Abstract

ABSTRACT
A paper roll holder for a paper roll having a cylin-drical core. The holder comprises a frame made from two angulated strap members hinged together at one end. The other ends of the strap members overlap and lock together when the frame members are closed about the hinge to form a quadrangular shape. Cylindrical friction members are non-rotatably mounted on that side of the frame having the overlapped ends to frictionally mount the paper roll thereon.

Description

~7Z~
This invention is directed to new and useful improve-ments in paper roll holders and, in particular, to toilet paper roll holders.
With known paper roll holders, and particularly with toilet paper roll holders, it is a problem to mount the paper roll on the holder in a manner which minimizes free running of the roll in the holder. If the roll is freely mounted in the holder, substantial paper waste can occur through carelessness by the user.
To minimize waste, it has been proposed to employ a paper roll having an elliptical core as shown, by way of example, in U.S Patents 2,582,036 issued January 8, 1952, E.J Hill Inventor; and 2,603,426 issued July 15, 1952, N.A. Hackney Inventor. A frame, on which the roll is mounted, has overlapped plate members on one side receiving the elliptical core of the .per roll. The plate members on the one side of the frame have width substantially equal to the major inner dimension of the elliptical core. The arrangement prevents free running of the roll on the frame. However, a paper roll with an elliptical core is very difficult to turn. Also an elliptical core is more expensive to manufacture than a cylindrical core.
Another solution, attempting to minimize paper waste, has been to employ cylindrical friction members on one side of the frame for mounting within a cylindrical core of a paper roll.
The friction members are sized to just fit freely within the core thereby allowing the roll to easily turn when paper is slowly pulled off, but frictionally limiting turning of the roll when paper is quickly pulled or torn off. U S. Patent 2,944,749, issued July 12, 1960, A.P Maier Inventor, illustrates this type of friction member. This construction does not help minimize waste however whenever the paper is slowly removed. In addition it is difficult to mount a paper roll on this type of holder.

an improved paper roll holder which can be used with cylindri-cal paper roll cores, It is a ~urther purpose of the present invention to provide an improved holder which minimizes paper waste regardless of whether the paper is slowly or quickly removed, It is yet another purpose of the present invention to provide an improved paper roll holder which is relatively simple in construction and operation, and reliable in operation, It is yet another purpose of the present invention to provide an improved holder on which a paper roll can be readily mounted and retained, In accordance with the present invention there is provided a paper roll holder having a frame made up of two -angulated strap members, The frame strap members are hingedly connected together at one end so they can open and close relative to each other, When closed, a quadrangular shaped frame is formed, When opened, a paper roll, having a cylindrical core, can be loaded on one side of the frame, The paper roll normally fits loosely on the one side of the frame, ~owever cylindrical friction members are non-rotatably mounted on the one side of the closed frame, The friction members are resilient and are sized so that the paper roll is frictionally mounted on them, The frame and cylindrical friction members are simple and relati~ely unexpensive in construction and provide a positive brake control on a paper roll mounted thereon at all times, The invention is particularly directed toward a paper roll holder having a frame, which frame comprises a first angulated strap member having first and second sides and a sec-ond angulated strap member having first, second and third sides, The ends of the first sides of the two members are hinged to-gether, The other free ends of the -two members overlap when the members are closed to form a quadrangular shaped frame, ~eans are provided on the second and third sides o~ the first 7Z50~
and second members respectively to lock the sides together when the free ends overlap. Friction means are non-rotatably carried by each of the second and third sides of the first and second members respectively for frictionally receiving a paper roll ; core thereon.
Each friction means comprises a cylindrical member.
The cylindrical member is mounted on the frame side with its circular ends substantially perpendicular to the frame side.
Resilient ribs are provided on the outer cylindrical surface of each friction member, sized for frictionally engag-ing the inner surface of the paper roll core.
The invention will now be described in detail having re~erence to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the paper roll holder frame, in a closed position;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the frame in an open position, Fig. 3 is a plan view of the frame, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the frame carrying the friction members; and Fig. 5 is a cross-section view of the holder with a paper roll mounted thereon.
The paper roll holder 1 of the present invention has a frame 3. The frame 3, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 compris0s a first angulated member 5 and a second angulated member 7. The ~irst ~rame member 5 has a ~irst side 9 and a second side 11.
The sides 9, 11 extend at right angles to each other. The second frame member 7 has ~irst, second and third sides 13, 15, 17, forming a J-shape with sides 13, 17 generally parallel and perpendicular to side 15. Both frame members 5, 7 are made from strap material.
The frame members 5, 7 are hingedly connected together `~ 725~

