<EMI ID=2.1>
<EMI ID=3.1>
tie.
"Method for stabilizing wastewater" 1
The present invention relates to a new industrial process for stabilizing concentrated wastewater. As is known, concentrated waste water, in other words waste water with a high content of inorganic components after a possible peliminary mechanical purification, can be stabilized by means of an anaerobic fermentation process, the so-called methane fermentation, in which, in addition to the stabilization of the waste water, also a valuable product, namely methane. This process also offers the important advantage that, during fermentation, the growth
of the microbial biomass is particularly small and that the digestion sludge can be dewatered fairly well. Thus, it is clear that this fermentation process greatly contributes to solving the problems associated with sludge removal in wastewater treatment. In addition, the energy consumption of the aforementioned anaerobic digestion is very low, in contrast to the aerobic purification processes, where the energy consumption, as is known, is always very important.
Until now, the classical anaerobic methane fermentation was regarded as a process that theoretically consists mainly of two different phases, which in practice are carried out simultaneously in one step. According to classical theory, in the first phase the complex of organic substances in the concentrated wastewater is slowly dissolved under the influence of a collection of fermentative bacteria and subsequently converted into a mixture of volatile fatty acids. The
second phase of said process is characterized by the fact that the thus synthesized fatty acids are readily converted by methane bakeries into methane and carbon dioxide.
It has been established that almost 70% of the in
the methane formed in the second phase results from the acetic acid obtained in the first phase. It is also known that the above-mentioned methane bakeries grow slowly and that they are inhibited with too much acid formation in the first phase, that is when the pH falls below 6.0. From the above it was concluded that the first phase of the methane fermentation process, namely the phase in which the organic compounds are solubilized and subsequently converted into volatile fatty acids, more specifically into acetic acid, is the most important step of the overall process, as this phase determines efficiency. The second phase, namely the formation of methane gas and carbon dioxide from acetic acid, is promoted by long sludge residence times, causing the methane bakeries to grow faster than they are removed.
In this phase, it is known that it should be avoided that the pH of the reaction medium should fall below 6.0, since the methane bakeries accretion would then be too strongly inhibited.
As mentioned, the classical two-phase methane fermentation described above is carried out in practice in one stage,
this means that the entire process takes place in the same reactor. In practice, four different types of methane reactors are in use:
1. The low and high load fermentation tanks with periodic discharge of mixed liquid and subsequent supply of new waste water. The load varies from 0.5 to 5.0 kg of volatilizable organic components per m3 <3> per day.
2. The contact reactors, in which the discharged mixed liquid is separated and the sludge is returned to circulation. In this case, the sludge load is also a maximum of 5.0 kg volatilizable organic components per m '
per day.
3. The anaerobic filter, whereby the waste mass is sent through a filter on which anaerobic bacteria are located. Here the maximum volume load is 7.0 kg of volatilizable organic components per m per day.
4. The anaerobic up-flow reactor, in which the waste water is fed upwards through a bed of anaerobic sludge and subsequently separated by means of a special technique.
in purified wastewater, gas and sludge, which returns the sludge
the reactor sinks. The maximum volume load is 15.0 kg of volatilizable organic components per m per day.

However, it has the great disadvantage of being used up to now that it is extremely difficult to monitor and control.
<EMI ID = 2.1>
findings and the reactor was controlled by pH readings and the amount of methane produced. These problems are largely due to a lack of theoretical knowledge of the reaction mechanism of the fermentation process, and to the fact that the said process has hitherto been carried out entirely in a single reactor.
The object of the present invention is to overcome the above-mentioned disadvantages of the classical methane fermentation by proposing a method which is based on an exact theoretical approach to the methane fermentation process.
In order to better understand the essence of the invention, the theoretical foundations on which the method of the invention is based will be discussed in more detail below.
After a thorough theoretical study and extensive experimental work, it was found that the methane fermentation should in fact be regarded as a three-phase reaction which, in practice, should proceed in two stages, in contrast to the classical views where, as already stated, ,
<EMI ID = 3.1>
tie.
