<EMI ID=2.1>
<EMI ID=3.1>
<EMI ID=4.1>
<EMI ID=5.1>
<EMI ID=6.1>
CYCLE OF WHICH AT LEAST THE WHEELBASE IS VARIABLE
CYCLE OF WHICH AT LEAST THE WHEELBASE IS VARIABLE.
The present invention relates to a cycle, such
as a motorcycle, bicycle or tricycle with a steerable front wheel, the wheelbase of which is at least variable.
We know that, on the one hand, the longer the wheelbase
cycle is important the more this cycle is stable in a straight line and, on the other hand, the more the wheelbase of a cycle
is reduced the more this cycle is manageable on winding routes. We also know that the greater the chase of the cycle, the more neutral the direction of the cycle and the more it tends to return to neutral.
For cycles and in particular motorcycles, their wheelbase and hunting are therefore determined according to their use.
So that the characteristics of a motorcycle, namely its wheelbase and hunting, can be modified according to a particular use, for example its adaptation to the route of a given circuit, we
has already thought about making its wheelbase and hunting adjustable. This way of doing things, however, has the disadvantage that once the wheelbase and hunting are set and the choice of said characteristics is again a compromise between good stability in a straight line and good handling in curves.
The object of the invention is to remedy this drawback and to provide a cycle in which either the wheelbase, or the wheelbase and hunting vary according to
the position of the handlebars, that is to say that either the wheelbase, or the wheelbase and the flush, on the one hand, decrease when the handlebars are moved apart, to turn, by
its neutral position, one way or the other, so
to make the cycle more manageable in curves and, on the other hand, increase when the handlebars are brought back to their neutral position in order to make the cycle more stable in a straight line. In addition to this advantage, which is particularly important, the cycle according to the invention also offers the advantage of having, on a curve, a reduced plunging of the front fork, hence enhanced grip of the
rear-wheel drive and in some forms
of achievement, to be slightly understeer.
To this end, according to a first embodiment of the invention, the cycle comprises cores arranged to modify the position of the axis of the fork supporting the front wheel of the cycle relative to the frame of the latter, in order to reduce the 'wheelbase of the cycle, when the handlebars are moved, in one direction or the other, from its neutral position.
According to the invention, the axis of the fork is distinct from the pivot axis of the steering and parallel to the latter, the above-mentioned means being arranged so that the axis of the fork, on which the handlebar is mounted and by ratio at which the handlebar is fixed, describes, when said handlebar is moved from its neutral position, in one direction or the other, a cylindrical surface having as its axis the pivot axis of the direction and situated on either side of the longitudinal median plane of symmetry of the cycle in which the pivot axis of the direction is included.
According to a second embodiment of the invention, the aforementioned means for modifying the position of the axis of the fork relative to the frame of the cycle are arranged so as to reduce the wheelbase
cycle and flush it when the handlebars are moved, in one direction or the other, from its neutral position.
According to one embodiment of the invention, the axis of the fork and the pivot axis of the steering are distinct and intersecting, the aforementioned means being arranged so that the axis of the fork, on which the handlebar is mounted and with respect to which the handlebar is fixed, describes, when said handlebar is moved from its neutral position, in one direction or the other, a conical surface having as its axis the pivot axis of the direction, for vertex the meeting point of the fork axis and of the steering pivot axis and situated on either side of the longitudinal median plane of symmetry of the cycle in which the steering pivot axis is included.
According to another embodiment of the invention, the axis of the fork and the pivot axis of the steering are combined, the pivot axis of the steering being mounted in a steering column so that the fork can pivot freely in said column and around this axis under the action of the handlebars fixed relative to said axis, the steering column being articulated on the frame so as to
that it can pivot about an axis perpendicular to the longitudinal median plane of symmetry of the cycle so that the steering pivot axis moves in this plane, means, carried by the frame and cooperating with the column
direction, being provided to cause pivoting
of the steering column and arranged to be actuated by the handlebars, on the one hand, in order to reduce the wheelbase
and flushing the cycle, when it deviates from its neutral position, in one direction or the other and, on the other hand, in order to increase the wheelbase and flushing the cycle when the handlebars are brought back towards its neutral position.
Other details and features of the invention will emerge from the description of the drawings.
annexed to this memorandum and which illustrate,
by way of nonlimiting examples, particular embodiments of the cycle according to the invention.

Figure 3 is a perspective view, partially broken, illustrating the means used in the motorcycle illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, to change the position of the axis of the front wheel fork with respect to the cycle frame when the handlebars are moved from its neutral position.
Figures 4 to 6 are views similar to Figures 1 to 3 and show a motorcycle with variable wheelbase and variable hunting depending on the position of the handlebars.
Figure 7 is a view similar to Figure 6 and illustrates a variant of the means shown in said Figure 6. Figure 8 is a partial schematic view, in elevation, illustrating a variant of the two embodiments of the motorcycle, according to invention shown in Figures 4 to 7. Figure 9 is a schematic plan view corresponding to Figure 8.
In the different figures, the same notations
of reference designate identical or analogous elements.
