Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A novel exercise form or book for an exercise having progressive steps is described, comprising a check sheet; and an exercise sheet, wider than the check sheet, preferably of the same length, wherein the check sheet is superimposable over the exercise sheet hiding an area on the exercise sheet for an exercise to be completed. The check sheet is superimposed over the exercise sheet for an appropriate instruction opposite each completed step of the check sheet. The uncompleted exercise is disposed on the exercise sheet so that each uncom-pleted step in the exercise will be directly under the respective completed step on the check sheet when the check sheet is so superimposed over the exercise sheet. The appropriate instruction is then opposite the respective uncompleted step.
The book or form may be in blank for completion by the teacher into such a book or form.

Description

-~0~36~6 This invention relates to a novel exercise book or ~orm ~or completing exercises on a exercise sheet, wherein the correct answers are provided but are hidden when the exercise is being done, .Such exercise books or forms are used ~y a student to review or apply lessons taught in the class or are used for testing a student's knowledge and markin~ the test by re-ference to the correct answers provided. Some are used ln conjunction with written or printed instructions for self-instruction.

One such form or book consists of exercise sheetscontaining a series of exercises to be done superimposable over and bound with check sheets wider than the exercise sheets, which check sheets each contains an exercise in corr-ected form and check columns,-not less in number than the ex-ercise sheet associated with the check sheet.

The student is able to complete the exercise on the exercise sheet while superimposed over the check sheet so that the exercise in correct form is hidden. He then can dispose the exercise sheets to reveal the correct form for comparison with his answer. If the answer is correct he may place a check in the check column and proceed onto the next exercise. If incorrect he may superimpose the remaining exerclse sheets over the check sheet and attem~t the exercise over a~ain. The process may be repeated until the student correctly does the exercise or exhausts the exercise sheets. His entries in the check columns allow him to see which exercises gave him the mos-t difficulty for further review.

~ xercise sheets have been adapted for use with a permanent form consisting of a sheet with a list of printed directions; and a check sheet with the correct answers to each direction superimposable over and wider than the sheet with the directions; and means for fixing an exercise sheet thereto. The correc-t answers are disposed so that they may be hidden and are directly above the respective direction when the direction sheet is s~r~x~d over the check sheet. The exercise sheet has an area for completing the exercise opposite the respective direction when it is fixed to the permanent form or boo]~ -with the means pro~ided. The directions are hidden when the check sheet is superimposed over the direction sheet.

The student may fix the exercise sheet to the book-let. He then may complete the exercises with the correct answers hidden, referring to the directions or the sheet with printed directions. He ~ay refer to the answers while the .. .. :
exercise sheet is so fixed by superimposing the check sheet over the sheet of directions. The correct answers and dir-ections cannot be seen at the same time without straining, The book or form may be used by different students at diff-erent times.

Some exercise books or forms used for testing are constructed so that they must be mutilated to find the correct answers. These forms are adapted so that the exercise in correct form and the studentls answer can be compared by a checker after mutilating the form with the assurance that the student had not seen the exercise in correct form in the book or form while completing the exercise.

On the other hand, the form or book of my invention comprises, in combination, an exercise sheet and a check sheet with the steps in an exercise, consistiny of a series of ~ro-gressive steps, completed, the check sheet being superimposable over the exercise sheet. The exercise sheet is wider than the check sheet and exposes a written or printed instruction how to perform each step in the exercise opposite each completed step on the check sheet when the check sheet is superimposed over the exercise sheet. The area on the exercise sheet under the check sheet contains incompleted steps of the exercise to be completea so that each incompleted step is opposite the respective instruct-ion on the exercise sheet. There may be a plurality of exercise shee,ts associated with each check sheet superimposable over each other. There may also be one or more further exercise sheets with other incompleted exercises which require the app-lication of the lesson taught by the exercise over which the first set of exercise sheets are superimposable. The further exercise sheets may be wider than the first set of exercise sheets for further instructions, The check sheets and the ex-ercise sheets may be joined into a book form. The check sheet and the exercise sheets may be detachable. For this purpose the exercise and further sheets may have holes disposed to re ceive the sheets into a loose leaf binder~

The form or hook may comprise in combination a plurality of such checks sheets, each of which has associated therewith such exercise sheets, so that each check sheet and associated exercise sheets form a set. The sheets are pre- ' ferably the same length. - ¦

~73~6~

My book or form may be used by the student Eor re-viewing a lesson tauyht in class orally, visually or both, con-sisting of the steps shown on the check sheet~ The student may superimpose the check sheet over the exercise sheet, read the instructions and review the lesson. He then may turn the check sheet over hiding the correct form and comple-te each of the incompleted steps in the exercise after reading the re spective instruction. He may check the check sheet as desired to determine whether he is completing,.or has completed the step or the exercise correctly.

The exercise sheet may be removed ~rom my book or form for use as a test. The marker mav use the check .
sheet to determine whether the exercise has been.done cor-rectly. The form completed by the stud.ent may be kept asa permanent record of the student's acheivement~.

The further exercise sheets may be used by the studentj after reviewing the lesson and completing thç ex-ercise correctly to apply the lesson taught to other exercises, My book or ~orm may be used by a teacher to acc-omodate and encourage the student. ~ slow learner may be giventhe entire form after the lesson has been taught, while a faster learner may be given only the exercise sheets~ A more advanced student may only be given the further exercise sheets, The teacher can provide other sheets of the form or book as the need arises.

