Description
140-Mbit/s-Signalen in Breibandkommunikationssystemen", Elektrisches Nachrichtenwesen, Vol.58, No 4, 1984, pp.450 etc.
suivant l'invention;
<EMI ID=1.1>
<EMI ID=2.1>
INTEGRATED COMMUNICATION SYSTEM
The present invention relates to a system for the distribution of digital television signals.
as set out in the preamble to the claim.
A distribution system of this type is mentioned in an article by D. Bôttle, "Vermittlung von
140-Mbit / s-Signalen in Breibandkommunikationssystemen ", Elektrisches Nachrichtenwesen, Vol.58, No 4, 1984, pp.450 etc.
The object of the invention is to improve such a distribution system so that it is suitable
for other advantageous applications.
According to the invention, this object is achieved by the characteristic of the claim. Such other signal sources are for example sources of other distribution services, preferably programs
radio, or interactive dialogue systems, for example for video telephony. Such mixed cabling of the inputs of the switching network is particularly advantageous when, during a transient introduction phase, at least part of the services offered is used by only a few subscribers. In this case, it may certainly be advantageous to distribute the signals of the narrower band radio programs also through the switching network suitable for television signals.
When the distribution service is further extended, the modules used to distribute the narrowband services can also be used for the distribution of television programs, while a separate switching network for narrowband signals is only necessary when the capacity reaches a later stage. The same applies if subscribers to the video telephone must
be connected to another distribution system. Signals from video telephone subscribers are sent to additional inputs on the switching network. The outgoing video-telephone signals are taken from the outputs of the distribution system. In addition, trunk lines from video-telephone offices
or to these, or other similar distribution systems must then be connected to other inputs
and exits. When the number of video telephone subscribers increases, another similar switching network may
be added which has more inputs than outputs and thus acts as a concentrator, being used to concentrate the paths coming from video-telephone subscribers. The outputs of this additional switching network are then connected
to other inputs of the first switching network.
If the distribution system is extended to allow the distribution of additional television programs
the modules of this second switching network can also be used.
Other features of the present invention will become apparent from the following description
of preferred embodiments of the invention to be read
in conjunction with the drawings in which:
Fig. 1 shows a distribution system
according to the invention;
Fig. 2 shows a block diagram
(Fig. 2a) and in symbolic form (Fig. 2b) of an element of
switching used in a following distribution system
the invention; and
Fig. 3 shows a switching network in
a distribution system according to the invention.
The distribution system according to the invention shown in FIG. 1 will first be described with regard to the known elements.
The heart of the distribution system is a
broadband switching network 10 which is a network
space division switch. It has a plurality of inputs E11 to E1n and a plurality of outputs
A1m and it is designed so that each of the outputs A11 to A1m can be simultaneously connected to any
<EMI ID = 1.1>
can be connected to the same input at the same time.
The output of a television program source 11a to
11n is connected to each of the inputs E11 to E1n.
As used herein, a "television program source" means any system capable of providing a signal.
digital television. A "television signal" is
any video signal with an associated and intended sound signal
to distribution to the public. For each of the subscribers connected to the distribution system, there is a unit of subscriber lines 12a to 12m. Each of these units of
subscriber lines 12a to 12m has one of its inputs connected
at the corresponding output A11 to A1m of the switching network
10. The individual contacts of the switching network 10 are controlled from a control unit 14 by a control bus 15 according to the programs that the individual subscribers wish to receive. To this end, the control unit is connected to a control output of each of the units
of subscriber lines 12a to 12m. Each of these
is connected to the associated subscriber by a bidirectional transmission path. In the direction from the distribution system to the subscriber, (at least) the selected television program is transmitted; in the opposite direction, i.e. from the subscriber to the distribution system, (at least)
the signals for selecting the desired program are transmitted. It is also known to connect the subscriber line units 12a to 12m to other systems :; 50 in either direction. Such additional systems are, for example, telephone desks, video-telephone offices and sources of broadcast programs.
radio.
The improvement of this distribution system according to the invention will now be described also with the aid of FIG. 1.
According to the invention, the switching network
10 has other entrances to which other kinds of
signal source are connected. A possibility that
stands for a distribution system is the simultaneous distribution of radio programs. In the example shown, different sources of radio programs 22a to 22k
are connected to other inputs E21 to E2k of the switching network 10. In the simplest case, the programs
can be transmitted to individual subscribers
<EMI ID = 2.1>
subscribers can then switch between receiving a radio program and receiving a television program. However, since it is easily possible
to transmit a radio program and a television program simultaneously to the subscriber by the same line, in the example shown in FIG. 1, an additional outlet
A21 to A2m is provided for each subscriber. Each of these outputs is also connected to an additional input
of each of the subscriber line units 12a to 12m. Each of the subscriber line units 12a to 12m must then include a service multiplexer which combines the signals coming
of the selected television program source and
from the selected radio program source and all other signals from other systems 50 into a composite signal which is transmitted to the subscriber.
The switching network 10 can also operate for the additional purpose of switching video telephone signals. To accomplish this, the lines from video telephone subscribers and other systems serving
to switch video-telephony calls are connected, directly or indirectly, to additional inputs E31 to E3j of the switching network 10. Also in this case, it is possible to connect the lines going to video-telephone subscribers to those outputs A11 to A1m which are allocated to subscribers with a video-telephony service. A switch should then be made again at the subscriber station. In the example shown, however, additional outputs A31 to A3j are provided for this purpose for the switching network 10. Through additional outputs A41 to A4h and an outgoing trunk connection 32, a remote video-telephone office is connected.
For the example shown in Fig. 1, video-telephony calls arriving on an incoming long distance junction 31 are sent to a concentrator 30. The latter is a switching network which is constituted by the same switching elements as the switching network 10 but which, unlike that -this has more inputs than outputs. It is also controlled by the control unit 14 via an additional control bus 33. The data required to control video-telephony calls received by the incoming long distance junction 31 are supplied from the concentrator 30 to the control unit 14 by a signaling channel 34.
Fig. 2a shows a switching element 40 which forms the basis of both the switching network 10 and
from concentrator 30. It has 16 inputs and 16 outputs.
A switching matrix K allows connections from any input to any output. The command ensures that the inputs can be connected
to each of the outputs only one at a time, but it is also possible to connect any input to two or more outputs. In addition, the switching element
40 has 16 extension inputs, each of which is associated with an output. Via an EK extension matrix, a path can be established between an extension input and the associated output.
Fig. 2b shows a symbol by which the switching element 40 described with the aid of FIG. AE is shown in Fig. 3.
Fig. 3 shows an advantageous structure of a switching network in a broadband distribution system, particularly the switching network 10 of the system of FIG. 1. In the simplest case, this network consists of a driver 41 for the bus, a bus termination
42, a bus 43 between the bus driver 41 and the termination
bus 42 and a plurality of switching elements 40 whose inputs are connected to bus 43. The extension inputs of these switching elements are not connected. To extend the switching network, an additional configuration of this type can be used in which the extension inputs of the individual switching elements 40 are connected to the corresponding outputs of the preceding switching elements.
The switching network can be arbitrarily extended in either direction, i.e. both relative
at the entrances as compared to the exits. A group of switching elements 40 in which the outputs
of each switching element are connected to the extension inputs of the next switching element
can be combined to form a concerter assembly
44. In the simplest case, the concentrator 30 of FIG. 1 constitutes such a concentrator assembly 44.
Although the principles of the invention have been described above with reference to examples
individuals, it is understood that this description is made only by way of example and does not constitute in any way a limitation of the scope of the invention.