The motorcycle according to the invention and which is illustrated in FIGS. 1 to 3 has a variable wheelbase and a constant c-width depending on the position of the handlebars 1, the wheelbase being maximum when the handlebars are in neutral position and therefore when the motorcycle travels in a straight line, which ensures good stability, this wheelbase decreasing when the handlebars are moved in one direction or the other from this neutral position, which makes the motorcycle more maneuverable in curves. To obtain this variation in wheelbase, the motorcycle comprises means 2 arranged to modify, under the action of the handlebars, the position of the axis 3 of the fork 4, which. supports the front wheel 5 and the handlebars 1, relative to the frame 11 of the motorcycle. In the embodiment of the motorcycle illustrated in the figures
1 to 3, the axis 3 of the fork 4 is distinct from the pivot axis 6 of the steering and is parallel to this axis 6.
The aforementioned means 2 are arranged so that the axis 3 of the fork 4, on which the handlebar 1 is mounted and relative to which said handlebar and the fork 4 supporting the hub 8 of the front wheel 5 are fixed, describes, when the handlebar 1 is moved from its neutral position in a
direction or the other and by reaction on the ground of the front wheel pushed a cylindrical surface of trace 9 (figure 2) having for axis the pivot axis 6 of the direction and for radius the distance separating the axis 3 from the fork of this axis 6, this cylindrical surface being situated on either side of the longitudinal median plane of symmetry, of trace 10, of the motorcycle, the pivot axis 6 of direction being situated in the median plane 9. We see in Figures 1 and 2 that when the handlebar 1 is turned to bring the front wheel 5 in 5 ', the axis of the fork moves in 3', the hub 8 in 8 'and the wheelbase e is reduced to e ', the chase c remaining constant as well as <EMI ID = 1.1>
The aforementioned means 2 comprise, fixed to the frame 11, two superimposed and coaxial housings 12, joined in
a steering box 13, the axis of which coincides with the aforementioned axis 6, two discs 14 coaxial with said housings 12 and mounted in the latter by means of ball bearings 15 so as to be able to rotate freely around their axis which constitutes the pivot axis 6 of the steering and a shaft 16, the axis of which is distinct from
<EMI ID = 2.1>
constitutes the axis 3 of the fork 4. This shaft 16 is supported by the discs 14 and is immobilized relative to the latter. The handlebar 1 and the fork 4 are fixed on this shaft 16 so that, when the handlebar is in the neutral position, the axis of the shaft 16 is located in the longitudinal median plane of symmetry 10 of the motorcycle and the hub 8 of the front wheel 5 is perpendicular to this median plane 10.
The means 2 are advantageously arranged so that
the distance separating the axis 3 of the fork from the pivot axis 6 of the steering is adjustable, in order to be able to choose the characteristics of the steering of the motorcycle.
To do this, the discs 14 have perforations 17 regularly distributed along their circumference at different distances from the axis 6, the shaft 16 being of course fixed in the corresponding perforations of the discs which are equidistant from the axis 6.
The means 2 can also be arranged, in a manner known per se, even as the position of the housing
steering 13 or, so as to be able to choose the wheelbase and the flush of the motorcycle with the handlebars in neutral position, adjustable relative to the frame 11 and in the longitudinal median plane of symmetry 10
of the motorcycle.
The motorcycle according to the invention and which is illustrated in FIGS. 4 to 9 has a variable wheelbase and
hunting c variable depending on the position of the handlebar 1, the wheelbase and hunting being maximum when the handlebars are in neutral position and therefore when the motorcycle travels in a straight line, which ensures good stability, these wheelbase and hunting reducing when
the handlebars are moved in one direction or the other from its neutral position, which in particular makes the motorcycle much more maneuverable in a winding course. To obtain these wheelbase variations e and hunting c, the motorcycle comprises means 2 which modify, when
the handlebar is moved, in one direction or the other, from its neutral position, the position of the axis 3 of the fork 4.
In the embodiments illustrated respectively in FIGS. 4 to 6 and in FIG. 7, the axis 3 of the fork 4 and the pivot axis 6 of the direction are distinct and intersecting. Said means 2 are arranged so that the axis
3 of the fork 4, on which the handlebar 1 is mounted and relative to which this handlebar and the fork 4 supporting the hub 8 of the front wheel 5 are fixed, describes, when the handlebars are moved from their neutral position in a
up or down and by reaction on the ground of the front wheel pushed, a conical surface, of trace 18
(Figure 5), having as its axis the pivot axis 6 of the steering, for the vertex the meeting point 19 of the axis
3 of the fork 4 and the axis 6. This conical surface is located on either side of the longitudinal median plane of symmetry 10 of the motorcycle in which the pivot axis 6 of the steering is included. It can be seen in FIGS. 4 and 5 that when the handlebar 1 is turned to bring the front wheel 5 into 5 ′, the axis 3 of the fork 4 moves in 3 ′, the hub 8 of the wheel 5 into 8 ′ while the wheelbase e is reduced to e ', the chase c being
<EMI ID = 3.1>
These means 2 comprise, fixed to the frame 11, two housings 12 and 12 'superposed and coaxial, united in a steering box 13, the axis of which coincides with the axis 6, two discs 14 and 14' coaxial with said housings 12 and 12 ′ and whose lateral surface 20 is in the form of a spherical segment, mounted in these housings via
ball bearings 15 so as to be able, on the one hand, to rotate freely in said housings around their
axis which constitutes the pivot axis 6 of direction and,
on the other hand, oscillate freely in said housings 12 and 12 'around the center of the spherical segments. The means 2 also include a shaft 16 whose axis is distinct from the axis 6 of the discs 14, intersecting with respect to this axis
6 in the center 19 of the spherical segment forming the lateral surface 20 of the disc 14, and which constitutes the axis 3 of the fork 4. This shaft 16 is supported by the discs 14
and 14 'and immobilized relative to the latter. The handlebar 1 and the fork 4 are fixed on said shaft 16 so that, when the handlebar is in neutral position, the axis of said shaft 16 is located in the longitudinal median plane of symmetry 10 of the motorcycle and the means
8 of the front wheel is perpendicular to this median plane.