If a student has been absent he may be given-forms o~ books with the lessons missed to attempt at home. The lesson may be reviewed at any time.

Blank forms may be provided so that the teacher can prepare his own copy showing the steps of the exercise in completed form on the check sheet, the matter to be com- I
pleted and the instructions opposite each step to be com- j pleted on the exercise sheet. Also he can provide further exercises on further exercise sheets for applying the lesson taught. Thus the teacher can experiment with new progress-ions and with variations of their application.
.... .
The wide application of the form or book will be-come more apparent from the following description of prefer-red embodiements thereof and their operation with reference to the drawings attached hereto wherein:
''' Fig. 1 is a front perspective view of an embodi-ment in book form in an upright positi~n ~; showing a check sheet, exercise sheet and further exercise sheet; and :, .

;~ Fig. 2 is an exploded perspective view oE an embod-iement of a form of my invention consisting of a check sheet; an exercise sheet~
with an incompleted step in a progressive .j :
series of steps of an exercise~and the re-spective instruction; and a further exercise ~ sheet.

: Referring to Fig. 1 check sheet 1 is superimposable over exercise sheet 2. There may be a further exercise sheet ^ 3. If so exercise sheet 2 is superimposable over further exercise sheet 3. Both exercise sheet 2 and further exercise sheet 3 are wider than check sheet 1. All sheets are prefer-~ 3~6 ably the same length and are bound at their left hand margins into a book so that check sheet 1 can be ro-tated about its let hand margin to a position shown by the dotted lines. A single sheet may be folded over to Eorm the check sheet and exercise sheet or further exercise sheet. The check sheet may be blank and adapted to receive an exercise in correct and completed form, containing a series of progressive steps, or it may con-tain such an exercise in correct and completed form as shown~
in Fig. 1. The check sheet 1, and exercise shee-t 2 may have holes 4 adjacent their left hand margin for binding them in a loose leaf binder. Further exercise sheet 3 may be likewise be constructed to be bound in a loose leaf binder.

When the check sheet 1 is superimposed over the exercise sheet 2 an instruction 5 is written or printed opp-osite each step of the exercise.

As can be seen from Fig. 2 completed and correct step 6 of the exercise is shown on check sheet 1 of the set consisting of check sheet 1, exercise sheet 2 and further ex-ercise sheet 3. In the area 7, under the check sheet 1, onexercise sheet 2, only a partly completed step is shown. The instruction with respect to the step appears opposite the partly completed step. When check sheet 1 is superimposed over the exercise sheet so that the partly completed step is directly under the correct completed step the instruction 5 will appear opposite it, as well.

Further exercise sheet 3 in Figs. 1 and 2 con-tains other exercises using the lesson taught an~ may be wider than exercise sheet 2. If it is wider, the area exposed when ex-. '10~^~36~6 ~`
ercise sheet 2 is superimposed over further exercise sheet 3may contain a further instruction such as "NOW TRY THESE" or the like.

There may be more than one exercise sheet 2 associated . - . /
with each check sheet-~ and wider than it. If so they are all superimposable over each other, and as a~group are superinposable directly under the associated check sheet and between different check sheets. There may also be more than one further exercise sheet 3 associated with an exercise sheet or group of exercise sheets. In that case the group of further exercise sheets are ., .
disposable between two different check sheets and directly under the exercise sheet or group of exercise sheets with which they are associated.

.:"
The form or book having the correct completed steps, ; the uncompleted matter and the instructions may be used as an ;:1 aid for teaching a lesson or self-instruction. A teacher in , , .
~ class may teach students orally or visually or both the steps . ~, ,~ in the exercise. An exercise form or book may be handed out
2~, to the students to review the exercise, in class or a home, by ,j ~20 referring to the written or printed instructions and the com-., plet~d matter and then turning over check sheet 1 to reveal ;
!,; the uncompleted steps. The student may attempt to complete the ' !
steps by following the instructions, while the correct answer is hidden from his view. If he has difficulty he may refer to the check sheet by merely superimposing it over the exercise sheet so that the correct steP and appropriate instruction ' register.

,: ~

The teacher may detach an exercise sheet 2 or exercise sheet 3 from the book and hand out to some or all of the students only the exercise sheets. This will encourage the students to .

^`` iO~36~6 ~ -I try to comprehend the lesson from the visual and oral classroom -`~ instruc-tions and attempt to complete it without any review, merely by following the printed or written instructions. It also may be used as a test. The student's attempt may be collected as a . . .
permenent record. The check sheet may be used to mark the test.

The teacher may detach the further exercise sheets 3 and hand it '~ out to faster learners who do not need to review the lesson.
. . !
~''. ' .
If a student has missed work or cannot attend school ~- because of illness or otherwise he may be given exercise books or Eorms with the lessons he has missed for home study so that he will not fall behind in his studies.

, : .
If blank forms or books are ~rovided a teacher may experiment by setting his lessons out in progressive steps on the check sheet in complete and correct form, providing in-structions for each step on the exercise sheet and then turn the check sheet over and opposite each instruction set out the matter for the student to complete opposite each ins-truction.
;,~' Copies may be made and distributed to his students.
,~.......................................... .
The forms will minimize the need for classroom in-struction, allow teachers to Eormulate their lessons in pro-i gressive steps and to encourage students to learn the :Eund-amentals of the lesson.
.,i,l, :
", Although a mathematical construction is shown in the form or book in the Figures it should be apparent that , the form is adaptable to teaching almost any lesson involving a series of progressive steps which can be reduced to writing.
