<EMI ID=1.1>
<EMI ID=2.1>

<EMI ID=5.1>
<EMI ID=7.1>
<EMI ID=8.1>
<EMI ID=9.1>
<EMI ID=11.1>
<EMI ID=12.1>
<EMI ID=14.1>
<EMI ID=15.1>
<EMI ID=16.1>
<EMI ID=17.1>
<EMI ID=18.1>
On obtient donc pour la longueur totale :
<EMI ID=19.1>
<EMI ID=20.1>
ment normal.
<EMI ID=21.1>
<EMI ID=22.1>
<EMI ID=23.1>
<EMI ID=24.1>
spire
L = 1 + y
REVENDICATIONS
The present invention relates to modifications and improvements to the device for memorizing the instantaneous position of a magnetic tape contained in a cassette
of the kind as described in the Belgian patent
Applicant no.871.596 of 27 October 1978.
These improvements relate more particularly to the memory element contained in the cassette and to the information relating thereto.
They aim to ensure automatic processing of said information so as to limit
maximum user intervention. This
allows in particular the processing of a greater number of information and reduces the risk of errors due
improper handling of commands, entry of erroneous data, etc. On the other hand, this automation ensures much simpler use
of the recording device which can then be
made available to the general public.
<EMI ID = 1.1>
The memory element contained in the cassette makes it possible to memorize:
- the position of the magnetic strip relative to each of its ends
(example. position in relation to each side in the case of reversible cassettes)
- for each recording made on the tape:
<EMI ID = 2.1>
x a title (alphanumeric character)
x its position on the magnetic strip (start
and possibly end of registration)
- the type and characteristics of the cassette and the tape stored (for example: brand, total capacity, ...)
- the position of the magnetic tape corresponding to the end of the last recording made (on each side in the case of a reversible cassette)
- a title and classification number for each cassette, possibly name of the performer.
Its internal organization (for a reversible cassette) is detailed in Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings:

2. Operation (figure 2):
Figure 2 attached shows Figure 12 of the second improvement patent No 879.620 filed October 25, 1979 with some modifications which will emerge from the following:
When the cassette provided with its memory is inserted into the apparatus equipped with the means allowing the operation of said memory, the microprocessor 60 automatically reads the information.
<EMI ID = 5.1>
on the television screen (fig. 3).
We get for example:
- the title of the cassette: SPORTS
- its classification number: 4
- the operative side of the cassette: 1
- the instantaneous position of the strip relative to this face: 285
- the recordings made:
x on side 1 - recording: 1 - title:
FOOTBALL - start: 0000
- recording: 2 - title:
HOCKEY - start: 1235
- recording: 3 - title:
JUMPING - start: 2175 <EMI ID = 6.1>
- the position of the tape from which a recording can be made (side 1: 3349).
This is generally the position of the tape corresponding to the end of the last recording made
- the possibilities offered to the user, namely:
1 - magnetic strip controls (reading,
fast recording, fast forward and backward, search for a position, etc.)
2 - registration and / or modification of titles
recordings made
3 - registration and / or modification of the title of
the cassette, its number, the position of the various recordings.
This information is displayed on the screen as long as the tape scrolling controls are not operated, and can be recalled at any time while scrolling.
<EMI ID = 7.1>
with the keyboard 65 for selecting an address.
In the case of a VCR, this button is used to switch the video signals carried by the tape and the information contained in the memory.
When the record button is pressed, the device automatically stores the instant position of the tape
(start of recording) in the register following that corresponding to the last recording. If we refer to FIG. 3 and if the user wishes to record on side 1 of this cassette a new program following the three recordings already made, the tape is then positioned at 3349 and when the record button is activated, the device insures the following recording in the memory: 1.4. 3349
When the recording ends, the device then automatically records the instantaneous position of the tape from which a new recording can be made, for example:
"FREE 5123".
By pressing the "EDIT" key, the user can then enter, via the alphanumeric keyboard 65, a title for this new recording: for example SKI 80. Then appears on the screen: "1.4. SKI 80 3349"
FREE 5123
If the user no longer wishes to keep a given recording or part of a recording, the position of the strip corresponding to the start of the new recording is memorized (for example 1350 side 1) and inserted into the memory part relating to the side 1. The position of the tape corresponding to the end of the recording is also memorized (for example
2523) and compared with the values stored for the records made previously so as to ensure automatic updating of the memory. Then appears on the screen:
<EMI ID = 8.1>
and reference 1.3. flashes to indicate to the user that it relates to a new record-
<EMI ID = 9.1>
the user can then complete, using the alphanumeric keyboard 65, the updating of the content of the memory.
