Known boards usually consist of a plurality of metal panels removably interconnected. Secured to each panel - usually by welding - are parallel metal bars spaced by a required amount from one another. The bars, lying on the outer panel surface, form an array of parallel grooves, wherein parts of magnetic charting strips or elements can be fitted between two adjacent bars. Each bar is moreover subdivided into unit lengths by colored signs, whereby a grating is formed which may be compared, in a sense, to a graph paper, and whereon through the applied charting strips, the required data can be easily read, after having assigned given values to vertical and horizontal lines.
Some shortcomingsare however shown by the known magnetic boards.
First of all the arraying and welding of bars on each panel, and the subsequent subdivision of some bars into equal parts, result in a particularly expensive manufacturing thereof.
Then, the orientation of board can be either horizontal only, or vertical only, depending on the orientation of the panels.
The invention seeks to mitigate the foregoing disadvan-tages.
According to the present invention, there is provided a magnetic board for holding display elements and the like contemporaneously horizontally and~or vertically, the board ~-comprising a plurality of panels made up of respective metal -sheets, each of said metal sheets having a first plurality of spaced, parallel grooves embossed thereon for receiving display elements therein and a second plurality of spaced, parallel grooves embossed thereon for receiving display elements therein, .-`Y

said grooves of said second plurality of grooves beiny perpendicular to those of said first plurality of grooves to form a grating subdividing said panels by grating nodes having equal center-to-center distances; and means for coupling adjacent ones of said panels to one another; whereby display elements may be contempor-aneously placed in the grooves in horizontal and vertical positions.
In a preferred embodiment form of the invention, each -la-B

panel is secured to a plastics frame by hot riveting, each frame being formed with tongues and recesses to enable inter-locking of respective panels.
The structural and functional features of the invention, and the advantages thereof once the known state o~
the art, will be better appreciated from a consideration of the following description of an embodiment form thereof, made with reference to the accompanying drawings, both description and drawings being given as a non restrictive example. In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a portion of a panel made according to the invention, Fig. 2 is an enlarged section, taken on the line II-II
o Figure 1, Fig. 3 is a plan view of the frame for receiving the panel shown in the figures 1 and 2, Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line IV-IV of Figure 3, and Fig. 5, which appears on the same sheet of drawings as Figures 1 and 2, is an enlarged detail, showing how the panels are coupled to one another.
Referring now to drawings, the panel is indicated in its entirety by the numeral 10, and comprises a metal sheet 11 in which a grating of grooves 12, 13 is pressed, the grating comprises mutually perpendicular sèts of parallel equidistant grooves. The distance between grating nodes represents the subdivision of the board into equal parts.
By the pressing of grooves 12, 13, generally truncated-pyramid shaped projections are formed, the top of which are bored, as shown at 15.
The metal sheet 11 is fastened to a rectangular plastics frame, generally designated 16 (see Figs. 3, 4 and 5). Such ~ . , 10741~

fastening is performed by pins 17, extending from the frame 16, and hot-riveted, as shown at 18, in holes of the metal sheet 11.

The sides of frame 16 are L-shaped in section and are formed with tongues 19, 20, extending outwardly from a major side, and a minor side, respectively, as well as with corresponding aper-tures 21, 22 in the remaining two sides. The tongues are addit-ionally provided with holes 23.
In the assembling of a board, the tongues 19, 20 of a panel are inserted into the apertures 21, 22 of an adjacent panel, and locked therein by a retaining pin 2~, inserted into the hole 23 (see Fig~5).
A magnetic charting element as shown at 25 in Fig. 1 may be arranged either horizontally and vertically on the board.
Charting elements or a different type may be fitted in the holes 15 if desired.
While the invention has been described in detail with respect to a now preferred embodiment thereof, it is to be under-stood that various changes and modifications may be made therein.
Thus, for example, the frame on which the metal sheet is fitted, and the connecting means of frame, could be different, without depar~ing from the spirit and scope of the invention~
which is defined in the appended claims.
