Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
The present invention provides a laminated packing material comprising a base layer and a plastic layer to each side thereof, the adhesive power between one of the said plastic layers and the base layer is such that the plastic layer becomes detached from the base layer when a package manufactured from the packing material is subject to a deformation.

Description

~.C358~
The present invention relates to a lamina~ed packing material comprising a base layer and plastic layers applied to both sides as well as a package formed therefrom.
It is known that packing containers can be manufactured from laminated material, and such material is used particularly frequently in the manufacture of packing containers of the disposable type for liquid filling material. The laminated material comprises a relatively thick base layer and plastic layers applied to both sides thereof. The base layer, which may consist of paper, provides for the formation of a sturdy pack-ing container and the plastic layer on the inside provides the actual impervious container. The plastic layer situated on the outside serves as a protection for the package and to gi~e an attractive outward appearance.
Owing to the relatively thick and rigid base layer, a deformation, which may arise e.g. owing to a packing container being dropped or being subjected to a mechanical action in some other manner, frequently causes the packing container to start leaking. This is a problem in particular in larger packing containers, not only because owing to their weight these are subjected to stronger impact when they are dropped, but also because the size makes necessary a laminated material with specially strong and rigid base layer, which is broken at sharp angles, so that the inner layer too is torn.
The type of laminated material increasingly used at present, which comprises a base layer of foamed plastic with plastic layers applied on both sides, is especially rigid owing to its beamlike construction and permits great stresses without breaking, but when the stresses exceed the maximum limit a break occurs very violently and produces sharp folding lines which almost without exception cause the inner plastic layer to split.
Thus the packing containers which are manufactured ~5~35~

from laminated material of the abo~ementioned type all have the disadvantage that on being subjected to mechanical action or deformation they have little resistance against leakage.
This disadvantage can be overcome by makiny the base layer in the laminated packing material less rigid or thinner, but this brings with it the undesirable effect that the packing containers manufactured from the material will be less sturdy.
It also limits the size of package which can be manufactured rom the material.
The present invention overcomes the aforementioned disad~antages and provides a laminated material for the manufac-ture of a packing container which allows even strong impact and deformations to occ~r without leakage of the package.
According to the present invention a laminated packing material of the type heretofore described has the characteristic that the adhesive power between one of the said plastic layers and the base layer is adapted so that the plastic layer becomes detached from the base layer when the package manufactured from the packing material is subject to a deformation.
In a particular embodiment of the present invention the adhesi~e powar between the base layer and the plastic layer for facing towards the inside of the package is appreciably less than the adhesive power between the base layer and the plastic layer for facing towards the outside of the package.
The laminated packing material in accordance with the invention permits a simple manufacture of packing containers which can withstand a strong deformation without leakage, since on deformation of the packing container the inner layer of the laminate detaches itself from the adjoining layer and forms an inner container which is wholly or partly freed from the adjoin-ing layer.

-~5~Sl;P~

The present invention will be further illustrated byway of the accompanying drawing, which schematically and on an enlarged sectional scale shows a part of a packing material in accordance with one embodiment of the invention.
The packing material is manufacturedwholly from plastics and comprises a central base layer 1 of foamed polystyrene and layers 2 and 3 of homogeneous plastic, e.g. polystyrene, applied on both sides of the same. The thickness of the central layer is O,5-2 mm and the thickness of the outer plastic layers 2 and 3 is approx. 0,1 mm.
The packing material in accordance with the invention is manufactured by conventionally extruding the foamed plastic layer 1, whereupon the two homogeneous plastic layers 2 and 3 are applied by an extrusion process to the side surfaces of the foamed plastic layer 1 in such a manner that the desired adhesion is obtainedbetween the layers. The desired weaker adhesion between the base layer 1 and the homogeneous plastic layer 3, which after the manufacture of the packing container is to form the inner impervious layer of the container, is achieved in that during the application of the homogeneous layer 3 the temperature of the extruded plastic is controlled so that an appropriate adhesive power is obtained.
When the packing material in accordance with the present invention is used for the manufac~ure of packing containers it can be processed in the conventional manner, and there is no need to pay any special regard to the particular properties of the packing material. This means that the packing containers manufac-tured from the packing material can be of the conventional type and bemanufactured from packing material in the form of sheets or webs.
~ hen a packing container, which is manufactured from the material in accordance with the present invention is subjected ~l~585~

to a mechanical action, e.g. the pressing in of a corner, the base layer 1 will be pressed together and be bent into a sharp crease. Owing to the weakened adhesive power between the inner, impervious layer 3 and the base layer 1, the inner layer 3 will become detached from the base layer 1 at the damaged place and, as a result, retain its tightness.
The invention thus makes it possible to manufacture by means of simple conventional methods a laminated packing material which, when it is used for the manufacture o packing containers for e.g. liquid filling material, enables such containers to withstand a strong deormation without any leakage.