To view a recording (for example HOCKEY), the user enters using the alphanumeric keyboard 65 the reference of this recording (1.2.) And the microprocessor 60 automatically reads from memory 50 the position of the start of this recording (1235 ). This value is then compared to the instantaneous position of the tape and the latter is driven at high speed to be positioned at the start of the chosen recording.
As indicated in FIG. 1, certain states of the cassette and / or of the device on which it is used are also memorized for information, control and security. For example :
- the operative side is memorized so that the value of the instantaneous position of the strip is correctly processed and memorized
- the state of the device (equipped / not equipped to activate the memory) on which the cassette has been or is used is also memorized for control.
If, for example, the cassette is being resynchronized (because it was previously used on an unequipped device) and either the power supply to the device is interrupted, or the cassette is ejected before the end of the operation, this control state (device not equipped) is not modified since resynchronization has not been completed and therefore, the next time the cassette is used on an equipped device, this state will warn the user of this anomaly <EMI ID = 10.1>
Once this operation has been completed, the control state will be switched.
- overflow, so as to warn the user that the end of the tape has been reached during a recording and that therefore the recording is incomplete; that the maximum capacity of the memory (number of recordings, titles of these recordings, etc ...) has been reached and that consequently if other recordings are still made, they will no longer be able to be assigned a number, title , ...
- memorization of the last function performed or in progress (editing, reconfiguration, etc.).
Another improvement will be described and illustrated below with reference to FIGS. 4, 5A and SB.
In a device like the one described
<EMI ID = 11.1>
for various reasons that the user can at any time know the exact quantity of magnetic tape still available (or already used) on one side or on both sides of a reversible cassette.
We have already proposed in the Belgian patent
No. 855.968 of June 21, 1977 relating to "Method and device for monitoring and controlling the transfer of material from a supply reel to a take-up reel" of the applicant, a device for calculating the position of the magnetic strip.
However, we can consider another very simple and very precise method of locating
the position of the magnetic strip which can be applied very well to a cassette containing a memory.
The aim of this improvement is to propose a method of locating the position of
the magnetic strip which is reliable, precise and simple to make.
This method is essentially characterized in that during the running of the strip, a signal representative of the quantity of strip wound on or unrolled from said reel is delivered for at least one of the reels, in that according to the direction of running of the tape and the operative side of the cassette, we combine said signal with a standard signal representing the total capacity of the magnetic tape to perform the update
of the instantaneous position of the strip with respect to one and / or the other of its ends.
Referring to Figures 4, SA, SB:
Two axes 1-2 drive or are driven by the coils 3-4 of magnetic tape 5 contained in the cassette 6 and are rigidly linked to motors 7-8 ensuring the driving of the coils.
When the strip 5 runs from left to right, the reel 3 is the supply reel, the reel 4 being the receiving reel.
The two axes 1-2 are provided with 9-10 plates which associated with opto-electronic devices
11-12 deliver electronic pulses when the coils 3-4 are rotated (8 pulses per revolution in the example described).
These pulses are transmitted to an electronic circuit 60 (fig. 2 and 3) which in a mode
advantageous realization is a microprocessor working under the orders of a well defined program. These components allow a
high concentration of control circuits and their low price makes them particularly attractive.
In this case, this microprocessor is used to perform the various functions
of the recorder, namely for example:
- checking the operation of the device
- control unit
- programming of recordings (in the case of video devices)
- automatic search for transmitting stations, etc.
When a cassette is inserted into the device, the total capacity of the cassette is introduced either manually (using the keyboard
65) in the microprocessor, either automatically by reading information carried by the cassette
(see French patent application No 77 37210 of the plaintiff of December 9, 1977).
As soon as the magnetic strip is driven and stored on the take-up reel, the pulses delivered by the opto-electronic device associated with it, are counted in
<EMI ID = 12.1>
is performed in a register R2 for the pulses coming from the supply coil. The pulse counts are also a function of the direction of travel of the strip indicated in circuit 60.
(microprocessor), to decide whether the corresponding pulses should be added or subtracted.
