"Apparatus for simultaneous rotary machining of the bore
and the outside diameter of pipe lengths "" Apparatus for simultaneous rotary machining of the bore and the outside diameter of pipe lengths "
The present invention relates to an apparatus for the simultaneous rotary machining of the bore and the outside diameter of lengths or elements of tube.
The previously known methods for manufacturing these lengths or elements of tube include machining independent of the bore and the outside diameter of the tube. This means that the wall thickness and the concentricity of the tube are not guaranteed, the bore and the outside diameter must then be connected
to the wall thickness in order to control the dimensions of the tube - this turns out to be a very time consuming operation. The present invention allows simultaneous machining of the bore and the outside diameter of the tube to a predetermined dimension with an accuracy of 0.02 mm. This eliminates the need to check the dimensions of the tube, and reduces the actual machining time by around 5 to 7 times.
According to the present invention, an apparatus is provided for the simultaneous rotary machining of the bore.
and of the outside diameter of lengths or elements of tube, which comprises at least two cutting edges mounted on the apparatus and aligned one opposite the other with an adjustable spacing between them, as well as a means for adjusting the width of this spacing.
The cutting edges are preferably aligned directly opposite one another.
The means for varying the spacing between the cutting edges may advantageously comprise one or more spacers of variable thickness, or one or more adjustable screws, which keep the cutting edges separate.
The cutting edges are preferably mounted on one end of the apparatus on opposite sides of the inlet to a groove, which is adapted to receive one end of a length of tube to be machined.
Advantageously, an auxiliary cutting edge is mounted on the device, this auxiliary cutting edge being usable as a separation tool.
Other details and particularities of the invention will emerge from the description below, given by way of nonlimiting example and with reference to the appended drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a plan view of the machining tool in operation, showing a length of tube in cross section with partial breakage. Figure 2 is an elevation and end view of the tool of Figure 1, taken along lines A-A of Figure 1.
The machining tool comprises two cutting edges 1 and 2 mounted on two arms 3 and 4, the cutting edges being aligned directly opposite one another with an adjustable spacing 5 between them. A third cutting edge 6 mounted on the arm 4 can serve as a separation tool. The cutting edges are formed of guide pieces of tungsten carbide, which can be guided in the three positions and held in position by clamping screws 6a, and which are known per se. The adjustable spacing 5 serves as an opening for a groove 7 located between the arms 3 and 4. The dimension of the spacing or space 5 is adjustable by the introduction of a hardened spacer
8 chosen from a series of such parts, of variable thickness, between the two arms 3 and 4. The spacer is interposed between the arms 3 and 4 and held in position by a guide rod 9 and two bolts 10 and 11. The movement of the guide rod
9 is prevented by a positioning pin 12. The bolts 10 and 11 can be tightened by means of respective knurled heads 13 and 14.
In use, the width of the gap 5 between the cutting edges is determined by the thickness of the hardened spacer 8 chosen to be introduced between the arms 3 and 4 of the machining tool. A work piece 15 is mounted on a lathe and centered on a mandrel (not shown) and is rotated between the cutting edges 1 and 2, which cut one end of the work piece with the bore and the outside diameter required. The end of the workpiece thus crosses the gap 5
and is brought into the groove 7, the maximum length of the workpiece machined being determined by the depth of the groove 7. The workpiece of the groove 7 is then removed from the machining tool and the l separation tool 6 to separate the length of machined tube from the workpiece. The machining tool can be used, for example, to produce rings for retaining sealing rings in PVC tube coupling elements, for example rings of the type sold under the trade names "Manchet "and" Click ". The groove of the machining tool
is deep enough to allow the machining of a certain number of these rings, for example four, in
a single operation, each of them then being separated by the separation tool 6 during a subsequent operation.
The machining tool can advantageously be used on a standard tool holder on any
which lathe large enough to turn the maximum diameter of the standard PVC tube.
The applications of this machining tool are wide since it can be adapted to produce a series of rings, clamping sleeves, special springs, spacers and guides from a tubular metal base product or in one plastic material.
It should be understood that the present invention is in no way limited to the above embodiments and that many modifications can
be made without departing from the scope of this patent.
