An absorbent article includes a liquid permeable cover, a deflector material and an absorbent structure disposed between the cover and the deflector material. The absorbent structure includes a retention zone having a density gradient of at least two dimensions and a protective zone having a portion having a density below a minimum density gradient density in the retention zone. The retention zone may be defined in the first region of the absorbent structure having a first base weight and a protection zone may be defined in the second region of the absorbent structure having a second base weight which is greater than the first base weight.
