Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A warning signal holder comprising a telescopic column adapted at its top to receive a warning device. A
suction cup is at the bottom of the column. The interior of the cup communicates with the interior of the telescopic column. Extension of the column when the suction cup is in contact with a surface withdraws air from the suction cup so that air pressure on the exterior of the cup can act to fix the cup and thus the holder in a desired location. The holder has means to maintain the telescopic column in an extended position.

Description

This invention relates to a warning signal holder and, in particular, a holder for a warning light.
Such lights are well known and are used, parti- ;-cularly, to provide a warning at night of road work. They can also be used as a warning to show a parked car or truck particularly if the car or truck has broken down and is parked in an unexpected place. The lights typically include a battery and a flashing light, usually amber, that is clearly visible in most weather conditions.
The existing lights are simple frameworks usually `
vividly marked to make them even more visible. However, as these lights simply stand on their own, they can easily be knocked over either inadvertently or by vandals. They can, ;
of course, be easily stolen.
The present invention seeks to provide a warning signaL that can be positively located on a surface, in particular, on a road surface.
Accordingly, in a first aspect, the present invention is a warning signal holder comprising a telescopic column adapted at its top to receive a warn-ing device, a suction cup at the bottom of the column, the interior of the cup communicating with the interior of the telescopic column whereby extension of the column when the suction cup is in ~-contact with a surface withdraws air from the suction cup so :,, ~ that~air pressure on the exterior of the cup can act to fix .1 ~; the cup and thus the holder in a desired location, and means to maintain the telescopic column in an extended position.
In a preferred embodiment the warning signal is a r,~ : lamp and the holder includes a compartment to receive a ~ power source, usually a battery, for the lamp.

An embodiment of the invention is illustrated, merely by example, in the drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a general view of a warning light - holder according to the present invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional view through the holder of Figure 1.
The drawings illustrate a warning signal holder comprising a telescopic column adapted at its top to receive a warning device in the form of a lamp 2. The lamp 2 is provided with an integrally formed collar 4 provided with an internal thread 6 engaging with a corresponding thread 8 on the exterior of a hollow cylinder lO. The attachment of the lamp 2 to the cylinder 10 is, in fact, conventional and does not form a part of the present invention. The illustrated threads 6 and 8 may be replaced by equivalent locating methods known in the art. These includes the use of set screws or a simple twist collar. The lamp 2 is also pro-vided with switch means to permit it to flash on and off.
Such a flashing switch is conventional and is not shown in the drawings.
- In the illustrated preferred embodiment a piston 12 is formed integral with the cylinder lO. Piston 12 moves within a hollow column 14. The piston 12 is provided with rings 16 to ensure that it is a gas-tight fit within the hollow column 14. At the bottom of the hollow column 14 there is a suction cup 18. The interior of the suction cup ~; 18 communicates with the interior of the hollow column 14.
In the illustrated embodiment, the suction cup 18 is of a flexible material with a lip 20 of an extremely flexible : 30 material to permit the formation oi a air-tight seal.
- 2 -.' , '1-, - . : . , . . ~

Although not shown in the drawings, the lip 20 may also have small cups on its lower surface to facilitate initial location of the device. These cups are also of an extremely flexible material.
There are means to maintain the telescopic column in an extended position. In the illustrated drawings these means comprise pins 22. Pins 22 extend through the external -cylinder 10, through clear holes 24. The pins 22 extend ~j through holes 26 in the hollow column 14 and through a ~, 10 hole 28 in the piston 12. Desirably, the system is such that the holder is tamperproof. For example, the pins 22 may be provided with a hole (not shown) at one end to ~` receive a lock to prevent removal of pin 22. Pin 22 has a handle 29 to facilitate its positioning and removal.
The hollow cylinder 10 is formed with a compart-~¦ ment 30 at its top. Compartment 30 is to hold a power ;1 source, usually a battery for the flashing lamp 2. Compart-~l ment 30 may extend into the piston 12. Cylinder 10 is also 'I :
; formed with hand grips 32 at its lower end.
The device according to the present invention is ~; normally stored with the pins 22 drawn outwardly so that the -cylinder 10 and piston 12 move downwardly in the hollow ,~ column 14 until the hand grips 32 are adjacent the upper ,~, surface of the suction cup 18. To locate the lamp in position the lamp is placed in the required position. The l~ suction cup 18 is pressed into position on the required i~ surface, for example, it may be held in position by the ,~ feet. The hand grips 32 are gripped by hand and the cylinder 10 moved upwardly until the pins 22 can be engaged with holeæ 24, 26 and 28. The effect of lifting the hand grips ~ ~ .

' ,., 106267~

32 upwardly is to move the piston 12 upwardly within the hollow column 14 thus reducing the pressure within the column. Air pressure acting downwardly on the flexible walls of the cup 18 thus forces the suction cup against the surface on which the lamp has been placed and retains the -lamp in place by suction. With a smooth surface generally it will be necessary only to lift the cylinder 10 upwardly and to engage pins 22 in the lower holes 26, that is the holes 26 closest to the suction cup 18. However, if the : 10 surface is rougher the cylinder 10 may be raised upwardly until the pins 22 engage in the topmost holes 26, that is the holes 26 nearest to the lamp 2.
~ Once the column has been located, the switch can .! be operated and the lamp 2 then flashes a warning. -To remove the lamp, the pins 22 are and the cylin~
der 10 moves downwardly to increase the air pressure within the suction cup 18. The reduction of the relative external pressure in this way means that the cup 18 can be released from the surface and the warning lamp placed in storage until required again. In this matter, it should be noted ;, that the telescopic form of the warning lamp means that it takes less space in storage than the prior art devices.
- The device of the present invention may be made , wholly of plastic. Nylon or some similar wear-resistant weather-resistent plastic is appropriate. However, the 'i~
device may also be made of metal. Clearly the suction cup 18 must be of a flexible material, by example natural or ~ synthetic rubber. The lip 20 may be of a closed-cell, !~
highly flexible synthetic foam.
.
; 30 Although a lamp 2 has been shown, it will be appreciated that the lamp can be replaced by any other signal, for example, a siren.