Referring to Figures SA and SB, it is assumed that a new cassette has been introduced into the apparatus, that is to say in which the entire strip is stored on the supply reel; the two registers RI and R2 are therefore zero (fig. SA).
The magnetic strip having been driven, the two coils 3-4 are in the configuration shown in Figure SB and the registers R1 and R2 have the value respectively 100 and 50 which represent in this embodiment the number of pulses delivered by each reels during the movement of the strip.
The apparatus is provided with a display device 21-22 making it possible to permanently display the position of the magnetic strip for each of the faces of the cassette.
If it is assumed that the device is designed to display the quantity of the tape stored on the take-up reel (quantity of tape used) ,, 'then the microprocessor will insure the value of the register R1 (100 in the envisaged example) in display 21.
The total capacity of the magnetic tape having been entered automatically (assumed to be 1000 to simplify the calculations), the microprocessor will ensure the registration of the complement to
1000 of the value of register R2 in the display
22 or 950.
If the cassette is removed, these two values can advantageously be stored in the memory circuit of the cassette as described in detail in Belgian patent No 871.596 of the applicant.
If the cassette is now returned to the recording device after being reversed, the value 100 appears on the display
22, while the value 950 appears on the display 21.
To simply perform this calculation and the corresponding display, we make sure that
we always calculate the complement to the total capacity of the value:
- of register R2 to display said complement on the display device 22 <EMI ID = 13.1> inverted before storing these values.
In this way, we were able to make an excessively simple prototype with very few components and / or instructions
(microprocessor program) to obtain very precise and very reliable results.
Rather than displaying a measurement representing the quantity used of the magnetic strip, it is quite possible to display a value representing the remaining quantity of the magnetic strip; in the case shown in FIGS. 4 and SB, the value 21 would then be obtained on the display
900 and on display 22 the value 50.
On the other hand, it may be more interesting to have an indication in duration (hours, minutes, seconds) of the remaining quantity of magnetic tape on each of its faces rather than a number of pulses. Indeed, such an indication is directly usable for anyone handling the device.
If we consider that at each reel turn its external radius increases by the thickness of the strip, which experimentally is strong

of laps completed, calculate the length of the magnetic strip very simply and fairly precisely
(in meters or hours, minutes, seconds) stored on said coil.
<EMI ID = 15.1>
In the first round we have the length of the strip
<EMI ID = 16.1>
<EMI ID = 17.1>
<EMI ID = 18.1>
We therefore obtain for the total length:
<EMI ID = 19.1>
<EMI ID = 20.1>
normal.
Knowing then the characteristics:
strip thickness and hub radius which is generally standard for a cassette system, it is very easy to calculate from the number
of turns "n" (known by the microprocessor from information supplied by the optoelectronic sensor) the length of the strip, expressed in meters or in time, stored on one of the coils.
Knowing the total capacity of the cassette, we can easily deduce the length of tape stored on the other reel. In this
specific case, we need only one detector associated with one of the two coils.
<EMI ID = 21.1>
fication of these calculations to know with certainty the instantaneous position of the magnetic strip, and thus to avoid errors which could be caused by a bad counting of pulses, by an abnormal winding of the strip, etc ..., the sensors are kept on each of the reels, as shown in Figures 2 and 4. Therefore, we will obtain by calculation the amount of tape stored on each reel and as the total length of the tape is known from the very type of the cassette, we can check the calculations made by the microprocessor.
<EMI ID = 22.1>
reels would be different for certain types of cassettes, we can provide that the cassette, in addition to carrying an indication of the total capacity
(French patent application No 77 37210 of the applicant), also carries indications relating to different characteristics (thickness of the strip, size of the hubs of the coils, etc.). Provision may also be made, if these characteristics are standardized for a cassette system, to store them in the microprocessor and for the latter to select them automatically when it has detected the type of cassette introduced into the device.
For example, for a cassette of
2 hours, the microprocessor extracts from its memory the thickness of the strip (example: 20 microns), the radius of the hubs of the coils (example: 15 mm), etc.
The above formula being valid for whole numbers of turns, one can very easily envisage a correction for fractions of number of turns. Indeed, for a number (x + 1) of turns we have
<EMI ID = 23.1>
<EMI ID = 24.1>
turn
e = strip thickness
P = number of pulses delivered per coil revolution p = number of pulses delivered by the coil
associated with the detector, and
L = 1 + y
