Abstract

A semi-submersible vessel 10, adapted to withstand the lifting stroke, which includes a plurality of support columns 16, each having an upper end 19 and a lower end 23. A cover 39 is interconnected between the plurality of support columns 16, in places on the columns 16, close to the upper ends 19 of them. Cover 39 is a crate-like structure. An annular pier 43 is connected to the plurality of support columns 16, in locations close to the lower ends 23 of each of the columns 16. Each support column 16 has a longitudinal axis 29, which is tilted upwards and inwards, from annular pier 43, to cover 39 and the longitudinal axis being oriented substantially radially, from a central point 13 of the vessel 10. A column tilt angle of the support columns 16 is approached by at least , five degrees from the vertical. Ring pier 43 is rectangular in shape and, depending on one variation, is substantially square in shape, with portions of corner piers 49, interconnected through elongated pier portions 56. The ring shaped square pier has a center line 73, intersecting central points 79 of cross sections taken vertically 76 from the square shaped pier 43. The elongated pier portions 56 comprise four crate-shaped structures 59, each having a cross-sectional configuration, taken vertically, substantially on four sides.