with a hinge 21. The hinge 21 joins the ends 23, 25 of the first sides 9, 13 of members 5, 7 respectively. The ends 23, 25 can be shaped and rolled to form hinge 21, the rolled ends joined together with a hinge pin 27 The free ends 31, 33 of second and third sides 11, ; 17 of members 5, 7 respectively, overlap when the members 5, 7 are closed about hinge 21 to form a quadrangular shape.
Means are provided for locking the overlapped sides 11, 17 together. The locking means can comprise a vertical slot 37 in third side 17, spaced a short distance back from its free end 33; and a tongue 39, projecting from the free end 31 of second side 11 and bent inwardly to lock into slot 37 when sides 11, 17 overlap.
The second side 11 of first member 5 normally projects inwardly slightly as shown, in exaggerated manner, by the dotted lines 11' on Fig 3. The third side 17 of second member 7 normally projects outwardly slightly as shown, in exaggerated manner by the dotted lines 17'. When sides 11, 17 are overlapped, with side 11 on the oùtside of side 17, they press against each other and remain locked by the spring action o~ the sides.
The first side 13 of seco~nd frame member 7 has a pair - of spaced apart fastening holes 41, ~3 therein. The frame 3 is fastened to a wall "W" or other structure with screws 45, or other fasteners fastened through holes 41, 43 as shown in Fig 5 A hole 47 is provided in third side 17 of frame member 7, aligned with the fastening hole 43 to allow passage of a ~crew-driver to fasten screw 45 through the fastening hole 43 Access to the other fastening hol0 41 is obtained by opening - frame member 5 away from frame member 7 about hinge Zl as shown in Fig. 2 The width "h" on frame sides 11, 17 is substantially less than the inner diameter "d" of a paper roll core 51. paper roll 53, comprising paper 55 wound about core 51 can thus be loosely mounted on overlapped sides 11, 17 of frame 3 if desired. The roll 53 is mounted on frame 3 by first opening frame member 5 away from frame member 7 about pivot 21. The roll 53 is then slipped onto third side 17 of frame member 7 and frame member 5 is moved back to close the frame with frame side 11 slipping into the core 51 to overlap frame side 17 and lock with it within the core 51. When the paper 55 has been used Up9 the empty core 51 can be torn from the holder or the 10 . empty core 51 can be flattened against frame sides 11, 17 and pressure can be applied through the flattened core to unlock --sides 11, 17 and allow frame member 5 to be swung away from frame member 7. Empty core 51 is then removed and replaced by a new paper roll 53.
It is preferred however to frictionally mount paper roll 53 on holder 1 to minimize paper waste and thus, in ac-cordance with the preferred embodiment of the present invention, friction members 61 are provided on frame 3. The friction members 61 are designed to frictionally receive the core 51 of a paper roll 53. The ~riction members 61 preferably comprise a cylindrical member 63 detachably, non-rotatably mounted on each side 11, 17 of frame 3. ~ach cylindrical member 63 i5 mounted to have its circular ends 65 generally perpendicular to sides 11 and 17 and its cylindrical surface 67 generally centrally locate about sides 11, and 17. Cylindrical surface 67 carries ~riction elements 69 thereon. The friction elements : 69 can comprise resilient ribs projecting from sur~ace 67.and extendi.ng longitudinally of cylinder 63. The ribs 69 preferably extend substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis o~ cy-linder 630 The outer diameter "D'7 of friction means 61 is slightly greater than the inner diameter of "d" of core 51.

When the friction members 61 are slipped into core 51 ~rom each il~7Z~

end, ribs 69 bend slightly to provide a friction fit within the core, The friction members 61 are preferably moulded from thermoplastic material, are resilient, which facilitates their mounting within a core and provide the flexibility necessary to permit the locking of the frame members within the core of the paper roll, Slots 71 are provided in the end walls 65 through which sides ll, 17 of the frame slide in order to non-rotatably mount the members 61 on the frame.
The friction members 61 lightly, frictionall`y grip the paper roll so it is not freely mounted on the frame.~ When the paper is used up from a roll, the core 51 is broken to provide access to the lock to unlock frame members 5, 7 from each other so they can be opened and the broken empty core removed from t~em. Friction members 61 may slide off with the core parts as well but they are easily removed from the used core parts and remounted on the frame members ready to receive a new paper roll.
The friction members 61 are quite inexpensive to man-u~aoture and thus can be easlly replaced lf lost or d~maged.