It is obvious that the discs 14 and 14 ', shown in the drawings of different diameters, could
be of equal diameters. The same result would also be obtained if the discs 14 and 14 'of different diameters were reversed.
The means 2 are advantageously arranged so that
<EMI ID = 4.1>
6 steering is variable so you can choose the characteristics of the steering of the motorcycle. In
in this case, the disc 14 has an axial perforation 17 while the disc 14 'has perforations 17' regularly distributed along its circumference at different distances from its axis, the shaft 16 being
disposed in the perforation 17 of the disc 14 and one of the perforations 17 'as desired of the disc 14'. As specified above, the position of the steering box 13 can also be adjusted relative to the frame 11.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figure 7, the means 2 comprise, fixed to the frame 11, two housings 12 and 12 'independent of each other. These housings are superimposed and coaxial, their axis being located in
the longitudinal median plane of symmetry 10 of the motorcycle.
Two discs 14 and 14 ', coaxial with said housings
and whose lateral surface 20 is in the form of a spherical segment, are mounted in these housings via
ball bearings 15 to be able, on the one hand, to rotate freely in said housings 12 and 12 'around their axis which constitutes the pivot axis 6 of the directi-on and, on the other hand, to oscillate freely in the housings around the center of the spherical segments 20. The disc 14 carries a shaft 16 which is coaxial with it
<EMI ID = 5.1>
is parallel to the axis of the disc and offset from it. The handlebar 1 is fixed to the shaft 16 and the fork is fixed to the shaft 16 'and to a piece 21 fixed relative to the handlebar 1 so that, when the handlebar is
in the neutral position, the pivot axis 6, of the steering and the axis 3 of the fork 4 are located in the longitudinal median plane of symmetry 10 of the motorcycle.
So that the distance between the axis of the tree
16 'from the axis of the disc 14', can be adjusted,
the latter has, as described above, perforations coaxial with the disc and located at different distances from the axis of the latter, the shaft 16 'being immobilized in the chosen perforation. To choose the wheelbase and the flush of the motorcycle with the handlebars in neutral position, the housings 12 and 12 'are assembled to the frames by threaded rods 22 which make it possible to adjust the distances which separate them from said frame, nuts 23 being provided. to immobilize said threaded rods in the selected position.
In the embodiment illustrated in the figures
8 and 9, the axis 3 of the fork 4 and the pivot axis 6 of
management are confused. The pivot axis 6 is mounted in a steering column 13 so that the fork 4 can pivot freely in the column 13, around the axis 6 under the action of the handlebar 1 which is fixed relative to this axis 6. The steering column 13 is articulated on the frame 11 about an axis 24 perpendicular to the longitudinal median plane of symmetry 10 of the motorcycle so that the pivot axis 6 of the steering can
move in this plane 10.
Means 25, which are carried by the frame 11 and which cooperate with the steering column 13, are provided to cause the latter to pivot around the axis 24 and arranged to be actuated by the handlebar 1 for, from a hand, reduce wheelbase and chase
<EMI ID = 6.1>
te from its neutral position and, on the other hand, increase the wheelbase and hunting and reduce the angle c <when the handlebar 1 is returned to its neutral position. These means
25 include, for example, a ball joint 26 mounted
on a shaft 27, fixed to the steering column 13, so that its center is located in the aforementioned median plane 10 and at a distance from the axis 24 and a bar 28 having a housing 29, for the ball 26, the axis is located in the plane 10. The bar 28 is guided in the frame 11 of the motorcycle so that it can be moved, along its longitudinal axis included in the plane 10, thanks to
an electric motor 30 fixed to the frame and driving a pinion 31 meshing with a rack 32 formed on
the bar 28. The electric motor 30 is energized by contactors fixed relative to the frame and controlled by the movements of the handlebar 1 when it departs
or approaches its neutral position.
It should be understood that the invention is in no way limited to the embodiments described and that many modifications can be made to these without departing from the scope of this patent.