The process of the invention comprises a multistage reaction and distinguishes three individually different stages in the fermentation process. In the first phase, as in the classical method, the complex of organic substances in the waste water is converted into volatile fatty acids under the influence of fermentative bacteria. In the context of this invention it is important to note that said fermentative bacteria are relatively fast growing and that the products formed in this phase are either predominantly acetic acid or higher fatty acids such as propionic acid and butyric acid. The latter higher fatty acids will be referred to as "electron sink compounds" in the following.
It has been found that the final result of the fermentation process is strongly influenced by the partial pressure of the hydrogen gas in the reactor.
In the second stage of fermentation, said electron
sink compounds are converted into acetic acid and hydrogen gas under the influence of the so-called obligate hydrogen-producing acetogenic bacteria.
These bacteria are so slow growing that their growth rate is the speed determining step of the total fermentation process. It was found that the growth rate of the latter bacteria is inversely related to the concentration of hydrogen gas in the reactor.
In the third and last theoretical phase of the fermentation process, the hydrogen gas is oxidized to methane gas under the influence of the so-called methane bakeries and is also
partially converted the acetic acid formed in the first phase into methane gas. It should be noted here that the methane bakeries grow slowly and their growth rate is directly proportional to
the concentration of hydrogen gas in the reactor.
In accordance with the theory outlined above, the process of the invention is practiced in two different stages.
In a first stage of the process, the organic material is thus dissolved in the waste water concentrate and converted for the most part into "electron sink compounds". Also, in this step, a judicious choice of the reaction conditions prevents the reaction from taking place spontaneously according to the second and third phases. In accordance with the invention this can be done by a critical choice of the pH of the reaction medium, the sludge residence time, the partial pressure of the hydrogen gas or by a combination of these parameters.
In the second step of the method according to the invention, the solution of said "electron sink compounds" is passed through an expanded bed of sludge. This sludge contains
the bacteria which intervene in the second and third theoretical stages of the methane fermentation process, namely the obligate hydrogen-producing acetogenic bacteria and the methane bakeries, respectively. The growth rate of these bacteria is promoted by ensuring that the hydrogen gas concentration is sufficiently low for the growth of the obligate hydrogen-producing acetogenic bacteria and at the same time sufficiently high for the growth of the methane bakeries. The optimal choice of the latter parameter is determined on the basis of the concentration of electron sink compounds in the reaction medium. In addition, according to the invention, this step of the process can be promoted by the use of special catalysts such as activated carbon, metal compounds, etc.
These catalysts have a high absorption capacity, whether or not specific for hydrogen, making them growth nuclei
may be for the obligate hydrogen producing acetogenic bacteria and the methane bakeries.
It goes without saying that the boundary conditions for the growth of the bacteria, namely the pH value, the hydrogen gas concentration and the cell residence time, must also be checked in this step of the process.
The method according to the invention can, such as
in the classical methane fermentation process
at temperatures between 15 and 55 [deg.] C.
The method according to the invention requires the use of a device which mainly consists of at least two main elements. The first element, the so-called acidification reactor, consists of a container that is closed airtightly and which is provided with means for adjusting the gas overpressure and the pH. The volume load of the acidifying reactor is a maximum of 75 kg volatilizable organic components per m per day. The flue gases containing hydrogen can be averted via an odor separator or diverted via the second element.
This second element, the so-called methane reactor, consists of a container which is constructed in such a way that the liquid originating from the acidification reactor can rise through an expanded sludge bed without the said sludge bed being rinsed out. In addition, this methane reactor is provided with a separating element that admits the gas-water-sludge mixture
and the sludge under the influence of gravity
return to the sludge bed. The maximum volume load of the methane reactor is 25 kg volatilizable organic components per m3 <3> per day.
Between said two main elements, namely the acidification reactor and the methane reactor, the necessary intermediate equipment is moreover provided to condition the liquid at the transition from the first to the second stage with regard to pH,
the temperature, the nutrient concentration and the content of suspended "settable and flottable" components.
